Does the cane email matter in any way/shape/form? How does it affect me if I'm
Pre-II and my contact info will not be changing?

I'm in the pre-II boat as well. AFAIK, the Cane email thing doesn't matter until you matriculate. They do want you to do it because I believe they will be doing all of their application stuff through that portal as per the email they sent out. That same email included the fact that your Cane portal setup wouldn't affect your application in the slightest.

Wanting so badly to at least interview here. In my top tier of schools. Only been complete since early November so I'm not too neurotic....yet. 🙂

DrZeke wrote a really good post about everything at UM good and bad, so everyone should go read it.

As for cliques...it's really unavoidable. Everyone starts out trying to be friendly towards everyone before and during orientation and maybe a little bit during the first few weeks of anatomy. But then you start forming study groups for anatomy and find that you really only stick with the people you also study with. After the 8 weeks of anatomy is over, you have more free time and most people start branching out more. Friend groups can definitely change. I was recently hurt by someone in my class, and I decided that person wasn't worth keeping as a friend anymore. It sucks but I still have a ton of good friends I can always talk to and hang out with. Bottom line, cliques will happen and drama will happen and friend groups will change, but as long as you always have some core friends you can always fall back on, you will be fine here at UM.
Thank you. Not sure I could cover it all in one post. Clearly my grammar and iPhone typing are disastrous when I am still snoozing...
Thanks for speaking to this topic- out of curiosity, how does the setup of the academic societies play into all of this? Do they contribute to the "clique-iness"? How much do you work and spend time with your society? Do they primarily constitute your study groups, or not necessarily?

I didn't feel UM was that "clique-y". I loved my academic society. I swear we were meant to be. Most of us from my years are still in touch here and there. You take exams in your society and you learn your clinical skills with them. You get pretty tight. I happened to study with people outside my society, but a few people from my society used to study together.

Like DrZeke said, you have a lot of time with your society for clinical skills sessions. Whether or not you'll be close to anyone in your society depends on you. My society is full of chill jokesters and zero gunners, so I love them lol. One of my best friends is in my society, my other best friend is in a different one. I have at least a few friends from each of the 12 societies. They are a great way to make friends but you don't have to restrict yourself to them; in fact, I would recommend doing the exact opposite. Make friends regardless of which society they're in.

I remember being really impressed with the setup of the societies when we toured campus, I thought it was such a cool program

Your application has been reviewed status for 2-3 months. Got that status at another school and got an II 2 months after. Hopefully Miller uses a similar method!

Does anyone know what the weekly schedule is like for MS1 and MS2? I didn't think to ask about it during the interview. Is it lecture + activities all day long, or are there chunks of time for self-study?

I'm hoping so too. My app was reviewed very quickly after I submitted, back at the end of July, so it's been almost 5 months now. I'm starting to lose hope though :/

(For MD) It varies depending on the module as harder modules generally cover more material and, therefore, more hours of lecture. But, in general, you will have 3-4 hrs of lecture a day MWF (9am-noon, 1-2pm) and you may have small group stuff in the afternoon (ex: anatomy dissections/presentations, pathology small group). Small group frequency varies significantly depending on the block, some will have something more days than not and some will have none or barely any. T/Th you will generally have 2 basic science lectures 9-11 am, doctoring lecture 11a-noon, and then one day or the other you will have doctoring clinical skills training, inpatient training, or preceptor in the afternoon.

All lectures are recorded and with very few exceptions the only things that are mandatory are small group stuff and doctoring training. Most units are 4-6 weeks and have a midterm and a final. Midterms are usually on Mondays with reviews the previous Th/F. Finals usually on Fridays with reviews W/Th.

Thank you for the detailed answer!

Its been 7 weeks since my interview and I haven't heard back yet. I know that people who interviewed on the same day as me have already gotten responses (placed on hold etc). I feel silly but should I call the admissions office to make sure everything is on track?
(the status page says applicants should hear back within 4-6 weeks of the interview)

Did anyone visit before applying / does anyone know if they offer tours? Im applying next cycle but I wanted to tour over spring break and can't find it on the website for some reason.

That's not typical. Most med school don't offer tours before you apply. You can and ask admissions if they can arrange something

Has anyone been able to do the deposit yet? I called them a couple of weeks ago, and they said they were behind the Dec 1 date given in the acceptance letter, but I'm starting to worry.....

I was able to pay late last week through CaneLink. In the Student Center, the "My Applications" section in the bottom used to say Incomplete. At some point after I was accepted it changed to a link to accept the admission offer and then pay the deposit. After I paid, the section reverted to saying Incomplete though, so I'm not sure what I did was the right thing.

Hm thank you, good to know! Will try again and if it still doesn't work contact them after the holidays.

Does anyone know when the admission office is closed for the holidays? Just called but no answer. Suppose I'll call back later.

II yesterday!! Complete waaaay back at the end of July. Got the "your app has been scored" status change like 3 months ago. Does anyone know if there's transportation from the miami dade campus to palm beach?
I highly recommend renting a car!!

Anyone else not able to log into their portal?

Deposit paid! I had favorited the application status page, but you have to click through the menu at the top. There's a new drop down in Admissions called UM Accept Admission where it guides you through the deposit!

"Your application has been reviewed by the Admissions Committee at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. At this time, a final decision has not been reached on your application."

did anyone else get this? or know what it means?

An hour and a half in the morning for a few presentation and breakfast
Then one hour interviews and one hour tours switching off
Then about a one hour lunch and Q and A session with current students as well as a final presentation
I think a couple people had interviews after this presentation, but the rest could go home

Your interview ends up being an hour with one of the faculty members who scored your application. It's one on one and open file, from my experience.

Thank you!

I just tried to sign-on to Canelink and got a message saying my CaneID is disabled. I have previously signed on with success- has anyone else had this issue?

is this considered a pre-II hold?

Hello. This is a parent of a future/potential MD applicant. Wondering whether anyone has answers to the following questions.

- How many "Merit Scholarships" are awarded to the freshmen MD class?
- For Merit Scholarships, Is "UG GPA and MCAT" are the only criteria? If yes, may we know the past average GPA/MCAT scores of those scholarship winners.

I have "Your application has been reviewed by the Admissions Committee at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. Applicant will be invited to interview based upon their evaluation score from the Admissions Committee review. You will be contacted by email if selected for an interview. Interview invitations are extended between August and March.

No, it means that you should be hearing back from them sometime soon about a II or otherwise.

For those that have been accepted we were told that we can submit updates to the admissions committee for scholarship consideration...Does anyone know how the committee wants them submitted?

Are you seeing this through the portal or canelink?

II today! A fantastic end to 2015, if I may say so! OOS, complete July/August.

Ppl who have interviewed: what is the format? (single or multiple one-on-one interviews?)

do you remember what your portal read pre-II?

Through the portal. Canelink is just how they upload your biographical information I believe. I've had this status for about 3 months now.

Well guys, I've been scored and a final decision has been made!!! I'm hoping for a call Wednesday saying I'm in, but in all honesty I'm sure there are much better applicants on the list that will be accepted. I'm hopeful that over time I will eventually get that call 🙂 Does anyone remember if it was the top 25 or 50 that come off the list at each meeting? I'm pretty sure it's 25 but I wanted to make sure.
It's top 20.

I thought it was top 30.

In the same boat as you - the status change popped up for me today as well. I know odds are better at getting in the third or fifth or sixth admissions committee meeting after I've been put on the board, but wow it's hard not to be hopeful. I'm very excited for Wednesday...

Good luck to you as well!
