2015-2016 University of Miami (Miller) Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
This may sound silly, but for the "description of the most significant clinical experience", could I discuss my research over the past year and half as a whole? Or should I pick one specific experience within my research (e.g. particular advanced cancer patient)? I already did the latter in my PS, so I am looking for some suggestions...thanks!

Welp-

I completely overhauled my entire application and rewrote all of my essays from last year. I read through each of them at least a dozen times. It took a lot of effort, and it meant that submission came a few days later, but I think the final result is pretty impressive. I hope Miami feels the same way!

Good luck! I hope you find success this time around!

Thanks Ace! How is school going!? And where did you end up deciding to live?
School is faster pace than undergrad, but it's not overwhelming if you keep up with the material on a daily basis. I live in Brickell.

sent in secondary + photo yesterday, LOR not received ( tho some schools hav them), and photo no received. However under MD program "Your Application is currently under review by the Admissions Committee at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine."

am I complete or nah?

I cannot wait to submit this secondary, so many days of rewriting and proofreading...

Can any current MD/MPH students comment on how they manage their weekly workload, and whether they have additional time to focus on research projects that interest them? I have gone through the curriculum structure and course descriptions, but I wanted to read some first-hand comments from students (apart from those from that link posted earlier). The more I read about the program the more it interests me, but I'm concerned about how much work it takes to balance it all.

Thanks!

As of today my app has "been reviewed" for both MD and MD/MPH. I'm guessing it can be weeks until I hear back? Anyone have experience with this? Btw I was complete sometime within the first week of August

Been verified for a week, still no secondary.. How long did it take you guys to get the secondary?

Does anyone know how long it takes the photo to get added to your application, and if they'll send an email when complete? I sent my photo in 3/4 days ago and they have everything else. Under MD program it says: "Your Application is currently under review by the Admissions Committee at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine."

About a week for mine, I think.

Thanks! Did they send you an email when you were complete?

how long have the MD only applicants had their status as complete and under review? mine's hasn't changed for almost a month..

how detailed of descriptions did everyone give to the list service/clinical experiences portion?

Not much, as it is already in the EC of the AMCAS submission. I only did a couple of sentences for each.

I emailed their admissions director, he said the way I did it was "correct". I think they are flexible with the answers to this prompt. All I did was provide title of position / date range / total hours when necessary / location.

No, not really. Direct quote from the secondary: "Please provide a chronological list with dates of your clinical experiences/shadowing.".
I think in the email they sent the instructions state to add a brief description. It sounds like they accept both ways, though.

I just ahve a quick question about the part that asks for actions. Do you what they eman by any other academic institution? does it include middle school?

So my photograph was received on Monday and my letters were received on Tuesday, which is when my application was marked complete on the portal and I see nice check marks next to everything. I'm an MSTP applicant though, and I'm still seeing this message on the portal:

MD-PhD Program
The MD/PhD Program Office is currently reviewing your application. However, your application is not yet completed. Please be sure to complete and submit your secondary application, letters of recommendations and a photo. You must complete the application process before we can consider you for an interiew. If you have any questions please contact the MD/PhD Program Office by email at [email protected] or phone 305-243-6278.

Should I email/call and see what's up? Or does it take a few days for this message to change?

Did they Email you when your photograph was received?

Does anyone know if they're strict about the 2 quarters of biochem requirement? My school only offered a quarter-long course...

Yeah this is happening to me too. I sent in the photo awhile back and got the email that they received it, but its not coming up on my login. BUT its saying my application is under review so I guess the system is glitchy?

I was under review the second I submitted my secondary. I don't think it means much

Yeah it seems like just a computer glitch given everyone else's experience with it. Couldn't hurt to call them and quickly confirm, but I think we're fine.

Hey guys - I answered "no" to some of the questions on the Re-applicant section (i.e. "Are you a re-applicant to Miami" and "Were you interviewed before") but didn't realize that I probably should have just left it blank. Should I contact them about this to clarify that I am indeed not a re-applicant to any med school, or will they most likely already know I'm not?

...did anyone else who got their initial email around July NOT get a secondary yet? Because i haven't...

I think you're okay and can let it be—if you checked "no," it should be clear you're not a re-applicant. Though if you said something in the text box that is confounding, call 'em

My app has been at "has been reviewed" for about a full month now...

Aloha applicants! Current MS2 here, will be checking in every so often to help answer questions as best as I can. Disclaimer: I am NOT a member of the admissions committee. Please address me here in the forum - I likely won't respond to PM's, and other people may benefit from a response to your questions, so let's keep the conversation on the forum! Happy to answer questions about our program, curriculum, student-life, life in Miami, etc. If you've gotten an interview invite already, congratulations! If not, keep the faith that Miller is diligent and thorough and you'll get your shot at an interview.

Pro-tip: no-one gets invited for a "wait list interview". If you're invited, you have as much a shot as being accepted flat out as you do being wait-listed. I think something like 70% of the interviewees got an acceptance to Miller in the cycle I applied, so if you get an interview, the odds are already in your favor.

My stats when I applied in 2013: 30S MCAT (12BS / 10PS / 8VR), and for those who care, I'm a Caucasian male. With that in mind, let's not ask "what are my chances", because on statistics alone, I should not have gotten into medical school. So probabilities and chances and statistics are meaningless to you as an individual applicant.

Best of luck everyone! Go Canes!
