2015-2016 University of Texas - Galveston Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Yeah neither of my interviewers had my application in front of them, although I'm sure some interviewers might!
But yes, they don't get your numbers 🙂

For those who already interviewed, when did you receive information on your student host?

Just interviewed today! The students are really laid-back, and everyone I spoke to was so friendly and helpful, especially since I kept getting lost on campus out in all the rain...

I interviewed here today too and had a great experience! Also, I learned that there is a mistake on my TMDSAS app. It shows that I do not intend to graduate with a degree from my undergrad institution and that I don't have a major! I cant believe I submitted it like that 🙁

Well you still got an interview despite that 🙂

I'll be driving down there in a couple of weeks, and their warning to definitely bring an umbrella is almost making me more nervous than the interview itself. Almost.

The morning of my interview here, I was literally drenched in rain. Didn't help that I forgot to pack an umbrella and couldn't dry clean my suit because I had back to back interviews. So yeah, bring a umbrella if you can! Also, the garage they suggested is a bit far from the campus. I would highly recommend parking in the lot closer to the school for $10 if it does pour outside haha. Or take an uber.

Yup forgot my umbrella too. Was soaking by the time I got to my interview. My interviewer was nice about it, but I looked super wet. 🙁

Well I guess the nice thing about living in Seattle is I always have an umbrella in my purse so there's no chance I'll forget to bring it. Yay Seattle!

Yes, definitely bring an umbrella! We also received an email the day before recommending us to also bring raincoats, ponchos, and rain boots.

Rain boots definitely won't fit in my carry-on 🙁 the forecast is good for Friday though

Lol rain boots weren't necessary for us. The MS that gave us tour were nice and didn't make us walk outside in the rain much. I would recommend a pair of comfortable flats though if you're a girl (and wearing heels).

Yikes! Thanks for the advice, everyone! I'll definitely bring my rain jacket and an umbrella, then. And my go-to interview heels have started coming apart slightly, so I guess it's time for some changes, haha.

Btw it cracks me up that you're nervous about the forecast and having to bring an umbrella, given your screen name xD

EEEK Interview invite for 10/23! Really enjoyed visiting this school last March and can't wait to get back 😀 Looks like the time has come for us procrastinators out there...
Congratz!
When did you get the Review email and mind sharing your stats?

Thanks,

I haven't heard back since mid-July 🙁 Does that mean my app has been passed over?

I'm in the same boat. It definitely means we've been set aside, but they don't toss you in the same way a lot of schools do. The total applicant pool is much smaller in Texas because of TMDSAS and that changes the dynamics of the whole process considerably. Hang in there!

Do y'all think getting the under review email twice means anything?

Add me to the list of people who haven't heard back from schools!!! Transmitted 7/16 have received Under Review from all schools but no IIs yet. I have been perusing old threads and it looks to me that a whole bunch of people actually interview in the latter half of the application cycle and still manage to be successful, so there's a lot of reason to still be hopeful. I have actually been preparing for interviews despite having an II because i) it helps me calm down ii) it gives me something to focus on iii) you might literally get swamped by interviews as you never know...

I just applied widely and interviewed outside of Texas... Just in case. It helps a lot!

Thanks,

Thank you! I received my email 9/1 and I'm an IS applicant w/4.0 & 504 MCAT.

@almond2, my application was transmitted to the school 8/25.

This was my first II, haven't got a single email from UTH or UTSA 🙁
There's still a good amount of time for everyone though!

Yes, just not to one particular school.
Was just curious because I was hired as a JAMP tutor, and my students told me as long as they get at least a 500 and maintain like 3.2 or something they are guaranteed admissions, but I always wondered how they match to schools.

We compete amongst ourselves following that point i had a 3.7 im biochem and 30 old mcat we do have a rank preference list and luckily i got my top choice
oooh okay didn't make sense to be part of the regular app pool.
Congrats! 🙂

Jamp students are guaranteed a spot to a Texas medical school, but just like regular Texas applicants they still have to rank the schools and the medical schools have to rank them. So Jampers still have to compete with one another for an acceptance to their top choice school even though they are guaranteed an acceptance somewhere in Texas. This is why all Jamp students still have to conduct interviews at all of the Texas medical schools.

Seeking input from a current student here --

I've found a lot of info online about curriculum and lifestyle here but not much about research. Is that emphasized? I noticed that many students research at the Galveston National Laboratory, but are there any established outlets for research?

I'm not a current medical student, but I live in Galveston and did a research internship at UTMB during undergrad. There is a lot of research going on here in virtually every major biomedical field. They receive something like $70 M from NIH annually for 120+ projects. You will not have any trouble finding research here if that's what your after.

Edit: I'm not sure what you mean by established outlets. Also, you will find a great deal more research at UTSW or Baylor in terms of the number of projects and the amount of funding. I think UTSW receives something like $250 M from NIH alone.

Had my interviews here yesterday, and had a great time! Both of mine were very conversational, and I didn't once feel like I was being grilled. It was an impressive campus with a lot of history - I only wish I had a bottle of water with me for the tours, because it was a very, very warm day in Galveston, haha.

To give you guys an update on the timing
Transmitted Last week of September. Application "Received" Email this week.

+pity+:whoa:

I'm ecstatic! I got an interview invite here!!! Definitely one of my top choices, based on location and curriculum.

My question for you all is how to best get to the school? Is there some type of shuttle from IAH or HOU airports that goes to Galveston? I need to research this a bit more.

Also, I'm slightly nervous seeing as Galveston interviews so many more students than it accepts. Do you think it's because less accept positions or just that they like to really vet candidates?

Wish me luck 🙂
When did you receive the interview and what date did they give you?
Also, if you don't mind sharing your stats and when your TMDSAS was transmitted.

Thanks,

Very easy to pinpoint an individual with all of that information :ninja::laugh:

That's the first time I've heard of this one.
It's no biggie haha people usually ask LizzyM, day transmitted, and day the individual received II. The date they gave him/her the II is even more specific, that if you think about it, the admins (don't think they have time for that) or friends could easily identify.

The reason I asked him what II date he was given is so I can judge for myself how many potential interview slots they have filled up and how many they have left.

There is absolutely nothing incriminating by sharing these details and it absolutely would not jeopardize your privacy. Hence why I said its the first time I've seen people not sharing their II date/transmission. Stats I understand though.

If if said person has commented bad stuff on here, he can easily be pin pointed with that info. by an adcom. But no biggie man, just stating my opinion 😉 Best of luck in the application cycle! Let the group know if you do get an invite and it is still early and probably around 7-10 more interview dates to be filled! 👍

I have an interview here (LizzyM 69-70) on the 30th of October, and I live very close to IAH; if anyone needs a ride, I wouldn't mind taking them with me to Galveston.

Current student here and there are plenty of research opportunities. If you want to do research you won't have a problem.
