2015-2016 University of Miami (Miller) Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Edited hahaha I got a little excited....just the email that they've received my primary.

I did get another secondary though, so it actually is finally starting!

UMMSM Alum here. Feel free to ask me questions.

Please just give me the secondary! Every time I get an email alert I'm like

I haven't received a single secondary or email notification for that matter! I'm freaking out! Every time I get an email and it's not a secondary I die a little inside...

Got secondary email way too early this morning. Let the fun begin.

I'm also freaking out. Got an early morning application received notification from this place and then NOTHING from anywhere else, including places where other folks have gotten secondaries (can see on other forums). Time to breathe ....

Just received an almost secondary this morning. Checked my email when I woke up and had a "kinda yaaaay" reaction.
Yes, now that I'm awake, (sorry, worked all night, didn't read the details that the secondary WAS COMING). Did get a couple of secondary links for other schools though. Lot's of email flurry, need to weed out the relevant stuff from the yeah, we know you exist, to let me do something.

about the first question from last year's secondary: "Briefly describe the one clinical experience you have had that has most significantly influenced your decision to study medicine. Do not replicate your AMCAS personal statement."

My PS was about a specific clinical experience shadowing with Hospice and how it significantly influenced my decision to study medicine. Should I try to tackle this question with my Hospice experiences from a different angle? What I'm really asking is whether or not using the same specific topic will be considered replicating my AMCAS personal statement, or if they are just trying to make sure no one copies and pastes verbatim.

Lololol calm down, it'll come in due time. You'll need to have more patience than that if you want to survive this looonnnggg year of applying. Also, I'm so glad you're applying to my school!

Because you're one of my favorite SDN posters? All of your posts that I've seen so far are #realtalk and #commensense, which I appreciate.

You can tackle from a different angle. If that truly is the one decision that influenced you the most then go with it

Does UM send out secondaries to applicants without an MCAT score? I took my test June 20th.

for all the optional essays are you guys thinking of just putting things down from descriptions in your AMCAS? or are they expecting us to write about different things than what our AMCAS states considering I put down most of my hobbies, student org involvement, etc

Could anyone point me to info about research opportunities offered to med students? Does UM offer structured programs for research throughout med school or during the summer between M1 and M2? Or are med students on their own to find research opportunities?

I ask not because I'm too lazy to look for info; Rather, I'm having a really tough time finding any

Thanks!

Based on second-hand knowledge, Miami facilitates research but there do not seem to be structured programs. Tons of opportunities at surrounding hospitals and the labs on campus though.

I was a very research heavy applicant and asked several students about research opportunities on my interview day. I was told that the majority of students do some type of research and that PI's are extremely receptive to working with med students. They all emphasized how easy and convenient it was to contact and meet with research faculty with all of the specialty centers and hospitals being right next to each other.

It's my understanding that most students find research opportunities on their own (usually related to specialties they are interested in), but some people also get involved in projects through the optional pathways of emphasis programs (Genetics/Genomics, Immunologic Medicine/Infectious Diseases, Molecular Medicine, etc.) There is also a separate new Life Sciences and Technology Park that has other basic science research opportunities.

Unfortunately I don't really know any more specifics, but I will say that my overall impression was that medical students pursuing research interests was equally or more commonplace at Miami in comparison to other schools I interviewed at.

For everyone who has received the secondary: I was reading through the MSAR today (excellent tool by the way, I just got it today and it is well worth the money!) and found that Miami will now be requiring Biochem WITH A LAB. Did you find anything about this on the secondary? I have taken Biochem lecture but never a lab... @bumblebee611 ? Anyone else?

That isn't what I see in the MSAR online. MSAR online just says biochem, 4 units, no lab. But is one or the other of what we are looking at not fully up to date? For the record, though, I have not received a secondary from U of Miami.

Oh my apologies, I thought you'd received one! I misread your post, I was quickly scrolling through to see who looked like they'd gotten one.

So I see what you're talking about with the 4 hour requirement (with no lab) on the summary page with the check marks. This is what initially confused me, because I saw this but then I read something on the "Selection Factors" page. Under the "Required/recommended courses" section it says that instead of two semesters of O-Chem with lab being required, only one semester of O chem with lab and one semester of Biochem with Lab will be required.

Recommended, not required.

It's on this friggin page: http://admissions.med.miami.edu/md-programs/general-md/prerequisites

I was told biochem was required, no lab.

may be a dumb question, but how do I apply to both the MD and MD/MPH programs? On AMCAS it seems I'm only able to apply to one or the other

You make that selection on the secondary.

Anyone get the actual secondary yet? Got the "almost secondary" July 1

All quiet on the western front (get it? cause I'm from Washington State? ha... ha... ha... :| )

@Ginred -- no secondary app yet. However, I'm a biochem major, so I better hope I took a biochem course in undergrad 😛

And all is quiet on the midwestern front. These are the times that try mens' souls.

On their website they say they want 3 letters of recommendation, but they don't give a maximum. On the MSAR they have a maximum of 5. What do they prefer?

Do they screen? It says 'you were selected'

MSAR says it's sent to all US citizens and residents, where did you see they screen @tensticks

Well I remember that they sent me an email July 1st saying that they will decide whether to send me a secondary "shortly" and I got the secondary today. Makes me thing that they screen, but hey maybe I'm wrong if MSAR does say that.
