2015-2016 University of Miami (Miller) Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
If y'all have not received acknowledgement of updates via email, you can try calling the admissions office directly and asking them if they received your update email. However, understand that the admissions office is always very busy, so don't get frustrated by the long wait times. Good luck to everyone this semester! If you end up interviewing these next few months, you might have the chance to meet me on an interview tour or lunch lol.

How will we know it's you? ;p I am actually interviewing this Friday.

Congrats to those of you who have been accepted and have been offered an interview! Do you guys mind sharing your stats if that's not too obnoxious asking?

I've never actually posted stats, mostly because I'd be afraid of coming off obnoxious, but if you think it's helpful, I'm happy to help out.

Non-traditional student. Undergrad: 2.9 gpa. Decided to try to become a doctor a few years after college and took extensive additional courses, both med school pre-reqs and additional science course (many at a graduate level) with something like a 3.85 gpa. MCAT 35. A handful of long term volunteer commitments, service on a advocacy/oversight board for my city's public transit, and 11 months of long term travel were the highlights of my ECs. No research experience, save the work I did in my classes (which, while definitely not like doing research towards a publication or anything, did familiarize me with many of the techniques and much of the work done in lab research).

Secondary filed in July, file complete in August, interview invite in October, interviewed November, accepted last week.

Anyone else interviewing MD/MPH for the January 25th/26th date? PM me if you want to split a rental car for the drive up to West Palm Beach.

Thank you for sharing! You knew what you wanted. You went for it. And you got it. Congrats champ!

Congrats! See you at second look (and hopefully everyone else here too)!

Submitted secondary early November, 3.9/507, still says under review. Anyone in a similar situation?

Submitted first week of august, not even scored yet/still under review. Only 1 of 3 updates acknowledged too. This is brutal.

Just FYI, I believe updates aren't considered unless you have already been granted an interview. Also, the long response time to updates seems to be the norm. I remember it taking several weeks to get a response when I sent them an update after my interview last cycle.

Thanks so much, I'm still freaking out haha

I think I was accepted 11/4, whatever the second decision date was
Oooh me too I wonder if it'll be in my mail.......

Did they say if it's a scholarship? Does that include loans? Also, did you already submit the fafsa?

Sorry for all the questions, and congrats!

Just scholarship, no loans. I haven't filled out the FAFSA yet but this all reminded me I need to get on that lol.

Nothing in the mail but literally on the other corner of the country so..... keeping my fingers crossed 😛 that's amazing, congrats!!!

Just got the financial aid letter today... 120k off of tuition for MD/MPH :wow:
That is wonderful, congratulations!

If I may ask, did you list yourself as disadvantaged on AMCAS? I'm curious to know if need-based grants like these are awarded before we submit FAFSA or other information.

I did not list myself as disadvantaged. To my knowledge, this award is for merit-based aid.

Also for everyone who has been accepted, how long did it take for acceptance letters to come in the mail after the phone call?

I'm wondering this, too! Everyday I come home from work hoping that the acceptance packet has arrived, and everyday I'm disappointed!

I was accepted 12/9 and didn't get the packet until 12/18, and I live in state. So if it's been a week or so, I wouldn't fret

Did you get an actual packet? I've only received the initial letter in the small envelope :/

Hello! New user here. Recently accepted (1/6) OOS interviewed 12/14 and looking at Miami as one of my top choices. I'm from Washington state, and really looking to come back here for my residency, as I know I want to practice medicine in the PNW. I'm looking at the match lists at Miami and I'm noticing no matches in Washington in 2015, and only one in Oregon (OHSU). I'm wondering if anyone knows about visiting clerkship opportunities at Miami? Or in general, how the matching process usually works for students interested in returning to their home state?

Thanks so much!

I'm only a first year, but I know that during third year, you can set up externships (away rotations). UM will work with you to get everything squared away. You are only allowed up to 3 months of aways, I think.

The match is a computer algorithm that uses residency applicants' rank lists and program directors' rank lists. You get matched to the highest program on your rank list that also ranked you very highly. For more info, go to the residency forums and you'll find a more detailed explanation of the match.

You could very well match somewhere that's not the PNW. It all depends on your interest in a specific program in that region, how competitive you are as an applicant, and how competitive that program is. IIRC, UW is a very top ranked program for many different specialties, so it's hard to match there for anyone.

My best advice to you would be to not pick a med school based on your hypothetical chances of matching back to your home state. Choose the med school that you feel has the best fit for you and can help you do your best to become a great doctor. UM is awesome. It's not perfect, but no med school is. I'm very happy to be here, and I know most of my classmates are too. Good luck!

Oh, and if any fourth years or UM alumni could chime in here and correct any misinformation I may have given/add your own input, please do so.

You're also ignoring the fact that many people that go to Miami for school hope to practice in that part of the country, so you're seeing an inherent selection bias. It's not that Umiami can't match into the PNW, it's just that people probably choose not to.

Also, doing a residency in a different part of the country still gives you the option of going back and practicing in the PNW should you choose to do so. That region just doesn't have the health infrastructure of many other places in the country re: total med schools and residency spots.

Thank you! I'm definitely going to learn more about the externships. I appreciate the advice, it's something I've definitely kept in mind when considering my options. Ultimately, I know choosing the best fit program for myself is the best way to be competitive for residencies.

Yes, thanks for pointing that out! I realize that there is so much more to just looking at a match list and trying to draw any conclusions. I was wondering if there is something I may be missing, and it definitely could be just that people are choosing to stay within the region.

PNW!!!! Washingtonians unite haha

I received the acceptance letter yesterday, too, and I was a bit bummed that it was only a small initial letter as well. I was hoping for at least information on when second look day will be to start planning.

Someone posted in the current students group that Second Look is Friday April 15th, so I'd recommend planning your trip from the 14-17th. If you're wanting to go ahead and make travel arrangements I would call the admissions office to confirm though.

Scoring is a rolling process and can be finalized at any time.

It seems like you're in the know. My application still hasn't been scored yet, despite submitting my secondary in July. Since the scoring isn't done based on competitiveness, could you comment on a potential reason why I haven't been scored yet?

I can understand being relegated to the reconsider pile if my application isn't competitive but it seems that I haven't been considered at all for an interview for the bulk of the application cycle for some reason that isn't related to my competitiveness. And that thought kind of rankles.

Thanks for the info.

I actually did call the Admissions Office and they said that the date hadn't been finalized, but at this moment they were actually looking at April 8th. So I suppose I'll just hang tight until they firm up the date.

OHSU is generally highly ranked amongst the specialties. If you are from the west you should have an easier time going back west because your state residency will show them you have a connection to that part of the country. However it's always easiest to go to coveted parts of the country with higher scores, grades and/or top 20 med school. Or... If you stay in that state/region for med school... Nobody wants to hear that stuff, but it's just true. The people who have their pick in the match tend to be highly competitive applicants.

You are far off from the match but it is something to think about.

Hi all, I interviewed about a month ago and my application status now says:

"A final decision has been reached by the Admissions Committee at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine on your application. Contact the admissions ofice 305-243-3234 or [email protected] if you do not receive a telephone call, an e-mail or a letter within seven days." in green font.

Does anyone know if that equates to acceptance, reject or alternate? Or...Wild Card!

Thanks in advanced!

Ah, this earlier post (towards end of page) sort of addresses the question.
