2015-2016 University of Texas - Galveston Application Thread

II a couple weeks ago. Who will be attending the interview this Friday?

Anyone doing the AMWA housing? I haven't heard from them for a couple of weeks. My interview is in about 11 days. I just want to know if this is usual !
I did the hosting and they notified me 7 days before my interview, otherwise I hadn't heard back until then after the request conformation.

I've looked at prior threads and their website, but have not gotten a lot of info dealing with the student body or even general knowledge about campus and such. Does anyone have a link to a page where I could read more about this school? Would be greatly appreciated 😉

Would it be too risky to book a 6:10pm flight departing from Hobby if the interview day ends at roughly 3:30?

If you interview in the morning session you could probably leave by 230-3 because the last tour they do not keep track of who's where. My tour guide was okay if we left a little early for a reason such as that. That being said if you do have an interview that goes till 330 and you leave right away you're looking at getting there 445-5 due to traffic, which is manageable. If you aren't checking bags and someone drops you off at the door it can be done. You could maybe request morning interviews but I don't know how receptive they are to that.

Thank you! I didn't know that about the tour, though I should be prepared in case I have an afternoon interview. I won't be checking any bags and I'll have someone drop me off at the door -- would you recommend a cab or Uber, or are they about the same?

I've lived in Galveston for the past 8 years, and you could probably make it. It's cutting it close though. Pay for a real cab and call ahead to arrange pickup time and location. Then Confirm again before interview. Good luck.

For someone who is renting a car, what's the earliest you'd say I could be flying out of Hobby?

Finally received the under review email! Hope I'm not too late.

Hmmm. Assuming you'll be done at 330, it's hard to say because you never know exactly how much time returning the car will add. I would assume at least a half an hour, and I would plan for 45 minutes. So, you could probably make a 6:30 flight, but 7 would be ideal. I'm slipping right into this logistics stuff. Maybe that'll be my backup of medicine doesn't work out. ;-) good luck on your interview.

II today 8/20
Transmitted - 7/21
Interview date - 10/2

Even though I have two letters in on TMDSAS, (one required and one extra) the other required TMDSAS letters writer still hasn't even finished writing

I'm getting really anxious having not received any IIs at all. 31 MCAT, 3.9 GPA, decent ECs. My TMDSAS was transmitted 7/16 and received under review email at UTMB 8/3.
Someone reassure me please 🙁

LizzyM 71 and I transmitted 7/20 got an under review 7/21. Still nothing from them. The only school I've heard anything from is San Antonio. There's still so much time, though!

Yeah I know I keep telling myself there's like 80% of the interviewing season remaining but still lol.... Would be really gratifying to receive an II from anyone.

I am in the same shoes as you. No II at all. We have about the same stats.

Your stats look really good and right on par with these schools avgs. Hang in there and I'm sure you'll hear something soon.

Idk about anyone else, but my interview experience here this past weekend was really positive! This is my #1 choice right now and I hope I prematch

I'm good friends with one of the assistant deans at UTMB. Through talking with him I have gained a bit of insight into the process which may offer you some reassurance. So, there is a certain percentage of applicants which are, at least on paper, perfect. All of the schools court these applicants first as they all know that they will be offered admissions elsewhere. So, the vast majority of the IIs you see floating around these message boards thus far likely belong to applicants from this group or perhaps less perfect URM, as they are also fiercely competed over. These folks are going to interview everywhere and take a lot of interview slots. But don't fret sir, because the fact is that these folks can only attend one school. Soon, admissions folks will begin moving on to the majority of the applicant pool which didn't get classed into this first group. Your stats are excellent. You will get your shot.

Don't worry we have similar stats and I have had 2 interviews and 3 more scheduled so far

This is a general question, but does anyone know when's the last date you can take the MCAT and have it count towards this current cycle?

Congrats on the interview! Any insider tips on how the day went? Were the interviewers more conversational or MMI-esque? Thanks!

Yea, my advice would be to approach the interview with an appreciative mindset for the opportunity to interview there. UTMB Galveston seems to really care about their students and the success of their students, so just go in with a calm, confident mindset and you will do great! My experience was basically them trying to understand who I am as a person and why I want to study medicine

Edit: Idk what MMI esque is haha

@neuroimagining Every interviewer has their own style and not every interview will be the same. My first interview at UTMB was more scenario based with ethical questions, and my second consisted of typical topics such as my motivations to pursue medicine, greatest strengths and weaknesses ect...But at the same time, there were others during my interview day who had more conversational type interviews. You never really know what kind of interview you'll have until you get there.

@aggieman122 @Cookie04 Thanks to both for your two cents! I guess it really ranges in style then. What I meant by MMI-esque are those ethical scenarios that @Cookie04 described; seems like schools that don't go all out MMI per se work a few into the traditional interview format.

Congrats to both again for a solid interview completed 🙂

I know that utmb sends out ~1,100 II and offers 230 seats, but does anyone know how many total acceptances/offers are sent out? I'm asking because I couldn't find any information about this and I am certain that there will be a number of people who will be offered acceptances at utmb but end up going elsewhere.

Supposedly the rule of thumb is usually at least double the number of seats

Thanks for the info. I really liked utmb's curriculum, the campus in general, and the laid back atmosphere.

Looks like UTMB sent out ~460 acceptances last year

You dont know how much better I feel after reading this.

Anyone else get the "application received" email twice? I got it first over 2 weeks ago and just got it again.

So I've received the "application complete/received/under review" emails from pretty much all the other Texas schools (they all came in about 2 weeks ago), but not from Galveston yet. Did anyone else waiting on that email call the admissions office or anything like that?

My experience is from a while back, but I was also in your situation. I had received the confirmation email from all Texas schools but not UTMB. When I called them, they told me that they had my app. Literally less than 2 hours later I received the confirmation email from them. I would say to call, doesn't hurt.

Have you interviewed at UTMB for this cycle? Where else have you interviewed?

Thanks - I think I'll go ahead and do that tomorrow.

So what's the general turnaround for a II after you are under review?

So I called today and and was basically told that only once the admissions committee notified them about anything regarding my application would I receive that email. I didn't want to be too pester-y, so I guess that'll hold me over for another 2 weeks or so. :xf:

Wow, II today! That was a quicker turn around than I expected. Pretty excited!
Congratulations. It makes me happy to see Americans succeed. It gives me hope that we can make this country great again.
