2015-2016 University of Miami (Miller) Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Based on second-hand knowledge, Miami facilitates research but there do not seem to be structured programs. Tons of opportunities at surrounding hospitals and the labs on campus though.

I was a very research heavy applicant and asked several students about research opportunities on my interview day. I was told that the majority of students do some type of research and that PI's are extremely receptive to working with med students. They all emphasized how easy and convenient it was to contact and meet with research faculty with all of the specialty centers and hospitals being right next to each other.

It's my understanding that most students find research opportunities on their own (usually related to specialties they are interested in), but some people also get involved in projects through the optional pathways of emphasis programs (Genetics/Genomics, Immunologic Medicine/Infectious Diseases, Molecular Medicine, etc.) There is also a separate new Life Sciences and Technology Park that has other basic science research opportunities.

Unfortunately I don't really know any more specifics, but I will say that my overall impression was that medical students pursuing research interests was equally or more commonplace at Miami in comparison to other schools I interviewed at.

Excellent. Thank you!

So for the application photo, they didn't specify a square passport-style photo like some other schools did; should I use the shoulders-up photo I've been using for other schools, or do you think they'd prefer a normal looking picture?

What do we do in the MCAT section if we plan on retaking the exam?

Lololol calm down, it'll come in due time. You'll need to have more patience than that if you want to survive this looonnnggg year of applying. Also, I'm so glad you're applying to my school!

Hello Ace.

Miami has one of the longest secondaries in the world with 500 word cap on each question.

Did you try to hit at least a minimum length on these?

I wrote until I had nothing left to say. Usually worked out to be within the word limit. If not, I just trimmed. Also, Duke's secondary is way longer and requires you to write more eloquently, I've heard.

Can anyone advise me on the "most important clinical experience" essay? Do you all think it has to be an experience like shadowing or hospital volunteering, or can it be more personal (assisting family member with serious illness, for example)? I'm guessing it does have to be more like hospital volunteering but thought I would ask anyway.

anyone else not want to not answer any of the optional questions?

For those of you worrying about the optional questions, I didn't answer any of them and was accepted fairly early in the cycle. If they're not applicable, don't feel compelled to answer them, it won't hurt your admissions chances if you don't.

Totally agree. Won't hurt your chances, so don't freak out if you can't answer all of them 🙂. But if you have something good to say and say it well, it can definitely help your chances.

did miami receive anyones photo yet? Just waiting on that to be complete haha

Is anyone else having trouble opening their application?

I realized I forgot to add in a brief description of my activities in the secondary before I submitted it 🙁. I prewrote this secondary so I turned it around pretty fast, but didn't read the email attachment! Am I done for? The activities are all in my primary WITH a description!

Can ask your stats, to see if I'm in the same league to be brave enough not to talk about all the stuff already in my ECs?? I may answer only 2 of the optionals at this point, as I'm not a sport fan by any stretch of the imagination (not even for the 'Canes).

3.8/34 but I don't think stats are relevant to the point I was trying to make. You should definitely include any experiences/EC's that add value to your application where appropriate, but don't feel compelled to try and come up with something out of nothing if you don't have anything relevant to the optional questions. Personally, I didn't have anything that I hadn't already included in one of the other essays that I thought would improve my application, so I decided not to answer them.

For questions asking about things like a summary of our research, is it frowned upon to copy from our primary?

Yes, of you don't have anything additional don't do it. Only if you are working on manuscript, or if you have an update, I think it goes here. Copy and paste is a no no, except for a few schools that have you regurgitate your activity timeline.

quick question. is the payment for secondary done after submitting the secondary? how much does it cost?

Yikes, forgot to do that too 🙁

IS, just submitted secondary! Anyone get confirmation about their picture yet?

$90. It'll take you to a website where you pay after you hit submit.

I only ask because I am leery of taking any advice from the rock stars with the 38+ MCAT scores. They could leave a lot blank, and still get an interview. Those of us who are mere mortals with less than 35 MCATs need to be a bit more cautious with our favorite schools. Cheers, RZ

Is the app working for anyone else? When I try to log in...it just keeps loading..

That is stupid...I just finished their essays too..

I think you have to send them a picture first via email because that's the first step on their instructions that they emailed you. I just sent my picture yesterday and I'm waiting to get access to the application.

Yikes, forgot to do that too 🙁

Yeah me too...you would think that they would write it in the application itself instead of buried in the pdf...also all the descriptions are in the primary app too

+1 to forgetting the description. whatever miami

FYI I have access now...

Has anyone else not received the secondary after getting the email that they were reviewing the AMCAS app?

Yes but I was only verified yesterday and got that e mail this morning.

"Briefly describe the one clinical experience you have had that has most significantly influenced your decision to study medicine. Do not replicate your AMCAS personal statement."

I am having trouble with this question as I don't have ONE clinical experience that most significantly influenced my decision medicine, but many that have cumulatively led me along the path to study medicine (okay maybe wiping butts as a CNA and then watching the doctor tell nurses what medication to give people as he sat comfortably in his large chair).

That said... SDN people, would an experience where I was hospitalized count as a clinical experience? I actually did think it was cool seeing how doctors figured out what was killing me and then prescribe medication which prevented me from dying. That experience did make me want to become a doctor more than ever as in that incident modern medicine kept me from dying which increased my desire for wanting to help extend the lives of other people.

just submitted my secondary and it says photo is missing...im assuming they'll update this. i sent it to the email in the pdf.

Yup make sure to write descriptions for you shadowing and volunteering and stuff

for all the optional essays are you guys thinking of just putting things down from descriptions in your AMCAS? or are they expecting us to write about different things than what our AMCAS states considering I put down most of my hobbies, student org involvement, etc

I am also wondering about this. I put down all my hobbies and student organizations with great descriptions on my primary. I don't think I can elaborate much more on those, and I also don't want to repeat myself.

Any thoughts on the format of the chronological lists of clinical experience/shadowing and community service/volunteering? Are bullet points OK or should I go ahead and write complete sentences with descriptions of the activity?

for the questions about pleading guilty to a criminal charge or crime, does that include speeding tickets?
