2015-2016 University of Washington Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'm a non-traditional applicant with WA state residency currently living overseas. I have applied through the secondary stage (and been denied an interview) twice. I think my stats are okay (32 MCAT/3.8 GPA), but I'm curious what the red flag was with my application. I'm a mom and I've spent most of my career as a high school teacher and community college professor (A&P), and I'm thinking maybe teaching doesn't get a lot of love in the realm of clinical experience. In contrast, I applied to an out-of-state school and was accepted a little more than a week after my interview. Does anyone know if there is a way to get specific feedback if you don't make it to the interview stage?

Yeesh. UW just gave me a heart attack with their recent email starting with, "Due to the high volume of applications..."

I thought I was rejected, but it just said that they'll continue reviewing apps and send secondaries into December!

Mission statement submitted: 9/15 :xf::xf:

it was nice meeting you! & I totally agree with timsk on this! They are sooo welcoming! everything I saw during interview reassured everything I had researched about the school and so much more! I was truly impressed! UWSOM is so much more amazing than on paper/online. The possibilities are endless with UWSOM...I am crossing fingers to hear back a positive from this school <3 <3 <3 <3
It was nice meeting you as well! Keep me posted on your progress. Good luck!

I did not get this email… Doesn't look too good for me…

II just now. I really did not expect an interview invite based on my stats. Is UW selective as far as interview invites go?

Are you in state or in region? For IS about 50% of people who apply get interviews. For OOS and OOR you might as well buy a powerball ticket

Ditto!! 🙂

I believe you are able to speak with admissions (whether by email or phone or in person) to get feedback as to why you are not getting to the next phase of applications. In terms of the out of state school accepting you, well it really depends what school it is...there are so many and in such a wide range of rankings that it could be that the other school falls below UWSOM (which is very likely since UWSOM is top notch Nationwide!) Clinical experience has often been defined in SDN as being able to see physician/patient interactions/relationships...or personal clinical experience with patients. Teaching at a community college is neither of those so it would not get ANY love in the realm of clinical experience. I hope this helps! Contact them...is probably the best thing you can do. Admissions are very willing to meet and talk about your prospects at UWSOM.

I am in region. I guess 50% is not bad considering my stats.

UW doesn't really care about stats. They have a table on their website that shows GPA vs mcat and how many people apply/are accepted in each grade category, and having high MCAT and GPA is helpful but clearly not a guarantee.
UW's 10th and 90th percentiles are extremely far from one another.

Right?! I submitted 09/06 though which puts me at the 10 week mark so I'm not sure what to think about their "it is currently taking 8-10 weeks" statement. I'm hoping I'm still in the running!

For those of you that have interviewed, can you take a moment to update the SDN interview feedback page? There is feedback regarding previous cycles, but it would help to get an aggregate data set for the 2015-2016 cycle, including questions, impressions, etc... I've attached a link below for your convenience.

II on Nov 10th. IS. I applied into the TRUST program as well, which specifically interviews in February. The initial email did not specify for which program I was being considered. Anybody else in this boat?
Yep, same boat. I called and asked and they said that they interview first week of February and then decide if they will take you in for TRUST, only for the MD program, or hold/reject. Basically the interview is when the decision is made. Good luck, see you then!

Got an email from UWSOM and thought it may have been the results of my interview. But it wasn't. It was the admissions staff emailing us an extra resource that they already emailed us on Monday. Why you do that UWSOM?

I know right? And I interviewed ages ago so I think so far I've gotten 3 (maybe 4?) of those emails.

Whenever I get these emails my heart freaks out! I get a similar feeling when I get a call from an unknown 206 number...
Tell me about it 🙁 recently an unknown 206 number called me and I called back and got the voicemail "this is the office of Dr ..............." And until I heard the doctor's name I was hoping it would be my EXCOM's name. But it wasn't 🙁

Ugh, I just realized I made a mistake. Hopefully this isn't fatal, but maybe I'm just being neurotic...

"After your interview, you are welcome to send thank you notes, and grade updates to the Office of Admissions.
Please do not contact your interviewers directly. "

The day after my interview I was researching my EXCOM member who was on my panel and came across his email and sent him a thank you note directly to his UW email. Clearly I either never caught that bolded line, or forgot!

I came so close to doing the same thing; it definitely could have been restated somewhere. Honest mistake, you should be fine.

So I was hoping to send thank you cards a week after(today) but something unexpected came up...so to do them or not anymore ...hmmm

Yup I received the same information... Thank you, good luck to you as well!

Just got a call from one of the doctors that interviewed me here last week. Accepted!!! He said i'll be receiving the email next week. That same number called me earlier today but i didn't answer it because it was a 425 number that i didn't recognize. They didn't leave a message so i forgot about it. They just called again and i decided i'd answer and tell them they had the wrong number. Lesson learned...sometimes unknown calls from Bellevue can have great news!

Stats???

How long does it take between the phone call and the offer showing up on your online portal?

This is awesome! I've not heard anything...so I assumer I'll be seeing a SUC email soon! 🙂 Here's to being classmates ::fingers crossed::

LizzyM around 72/73, IS, work in clinical research and have worked extensively with the underserved.

Their program really blew me away on interview day. Good luck to all others. Am wondering if anyone else who interviewed in November heard back yet?

👍👍👍👍

Way to go man!!! No doubt the people who have gotten accepted already certainly deserve it 👍👍👍

What time did you all receive the phone call? Im sort of worried that I'll be at work when they call

I was at work, seeing my last patient of the day! I got the call around 520 pm. But I believe the call you back if you don't answer (from what other people have said).

I got a call last night while I was at the movies (Damn you Hunger Games!). My interviewer left me a message (5:50pm pacific time) saying she would call me back another time..... I'm assuming it's good news!? Do they reject over the phone as well?!

Do you honestly think the excoms have enough time to call the over 7000 people who applied to tell them they are rejected?

If you get rejected, it's an automated email, if you are still undecided you get a SUC email, if you get accepted you get a phone call and email later.

So congrats!

I'm thinking that is probably good news! When my interviewer called me on Friday he said our portal would be updated on Monday. Mine has no indication that i was offered an acceptance. I am assuming the others who have reported receiving an acceptance call also don't see a change to their portal? I need to see it confirmed that i was accepted on my portal otherwise i'll have this nagging thought that someone played a cruel joke on me!

That's a fair point, this whole process has limited my ability to think rationally! This is so exciting!!!! 🙂

Just received second SUC email. It's gonna be a long wait till March

doesn't the S stand for "still?

it's like saying ATM machine or PIN number... literally the worst 😛
True. However, I already SUC(ked) 2 weeks ago, so now I "still" SUC(k). It's grammatically incorrect but emphasizes my frustration with the process.
