2015-2016 University of Miami (Miller) Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
worth adding this one as a last minute addition? also concerned since they interview so few oos/oos applicants
Isn't UM Miller relatively OOS friendly? It's a private school. If you don't mind the essay lengths, I say go for it.

Anyone willing to take a quick look at my Please discuss a situation where you had to use your leadership skills essay?

msar says around 200 interviewed for 5500 applicants, and 113 matriculants. I always heard that miami is friendly to OOS but those stats make it seem like it's really hard to get to interview stage, but really easy to get in once you've been invited

As a private school, UM doesn't have an institutional bias the way the other Florida schools do. They do tend to take more Florida students though, and I think that is because they they have a commitment to Miami/Florida and want to take people from the community that will be likely to stay in the state for residency. They have some of the best professional connections in the state and don't want to lose a foothold because their graduates are heading back to their home states after graduation. Also if you look at their class profile, nearly 1/3 (41 of 150) of their students went to UM for undergrad, which definitely throws the numbers a bit.

Those numbers aren't accurate. I thought the same thing when I saw that while applying last cycle. I don't remember the exact number but they told us on interview day thay they interview somewhere around 600 applicants.

Also, the class is usually pretty close to half and half IS/OOS.

Application has been complete but still haven't received my photo! Should I send another email with my photo in it? I sent one to [email protected] and the other email as well.

Yeah, those numbers definitely aren't accurate.

It's 150 matriculating students for the MD program, 48 for the MD/MPH.

Like @BioEngMD said, they interviewed 600-something out of well over 10,000 applications this past cycle. Also: More than 2,500 of those applications were received on the very first day of the cycle. So submitting early is really important.

Just curious - are you referring to the AMCAS primary or the supplemental also? @Flintwire
That's a very good question. They didn't specify, but I assumed they meant the primary. They said they "logged in to the portal and downloaded 2,500 applications on the very first day."

They also implied that was way more than they were used to receiving on the first day.

How many of you filled out the optional sections? I feel like I already talked about most of them in the activities list ...

I'm trying to fill out as many as I can by adding more specifics, but I think I'm gonna end up leaving a couple blank.

I'm kinda stuck on the "most meaningful involvement in student organizations" one. I have a very clear answer as to which student org was most meaningful to me, but I feel like I have nothing else to say that I haven't covered in other essays (leadership, community service, and "why Miami" (mentioned briefly)) not to mention the 3 entries I used in my primary. Does anyone have any advice on what to do? Do you think they'll be able to tell that this is my most meaningful student org, or do I need to explicitly say something in this box as well?

I only did 3 optional essays, and 1 of them was only 3 sentences long. Just add stuff if you have something more to say, don't repeat yourself.

I'm already put my most significant clinical experience in my amcas and it says do not replicate from amcas so should I not write about what I already said was my most significant clinical experience or should I rephrase it with more detail in my secondary???

I think the latter - don't give the same exact info.

Do they acknowledge your emailed photo if you haven't submitted a secondary? Emailed my photo in about a week ago

LOL sorry about my last post. i was extremely tired lol
what do you guys like so much about this school?

STATUS CHANGE!!!!

"Your Application has been reviewed by the Admissions Committee at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. Applicants will be invited to interview based upon their point total from the Committee review. Applications that have been reviewed and scored by the Committee will be considered for interviews during the entire interview cycle (September - April)."

Does anyone know if we can see our points anywhere/what the interview cutoff is? Has anyone else received this status - or an II/rejection??

This is the default status change everyone gets once they have been completely evaluated by the committee pre-interview. And no, there is no way to determine how many points you have or what the interview cutoff is.

So people with this status have gotten rejections?

If you're asking in regards to the why Miami essay, it'd be best to go and do your time and research and make your own informed decision 🙂

Everyone is different so every reason will be different

Where ya from!?!?! I grew up in Spokane, but I work in Pullman (bleh). My sister lives in the Issaquah area right outside of Seattle/Bellevue.

Didn't grow up here but spent the past decade or so in the Bellevue area 🙂 so excited to be done with this stuff soon and actually go outside while there's still sunshine

I can't find much information to use for the "Why Miller" essay on their website. There's nothing about opportunities for med students that I can see. How did you guys write a 500 word essay about this? (I've never been to Florida)

I found tons on their website! You have to look though, it's not given to you on a platter that's for sure

Yes, they said it's two separate days with the MD interview on day 1 (Miami Dade Campus) and MD/MPH on day 2 (Palm Beach Campus). No complaints from this Ohio girl about enjoying the Miami weather for an extra day 😎

Do you think the early II is because you applied to both MD and MD/MPH?

Congrats & Good luck!!! @Kfranko889 I was complete a few days before you so I hope I hear something soon...also from Ohio... also would love to leave this constant RAIN 🙂

Agreed! I know exactly what you mean.

But speaking of weather, I know this week is supposed to be HOT!

And congrats on the interviews whomever received them. I was just quickly browsing through.

Working on my secondary here and I feel like it will be a LONG night!!! Yet worth it for such an awesome school in an even more awesome location =D
