2015-2016 University of Miami (Miller) Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Has anybody been accepted MD/MPH? I was a part of the first MD/MPH group that interviewed, and my status hasn't changed yet. I was assured by one of their Admissions people that we would be reviewed the first time the adcom meets.

It looks like everyone who was accepted so far was from the MD pool. My bet is that MD/MPH interviewees will hear back tomorrow.

Well, just called the office to see if they're still making calls.

Got the voicemail. So I guess they're done for the day! I'm not sure if this means they have finished making all the calls and the rest of us are wait-listed, or if this means they're going to continue calling people tomorrow. 😢

Guys. It's only October. If you're not accepted now, it's okay. I didn't get accepted until the middle of May (I interviewed in January). So please don't be glued to your phones and don't stress out too much. Your time will come. I hope all of you who interviewed had a good time at my school. UM is a wonderful med school, and I'm really happy to be here. I hope to meet many of you in the future. Good luck!

I loved it..that's why I'm so nervous! Hahaha...

Some words of advice from someone who went through this before:

Do not assume you know anything about what the school is doing aside from what they actually tell you. Having read some posts here, I have seen a lot of false information that only serves to spread panic and chaos.

Please be patient.

@neuronz , I did some stalking in previous threads, and while it seems like last year a lot of people got accepted via the "final decision reached" status, there were actually some people who had that status that were wait-listed. So..all in all, I guess nothing's predictable. Too bad the previous threads weren't time-stamped though, so there's really no way to know if they made all the calls today already or if they're going to make some tomorrow. I'm tired of worrying about this now at this point though, and hopefully I'll get accepted at some point..

Hey, anybody interviewing on the 19th (main campus) and 20th (regional)? I was thinking renting a car might be cheaper, but wanted to split the costs with at least one other interviewer (although 2 or 3 would probably work). I am 23, so with me renting there would be a bit of a surcharge, so if there is a non trad out there, interviewing similar days, I would love to meet up.

Also, for people in general, it is cheaper to rent right?

Alternate list... 🙁

@Ace Khalifa , did you do anything to get off the alternate list during the time you were waiting? What are the chances of getting off of it if we interviewed this early? 🙁

I'm sorry 🙁 Hopefully we can get accepted at one of the next admissions dates!! Don't lose hope 🙂 How did you find out though, email? I still haven't heard anything...

I was accept off the alternate list in May of my application year. What should you do meanwhile:

1) kick ass I school and send them your semester grades
2) if you complete any projects, let them know
3) RELAX! A large number of the class is accepted off the alternate list.

Good luck.

Ditto, and my status online hasn't changed to decision made yet.

A few more questions before I presumably vanish off this thread for awhile (or just lurk)...

When looking at older threads for UM, it seems like the ones placed on alternate lists early on don't end up getting off of it (or they just sort of..vanish off this thread too). How true is this? Could it just be because they most likely got better offers elsewhere and therefore dropped their spots on the alternate list? The reason why I ask is because it seems strange that most people accepted off the alternate list interviewed in Nov-Feb. It's weird because I thought the process of getting II came from a prelim score, and if yours were higher, you'd get an earlier II. So, wouldn't your base score pre-interview be higher? Assuming most people don't tank their interviews, wouldn't it be easier for the earlier interview people to have overall higher scores once interviews were factored in?

I might be missing something in my thought process though, because I definitely haven't seen anyone on SDN who interviewed sept/oct get in off the alternate (that posted anyway). Most were january-feb interviews, with like a few november ones.

Anyway, I think prolonging my presence on this thread is just going to get me depressed. Will probably check in sporadically during acceptance dates..or not. Bye guys 🙂

Try and not think about it. This process is so long and convoluted that speculation based off past data is useless. The real answer to your questions is "Maybe." I know...not the most satisfying answer...but the most realistic one.

I'm sure you're a strong applicant and will get in somewhere if not UM. Good luck!

I interviewed in September and got off the waiting list. STOP TRYING TO READ INTO THINGS! When you interview can be due to something as simple as when the committee members got to your application. There are something like 4000 applications? CHILLAX!

I assume there is no way to find out where you stand in terms of number of points to determine interview eligibility?

Just follow the advice that @midevilrabbi gave. There's really no need to panic until June. So many of my classmates got off the alternate list at some point. Also, none of that even matters now that we are in the thick of it.

I interviewed 9/25 and did not hear anything about waitlist or acceptance. Do you think I should call the admissions office or just hang tight until the next acceptance date?

You shouldn't expect to hear until after you get the "final decision" status. If you don't have that status your application hasn't been reviewed by the committee post-interview yet. However, that status doesn't give any indication as to acceptance, wait list, or rejection.

Submitted my secondary on 8/6 and haven't heard anything. Says I'm currently being reviewed. Has anyone around my date gotten II's?

hey guys, sorry if this has been asked already - im planning on taking the tri-rail from miami to palm beach on monday. anyone do that already or know how to go about it? can i just buy the ticket at the station or do i have to do it in advance? THANKS! 🙂

You get the ticket at the kiosk at the station. It's pretty straightforward. You get there ~30 min before the train is supposed to arrive, buy the ticket, wait for 1-1.5 hours because the train is late, and be on your merry way.

And leave 5 hours early... (trust me on this one).

Do they accept updates? Not letters of intent, just updates?

@Ace Khalifa

Just interviewed. The environment really is chill just like you said and it also still gives the air that people are truly putting in work. Easily my top choice now. SUNY down has to come hard. U.Miami is amazing; I hope I get the call.
There's a reason why we are all happy here at Miami. I'm glad you liked my school, it is a solid choice for anyone who wants to work hard in med school and get incredible clinical training while also having lots of fun along the way.

Yeah, @Ace Khalifa and the rest of us at UM are pretty awesome 😎. Plus we have Champney for anatomy, which is like a hidden bonus no one talks about during interview day.

Hope you get the call as well @teeayejay !

Hahahahaahahah What? Competed primary early July, have a few ii coming up, and only NOW did Miami decide to give me a secondary app. I thought they ditched my thing a long time ago. Is it even worth filling out at this point?

would you want to attend? if so, then yeah fill it out

Has anybody been rejected from this school pre-interview, post-secondary. I have been complete for the longest time and still there has been no contact.

My app was reviewed at the end of July. Hoping I can get an II here!

Tejas514: you can be rejected pre-interview post secondary. If you have not been rejected, it means you are in the system.

@midevilrabbi if i have been comlete since end of july. is it good that I haven't been notified of anything as of yet or is it a silent rejection?

been complete since july and my status is still "Your Application is currently under review by the Admissions Committee at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine."

anyone in the same situation?
No, I moved to "been scored and interviews are offered Sept through March. yada yada yada. Waiting for an II, if one ever will show up. My brother didn't get an II until Feb 2 cycles ago. They do go much slower with II than other schools.
