2015-2016 University of Miami (Miller) Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Just checked my status online and it changed to this: "Your Application has been reviewed by the Admissions Committee at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. Applicants will be invited to interview based upon their evaluation score from the Admissions Committee review." But no interview invite, so I guess that's a no for now...

It's not a "no for now". It's just what it says. Mine said that for over a week before the II came in.

Hey guys,

How fast did they respond to your picture sent by email? I sent in mine sometime last week and my application is still marked as incomplete? Should I call in to ask about this?

I sent mine in before I submitted my app, but they replied in 24 hrs to say they received it.

Oops, I realized I had sent it to a different email than the one given in the original email that provided the secondary.....hopefully that doesnt come off as pressing

Just checked my status, and it changed to this as well!!! I dunno when, but it must have been in the last two days or so because I checked it this weekend. Yay!!! I hope to hear some positive news! Good luck!

Hey everyone. The max number of LOR are 5. In the school's webpage says 3, and does not clear tells you if it is the max. However, I called the admissions office and they told me I can upload up to 5 LOR. I just wanted to share since I could not find any "definite" answer anywhere else. Good luck everyone.

Aloha applicants! Current MS2 here, will be checking in every so often to help answer questions as best as I can. Disclaimer: I am NOT a member of the admissions committee. Please address me here in the forum - I likely won't respond to PM's, and other people may benefit from a response to your questions, so let's keep the conversation on the forum! Happy to answer questions about our program, curriculum, student-life, life in Miami, etc. If you've gotten an interview invite already, congratulations! If not, keep the faith that Miller is diligent and thorough and you'll get your shot at an interview.

Pro-tip: no-one gets invited for a "wait list interview". If you're invited, you have as much a shot as being accepted flat out as you do being wait-listed. I think something like 70% of the interviewees got an acceptance to Miller in the cycle I applied, so if you get an interview, the odds are already in your favor.

My stats when I applied in 2013: 30S MCAT (12BS / 10PS / 8VR), and for those who care, I'm a Caucasian male. With that in mind, let's not ask "what are my chances", because on statistics alone, I should not have gotten into medical school. So probabilities and chances and statistics are meaningless to you as an individual applicant.

Best of luck everyone! Go Canes!

I have some concern about Miller, could you share your general expeince so far? There was alot of material posted on the interview feedback that was very negative regarding the cirriculum and the faculty. I wish I had copy pasted it earlier since it appears to have been removed. This was also posted, could you comment on it?

"The students do not seem to be happy. They only seem to be there because they really want to become doctors and were not accepted anywhere else or because it is close to home. The school is very overpriced. The staff, except for the secretary are all gnomes from the Inferno. Hinkley. He manages to distort every piece of statistic on the school to disguise its impending decline. I was very unimpressed with every facet of this institution, even though it is my alma mater. Very disgusted. " -Posted 07/07/2002 | Report Response

EDIT: I am more so interested in the "quality of life" @ UM rather than the other details contained in the second paragraph. Some of the content that may have been removed included: (**paraphrasing here**) The factulty does not set you up for success/spent too much time on geriatric med/ screwed if you don't know spanish ....ect ect.

PS not bagging on the school just doing some homework

i'm not sure how much you should rely on a post from over a decade ago?...i'd be more concerned if someone in the last 3-5 years said something similar.

I agree. I was just using it as some evidence...my main concern, as previously stated, was the negative material that has been removed. If that material was taken down..why?? Was it a disgruntled student or did it reflect actual sentiment which is being censored.

I work with a physician in the ER who graduated from Miami and she said it was amazing. She said the people in her class were extremely close and the clinical experience was incredible. She noted the academics (first 2 years) were of average quality, but she was well prepared for step 1. She otherwise has no bad words about Miami and she said she would do it over again.

I know some students there and they love the school. But I also have some friends who have dealt with the admissions office/secretary and have some pretty negative reviews on their professionalism.

I'm not sure what removed negative feedback you're talking about, and I can only speak from personal experience, but I'll answer as best I can. I've had nothing but positive interactions with students, faculty, and staff over the last application cycle and thus far in the school year. The admissions office was a little slow with responses, but in my experience they were always nice, informative, and professional. I thoroughly enjoyed my interview day and second look, and all of the students were extremely friendly and seemed very happy (this was one of the things that set Miller apart for me). Academically I can only speak to anatomy, but our instructor is an amazing lecturer and it's been a great experience thus far. As @mpsu2014 mentioned, the preclinical curriculum is pretty traditional so nothing too special there, but Miller is well known for providing amazing clinical training and giving their students a great deal of responsibility that leaves them very well prepared for residency (take a look at the past match lists). Personally, I also really liked the inclusion of specialties like radiology and anesthesiology in required clerkships, the wide range of opportunities associated with the multiple hospitals and numerous specialty centers on the medical campus, and was very impressed with the Department of Comminity Service.

In regards to your second paragraph, I don't know of anything that would support any of those conclusions. Miami is very reasonably priced for a private school, and even cheaper if you're a Florida resident. Furthermore, the COA budget allows for a very high standard of living, and you could easily get by on significantly less. Also, over 80% of our class received multiple acceptances, so the claim that people only come here because they don't have any other options is absolutely ridiculous.

What the heck Miami? Why don't you have record of my letters when all my other schools did three weeks ago? I'm still incomplete because Miami is allegedly still waiting on my letters. Anyone else have this experience so far? I'm going to call the admissions office tomorrow morning.

You're telling me. I didn't even receive a secondary, only the initials notice early July

Hey if everyone keeps trying to bag on this school, all the better; less competition for me 😉
Not bagging on Miami, I love this school. I'm just demonstrating anxiety because they don't have my letters marked as received yet and I want to try and get an earlier interview here!

Hi!! For the question " Please provide a chronological list with dates of your employment" did you guys put an actual list? I would have done that but a lot of my jobs overlap so a list doesn't necessarily make the most sense you know? Thanks in advance for the help!!

did anyone have issues with the payment? I'm clicking on proceed to secure checkout but the page that comes up is just blank/doesn't load. Tried multiple browsers

Yep. I did.

After trying multiple browsers and computers, I eventually tried compatibility mode in Internet Explorer and it worked.

Hope it works for you!

II for MD and MD/MPH for me as well. Complete 7/29/15 and noticed my status changed last week to that I had been scored.
@entresuspiros How are you getting to the Palm Beach County campus? Are you renting a car? Or is it available by bus or anything?

Status change today (MD only, complete 7/15):

Your Application has been reviewed by the Admissions Committee at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. Applicants will be invited to interview based upon their point total from the Committee review. Applications that have been reviewed and scored by the Committee will be considered for interviews during the entire interview cycle (September - April).

Does my application still need to be "scored", or does this mean that it has been scored?

@PolarBearMD i haven't thought that far ahead to be honest 🙁 i'll have to scope and see if I need to go back to the airport or whether another stop is closer! Maybe one of those stops could be close to a Miami hotel?...I am clearly very behind on everything hahah, haven't booked anything but a flight! (flying into Miami, flying out of Palm Beach).

No worries! I'll look into it once they get back to me about what day I am interviewing!

This status means that your app has been scored and is now on some kind of queue based on your score. From what it seems, they interview the top scores first and just work their way down until interviews/seats are filled.

Thanks, but I think I remember people posting their statuses that said their application was actually scored as well as reviewed. Can anyone confirm that?

I'm pretty sure mine went from "being reviewed" to "reviewed and scored" (but no score given).

Congrats! When were you complete or under review?
I can't check now but I think I submitted my secondary on 8/13-8/14 and I got a "photo submitted" email on 8/20. I think mine said it had been reviewed and scored.

@PolarBearMD I'm not sure. I have family in Homestead so they might drive me there, or I might use one of their cars. I can't afford too many days off from work so it might be the former, so I can go to the airport afterward.

Wow that's a quick turnaround- mind me asking your stats? Congrats!

I dunno if I skipped a page accidentally because I'm on my phone, but didn't this thread have a picture of a PowerPoint slide with the scoring criteria on it?

I'm pretty average stats-wise - LizzyM 71-73 (new MCAT so dont know for certain), nontrad, URM. I think my LORs and ECs helped a lot, though they're nothing special.

I expect to wait a lot longer for most other schools since I wasn't verified until 8/5 and submitted most of my secondaries in the past few weeks. I still have three to go but I'm so burnt out...

Got the LOR thing rectified- it was an AMCAS error, not Miami's. Now my secondary can be fully submitted and be reviewed!
