Didn't receive the CaneLink email, already scored (submitted secondary mid-July).......but then again my email hasn't been receiving a lot of med school-related emails :I
 
How do you know if you're scored or not? My portal just says my app is under review. Complete since July

Theres a status after yours that says something like "your application has been reviewed and scored"

I'm not 100% on the wording, since I'm also still under review 🙂
 
Just got a cane ID email, is that basically a complete email? Edit: should probably read the 40 posts about this before mine :|

Admissions Committee member here:

CaneLink is a portal for which important financial actions and documentation can be submitted. Being added has no connection to your application status.

Again, with over 8000 applications, it takes a very long time to score all of them. Please be patient.
 
This is weird. It says my application is incomplete. It also says my application date is in November when I submitted my secondary in August. Honestly, it is kind of cool to get a look at what the student portal is like!

Submitted late July, says incomplete on Canelink as well.

Once you are signed in, scroll down and click on the green button that says "Go to student center". Then at the bottom you will see the subheading "Admissions". There will be a chart where you can click "view status" which will show you the application date. The incomplete, for me, was visible under the admission heading before I even clicked view status.
 
To break up the monotony of the CaneLink Madness:

Who is applying to the MD/PhD? Anyone interviewing today?

The new Portal says:
This application is Incomplete.

It is an interesting move to be switching portals in the middle of an application cycle. UGs are gearing up as well. The old portal says:
Application complete and Your Application has been reviewed by the Admissions Committee at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine.
 
I submitted late October
Got the Cane Link email today
Don't really know what this means though
 
Incomplete on both portals. More "patient" waiting. Thanks everyone for clarifying this canelink thing, though.
 
I just got the canelink, but I never got an email saying if I've been scored yet. How do I know if I've been scored already?

You don't get an email about being scored--if you check you status it will say that your app has already been reviewed and that applicants are invited based on their score.

Does the canelink email provide a link to canelink itself? I just got the email and it says I need to update contact info and such but only provides a link to the regular status check...

mine didnt, it just sent me back to the normal portal where it said my application is "currently under review"
 
Yeh.. do I need to actually do anything for the canelink dealio?..

Considering I am on the Admissions Committee, it is true. You can be Waitlisted until the start of school, and people have been accepted on that day. You can also be rejected. No such thing as a silent rejection.

Well you applied to the MD/MPH for a reason, right? It seems if you're having a hard time deciding, you may as well save yourself the extra work and accept the MD-only.

No. They're supposed to give decisions on a certain date. I didn't hear back about anything post interview and had to call them and ask for the letter and given how they treated me it was pretty obvious what they were going to do.

A W/L is a decision.

Full disclosure.... I wasn't accepted here, but I remember thinking about these programs and wondering what you'd be 'giving up' by doing the MPH in the same amount of time. I remember hearing inklings that people that were interested in more competitive things were having trouble getting things together to have a comprehensive application for residency (research etc), but met a 4th year trying to match plastics and he seemed like he had everything in the bag.

It comes down to why you want to do the MPH and whether you're okay with the opportunity cost, because there is always an opportunity cost. I found the folks in the MPH program seemed to be generally pretty great all around, though I didn't interact with the MD only folks too much. If anything, that's a nice consolation since you'll be spending a lot of time with the MD/MPH folks. The 3rd and 4th years I spoke to about the MD/MPH seemed to really like the work they were doing and were very happy with how the administration treated them and their concerns. That was definitely a pretty big plus.

Hi all! I received an invitation to submit the secondary 7/7, but I didn't fill it out because I was feeling swamped... but receiving the CaneLink email reminded me about my application. Do you think I have a chance if I submit my secondary this late in the season? (36/3.9, OOS, avg EC's + 1 paper in a small journal) Or would it be a waste of time & money? Thanks in advance for the insight!

It's not too late. The primary application deadline is December 1st. As long as you get your application in before then you have a shot.

That being said ... it's a long shot. Applying this late puts you at a SIGNIFICANT disadvantage. If you have the money to burn either way and would really like even the possibility of a chance of attending UMMSM, then go ahead and apply 🙂.

To recap: You have a shot, sure. But applying this late is playing med school admissions on "Hard Mode." It's not wasting money, but you're handicapping yourself from the get-go. Of course, there's nothing you can do about that now unless you're okay with waiting another year ... Good luck if you decide to submit!

That is incorrect. Everyone who is interviewed is either accepted, put on the wait list, or rejected. Please refrain from spreading misinformation, seeing as you have nothing to do with the school.

I applied to both for a reason. And, given the blessing of being accepted to both, am going to take the decision very seriously, showing respect to all the other people who applied.

Thanks to the above commenters! My main concern is, will I be as good a physician as an MD only student at the end of 4 years? Also, I'm worried about making friends and then losing hose connections to move away 3rd or 4th year. Can any current students give their POV?
 
Not all interview dates are reviewed at the very next meeting....... Your portal updates when it has been, to Decision Reached.... Also - the committee member probably knows - make that definitely - knows more than you or me

I was considering applying MD/MPH so I might be able to help you think through this, but I would definitely encourage you to reach out to current students (not even just at Miami, MPH programs are similar all over) to see benefits/pitfalls of a dual MD/MPH vs. just MD.

First - will you be a good physician as an MD only student at the end of 4 years? Of course you will. Med school is what you make of it. You sound like a highly motivated student. Just because you don't graduate with an additional three letters at the end of your name doesn't make you any less of a doctor than an MD MPH. That said, will an MPH give you valuable insight, experience, and information that could be pertinent towards your future path as a physician? Yes, of course it will! The question is - what do you foresee yourself doing as a physician? Do you want to work in public health, work in public health policy, work abroad and with global medicine, work with infectious diseases, work with anything that could be related to public health? If your answer to that is yes or even maybe, I think you should go for it.

If you decide that you aren't 100% sure: remember that as an MD student you still have access to global health opportunities and public health research, you could still learn a majority of the information on your own should you choose to do just MD and then decide you should have gone MD/MPH. Again, medical school is what you make of it. If you wanna be a go-getter, then be a go-getter!

As for making friends - I wouldn't have this point be a make or break point of your decision. You'll make friends, guaranteed. Plus, an MPH will allow you to make other MPH friends. Are your friends going to ditch you and decide they don't like you after you move away? No probably not (if they do, they probably weren't great friends to begin with and you're better off without them). Basically - you'll always have friends and people to turn to. Will there be an adjustment period? Of course. Will you be able to manage? I'm sure you will.

You have two incredible opportunities in front of you and I don't think you can go wrong. Go with what you think will be best for you. Ask your friends, ask your family, ask other SDNers, but at the end of the day go with what you think will make you the happiest, most successful (whatever that means to you) physician you can be. Don't know what to tell you mate. I was an applicant last year and I interviewed. They have dates when they tell you they will release all the decisions for people that interviewed and let them know their status whether it's accept, reject, or waitlist. I had multiple dates go by with no notification and calls to admissions finally got me a rejection letter in the mail. So please refrain from trying to correct me from something that actually happened. It may have been a one-off situation, but it happened.

Like I said in my post, I had a great time meeting students and learning about the program at the school. Everything else I said was pretty on point, as was the thing you keep trying to correct me on...

OH! Also, change your tag lol. You're not a first year anymore!

Former member of the adcom here. No need to get upset. Sounds like ride the cliche is telling the truth. Unfortunately sometimes **** happens. No system/nobody is perfect.

Yeah. Zeke's right and helped me through actually getting my head back on straight after that episode and doing well in the interviews that followed so thanks again Dr. Zeke. I'm at a similarly ranked program now and had other acceptances as well, so you can definitely rebound from a bad day. (And I'm sure that Zeke is laughing because I swear I'm not bitter anymore lol)

I really liked the program at Miami and the students were great. I honestly think that the opportunity to interview here shouldn't be taken lightly and that I was very very very impressed with the program even though I applied as an afterthought.

In general, my interview taught me that you need to be ready for just about anything to happen at an interview, including a stress interview of sorts. It was unfortunate that it happened and that I blew up spectacularly at a program I liked, but it's a good lesson to learn.

Seriously, don't take interview prep lightly.

As stated previously, I'm not a student here, but I can answer a bit about the friends bit.

When I toured the second site, I stayed with student hosts. A lot of students that were friends end up living together and it's a pretty close knit group there. From what I was told, the MD/MPH students generally all have classes together anyway, so you tend to spend time with them more. You'll stay with that group of people in 3rd and 4th year so you won't lose the connections you've made. In general though, everyone tends to have a different schedule 3rd and 4th year due to rotations etc, so you definitely have to work a bit harder to figure out when to see people.
 
eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeek logged in today and saw that it said "A final decision has been reached by the Admissions Committee at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine on your application. Contact the admissions ofice 305-243-3234 or [email protected] if you do not receive a telephone call, an e-mail or a letter within seven days." BUT this was only for the MD portion. I interviewed for both MD and MD/MPH on Oct 19/20.
