2015-2016 University of Washington Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Anyone try an ITA email (Portland to Seattle is much closer than east coast to Seattle). Would be nice to even get a rejection so I can eat more meals without worrying.

Was hoping for some good news from UW today but only got silence :/

II! IS with low stats but some interesting medical research experience and and a lot of volunteer time working with underserved populations. Dreams really do come true! *sniff*

Are students who are accepted notified via phone call?
Usually, but not always. Make sure your ph # is correct on your application if you changed it since submitting your AMCAS application. Getting to hear excited accepted students screaming for joy is one of the few rewards Excom members receive.

@BABSstudent For the interview, is there a role play or ethical scenario, or both?
thanks!
Role play. If the applicant has done adequate shadowing, this is where that experience is helpful......as in when/how to use a translator, when to involve child protective services, what is age of consent, what is statutory rape, how to negotiate marital conflict, how to preserve confidentiality, etc.

There is only a single interview date available all the at through March - and its on a day I'm flying to interview on the east coast. Does anyone know how likely spots will open?

I'd call. Dates open randomly and that's a legitimate request.

They add interview dates almost every day. Just check once or twice a day, something will open up.

why were you expecting on the 16th in particular? Do they usually call applicants on certain days? Or a certain number of weeks out from your interview? Just curious what the logic was here so I could jump on board with obsessing after my interview....

They told me we'd hear back in 4 to 6 weeks after the interview. Based on last year's thread, probably the very end of October or beginning of November is when they do the first EXCOM meeting.

The 15th was the first day schools couldve notified acceptances and it seemed like most schools let some students know then. But not UW I guess.. I didnt know about what idontknowwhatnametopick said

my interview was on the 13th... do you think i will be included in their first excom meeting?

Could you be included? Yes.
Will you be included? Who knows.

A few people will be accepted right away. But remember this is where the still under considerations start to happen. The majority of the class will not be admitted until much later in the cycle. Just because you don't get accepted right away doesn't mean anything. There could be a number of reasons, including your EXCOM member didn't show up to the meeting. It could be because you were not brought up. It could be that they want to wait until more interviews have happened.

It's been a month since my II and still no schedule email, should I just call the regular admissions line to ask about it or what? I hate to annoy them but I have to request any time off from work for Nov/Dec/January ASAP because of holiday scheduling and all.

Since you have a legitimate scheduling need I'd say calling would probably be fine.

I have been doing a bit of reading on Medical Ethics. Does that seem to be a common thread for interviews, as well?

It is not so much ethics as questions that gauge if you empathetic. Do you jump to conclusions or do you try to hear the other person? Do you judge or do you try to understand what you may not know at first?

* They don't ask dicey questions. As long as you put the patient first, you'll know the answer.

Has anyone figured out when the next EXCOM meeting will be. It usually is in the last week of Oct. But I've heard rumors it's in early Nov. this time.

II OOS!!!!!!!!! LizzyM = 71 I cannot believe this! This is a dream, reach school! I got goosebumps when I read the email. Words cannot even begin to grasp how happy I am right now. Sending positive vibes to the rest of the SDN community!

I hope it's after Nov 4th so i can hear quick news! 🙂

Any fellow Alaskans up in here? I hate how late the interview dates are for us! (Feb 1-4th) Exciting to read about others' experiences though! Congrats to everyone and keep the good news coming

I got another reminder about the Spokane interview process from UW today. I felt kind of weird about this when I applied at first, too-- they seem to really want people to make Spokane their primary by emphasizing how you have better odds (less competition) and find out your results sooner.

I'd be happy with either site but I'm also not entirely comfortable with switching over to Spokane as my primary still due to the way the evaluation process is separated. I did say in my app that I'm fine with either but have slight preference for Seattle (because I live there already and would be able to save on living expenses.) I'm not really sure why they've set it up this way and what the goal is for them? Is there a specific target audience they want to go to Spokane, or what?

Is that true? I thought i was told that there were no better odds with choosing Spokane.. Else i would have preferred the Spokane site, i love that city

When I applied (and in this email today) they said the new thing this year is that Spokane interviewees are only compared to Spokane interviewees and not Seattle ones. Email today says:

This year, the University of Washington School of Medicine has changed the way we are interviewing and selecting students to attend Spokane for their Foundations phase (first 18 months) of medical school. We wanted to be sure that all applicants are aware of our new interview and selection processes, and give you the chance to change your preferred Foundations site.

For the entering class of 2016, those interested in spending their Foundations phase in Spokane will be interviewed by a panel dedicated to selecting these students. If you opt to interview in Spokane, you will be compared to other Spokane interviewees (approximately 100) rather than to applicants interviewing in Seattle (approximately 500). Also, you are more likely to find out whether you were accepted or not within 2 weeks of the time you interviewed. By contrast, although Seattle interviews are held from October through March, and some applicants are admitted intermittently, the majority of applicants don’t learn about the final status of their application until mid-March.

The Spokane interview dates are December 3, 4, 7 & 8 and January 7, 8, 11 & 12. Please note that all October and November interviews have already been assigned, so all applicants who have not yet chosen an interview date will be interviewing in December or later.

Applicants who interview in Spokane and are accepted to the UWSOM will attend Spokane for their Foundations phase, but are free to do their clinical training anywhere in the five-state region.
Then it pitches how Spokane is great and tells you to contact them ASAP if you want to switch and you may be able to get a December date.

I'm guessing they didn't have many people opt for Spokane and want to move more people there? I feel like there must be a catch though.

The catch is that it's Spokane...

The catch is that it's Spokane...
I mean... Yes (lol) but that's not such a huge catch that the bonus they're implying makes sense, I don't think. I guess I'm mildly suspicious that they want to even out their interviews between committees and are overstating the possible benefits in admissions rates to entice people to go along with it.

Hmm thats interesting.. I dont recall ever getting that email. I was still under the impression that I was interviewing for both when I had my interview in Seattle.

Also, that email makes it sound like they accept most of their Seattle students in March.. Which is scary..

When i went to an info session with the director of admissions she did say that most people get put on hold after their interview, which isn't a bad sign. Very few people, apparently, get accept outright after the interview.

Good luck everyone!

What do you think I have been saying! The majority of the class gets is accepted in March and then the waitlist is created.

I don't think that's it. I don't know for sure, but I think one factor may be that they want to show increased commitment to that side of the state. Basically the idea behind this is that if someone wants to go to Spokane, then they are more likely to further down the road actually practice on that side of the state instead of Seattle. Could also be that someone who prefers a small town may actually then want to practice in more rural areas ANYWHERE in the state. Part of the school's mission is to train doctors for the whole state (not just Seattle) as they are funded by the state. Thus, those applicants who demonstrate that get a boost.

Another reason is probably that in the past more people just want to go to Seattle and some end up unhappy that they got Spokane. This may not have been such a big deal in the past because at least the 2nd year was in Seattle but now all of the first two years are at your foundation site. Thus, they want to set people up for success by ensuring that they place where they actually want to go and also this ensures transparency of where your foundation site will be.

However, not sure if this means ALL of the Spokane class will be selected by only the Spokane applicants. I don't know if that was clear.

Just adding some OOR data to the list:

Amcas Verified 8/19, Pre on 9/9, Secondary on 9/18

I think its important to remember that this application process contains both subjective and objective portions. Much like medicine itself, the numbers are relevant only within the context of the situation. For example, if I test my blood glucose it's off the charts, but if I tell you I just ate a donut it puts it in perspective. Mcat, GPA, 'hours', are merely metrics that we can easily post and compare.

I never received a mission statement. I just received secondary....should I contact Admissions about this?

Are you in-region or OOR? Only OOR applicants received the mission statement, I believe. Either way, I would take the secondary and run.

Oh I see. I am an Idaho applicant so maybe that is why.

Can someone please offer a perspective on reinterviewing? I interviewed on a Thursday and heard back the following Monday. I realize where I went wrong but if I was offered a second interview, does that mean someone must have liked what I had to say? Are my chances of getting accepted lower having a second interview or is it just another shot?

From what I've heard it just means your two interviewers strongly disagreed. So one of them loved you and the other hated you.
It basically just gives you a blank slate I think.
At the lunch on my day, one of the current students had to re-interview and clearly it worked out because she's in.

It means there was a divergence of opinions and after discussing your interview/application, the 3 who interviewed you decided that you deserve a 2nd interview with a whole new set of interviewers. Only the Excom member will have the opportunity to look at what comments were made by the 1st interviewers. When the Excom member asks questions, take a moment to figure out what they are really asking because they are probably trying to clarify something that caused divergence in the first set of interviewers. Your chances of getting accepted eventually are NOT lower but I would doubt you would be in the "exceptional, lets offer an acceptance right now" category, so be prepared and not disappointed if you get a SUDs notice.
