2015-2016 University of Washington Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I just wanted to chime in on this conversation...I too received a SUC in Dec for the Spokane cohort and then the email stating SOM's intention to update the status of applicants. As a SUC applicant I expect to receive an update before 22 Jan whether it is reaffirming I am SUC or updating me with a different status. From what I have read, every time an EXCOM meeting is held statuses will be updated...up until the last meeting in March then final decisions will be made.
Obviously an applicant is SUC for a wide variety of reasons...one reason could be is that they are trying to have a better group with which to compare unique applicants.
So I am excited about the status update in the next two weeks!
Good luck to everyone!
I interviewed in early Oct. I got 2 SUC emails, one in Oct, and another in Nov. I haven't heard anything since the update about the Spokane cohort interviews. I find it strange that the EXCOM wouldn't have met from Nov. until now. Hence, I'm not sure we get updated every time they meet.

Thanks for the info! Then quite possibly they only update you if your status changes? This process of waiting is difficult.

If they don't update with every meeting, why would they bother sending SUC emails when your EXCOM member isn't actually at the meeting (not that we would know)? That's the only reason I'm thinking they haven't had meetings since 12/9 ish for Seattle, otherwise we would have heard right?

Could anyone who interviewed this cycle tell me what time the interview day ends? Trying to book return flights for the same day... Thank you!!!!

It really depends on your interview time (assigned day of in the packet). I believe your interview can be as early as 10/11 A.M. (Don't remember which one) and as late as 3/4P.M. (this being your last time). You are allowed to leave afterwards. To be safe you can assume you're is the very last one, but maybe you can request an earlier time.

If you have a morning interview you should be out by 1pm. If you have an afternoon interview you should be out by an hour after your interview time.

If you interview in Seattle, there are 8am interviews for some applicants

You know, I wanted a unique colored suit for this reason (at least navy!) and it was not in my price range in any brand I wouldn't have to totally reconstruct (for another $300) with a tailor. I was pretty bummed!
Don't do it! But I will say the navy suits are pretty suave 😍

So I am glad I am not the only one that got an SUC email for the Spokane cohort. I was under the impression that the advantage to applying to the satellite sites is that they tell you right away, they basically don't have an SUC list... I called to see what was up because of this understanding and they told me they hadn't had a chance to look over my application and that I was right, there is no SUC list for Spokane... I'm totally spooked now...

Don't forget to account for traffic - it can get pretty bad around here in the afternoon to evening.

And traffic in the morning! I had to add 20 minutes to my projected travel time and I was just down the street.

My interview was at 4 and I called an uber to leave right around 5.

Does anyone know if there is a UWSOM c/o 2020 yet? whether it's on SDN or FB group?

I'd like to start networking with classmates and making sure we all have our shiz together for matriculation. For example, I've been looking at last year's Textbook list to start looking for good prices since I heard the textbook list will "likely" be the same. Figured it'd be a good way also to posts events or whatnot. 😵

Hi, first year UW med student here. Basically, most of us hardly ever use textbooks because...

1) When you do need them, you can access everything for free thru the library website or most of us have found copies online for free.
and
2) We don't use them for a lot of stuff. The majority of the material is written up in documents by the faculty, in powerpoints, or in videos. I know this is very different from undergrad.

I would recommend NOT buying the textbooks with the exception of a good anatomy book. That you will want. I only bought the biochemistry and genetics books because it was easier for me to understand the concepts with a hard copy but the rest of the books, when we do use them, I use online. Most of my classmates haven't spent a dime on textbooks except for an anatomy one and some not even that.

If there isn't one listed yet, I would just start your own FB group for the class. Someone did that for us last year a little bit before this time, and it's the one we all use now.

Wow I guess there really is no SUC list for Spokane.. Strange that they still haven't gone over my application either since I interviewed the first day of Spokane interviews, 12/03, and received an SUC as well. I guess we're in the same boat!

One of my friend's told me that their friend was unfortunately rejected after their interview in Spokane soon after their interview. Since there isn't an SUC, list do Spokane applicants have a waitlist??

Did your friend interview this month or in December?

And I don't think that Spokane has a waitlist... But I'm not sure. I don't even know if there will be people "WWAMI'd" to Spokane like there has been in the past...

Has anyone that interviewed in Spokane this month heard anything?

Does anyone have advice about where to stay for an interview? On a budget? Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

They do have a waitlist for Spokane, except it gets tricky here...

I dont know if kids that elect to go to Spokane and get interviewed there have the option of being waitlisted... I have yet to meet anyone in Spokane or see anything on this thread that suggests you can get waistlisted for that cohort if you are interviewing for it. If you have a preference for Seattle and interview in Seattle, you can get waitlisted and go to Spokane... I have several friends who were in this boat. Hope that makes sense, if it's confusing... well that's because its ASS BACKWARDS! I don't even know why this works this way other than the fact that maybe in previous years they were not able to fill the class in Spokane? But now i bet they have no problem.

They clearly state before you select an interview that folks that opt for the spokane site dont get compared to folks from the seattle site, but i can't image this is true if people from seattle get waitlisted for spokane, but people who interview for spokane are either rejected, accepted, or receive an SUC email until a decision is made...

Anyone know what the deal is with this? Provide some clarity maybe?

It was my impression that in years past, Spokane was really filled with people who wanted to be in Seattle, were wait listed, and accepted a spot in Spokane just to get a seat in the class. But a lot has changed. Spokane now has 60 seats, and I personally know many people who applied and would only consider a seat in Spokane. Now that they're considering applicants as cohorts at each location, it would seem to make sense that each site would have their own SUC list, accept list, etc. On the other hand, there is a firm 235 seat limit for the entire WWAMI class (that number may have changed), which would make sense that Seattle may have final say on where people go. Especially since they made every accepted student write a "I want Spokane/Seattle" essay.

All that being said, who knows for sure!? Seattle or Spokane, it's a great school. Best of luck to you all.

P.S.- @charlie517 let me know about a FB group! I've been looking for one!

Has anyone accepted before Jan 1 received the background check from AAMC/Certiphi? I contacted AAMC to double-check and make sure I hadn't lost it in my junk folder but if any of you have tried emailing them with questions you can probably guess how helpful they were...

Me: "Hey AAMC! I read through your website about this thing, but I have a specific question that isn't answered online anywhere. Can you answer my question?"
AAMC: "Hello, TinyGypsy, we would love to help you today. Here is a pasted version of the thing you already told us you read on our website. Please contact us with additional questions."
GAHHHHH

Coming from a current student, don't worry. The people that get it done before June have to pay for it to be done an extra time during fourth year since it only is good for two years. If you can, put it off as long as possible. I don't know how realistic that advise is though since I don't know the school's requirement timeline.

I JUST GOT THE CALL!!!!! OMG!!! I'M GOING TO BE A DOCTOR!!!

I am seriously freaking out right now!

Spokane interview date - 01/11 IS

CONGRATS!!!! I couldn't be more happier for you. A buddy of mine got accepted too. Hopefully they will be sending more good news to other folks soon 🙂

If you interview in Seattle, there are 8am interviews for some applicants

Yep, I've got Seattle with a morning time. Was hoping for an afternoon so I could get the tour but what can ya do? At least I'll have questions!

I felt the same way with my 8AM interview but at the end they were just like we'll save the questions for during/after the tour.

I got a call yesterday as well, Spokane here we come!!!!!!!!! So stoked!!!!! Anyone know of a facebook group for this cohort yet?
Congrats!! I don't know about a Facebook yet.. I think I will make one, at least for the Spokanites and then if someone has made one for the class as a whole then we can sign up for that one too 🙂

Congrats! Did you receive an e-mail before the call or how did it go?

I'm a little confused. I just spoke to the admissions office and they said they don't decide our sites until March. So how do people know that they are in at Spokane?

From my understanding, if you interviewed in Seattle, you can be placed in Sea or Spokane, and this is the site placement they are referring to. Some people apply directly to Spokane and they interview in Spokane/are only considered for Spokane campus.

Agreed. I think that they were referring to the fact that they won't know your site placement until March. But I know that some people interviewed in December and found out they got in during December as well.

People who interviewed in Seattle heard back? At least on this forum it seems like reported acceptances were from late Nov interviewees or Spokane specific interviewees. I haven't even gotten a SUC which I would gladly take over nothing at this point.

Some Seattle people have heard back. Some received SUCs, then heard back.

Have Idaho WWAMI students heard back about the February interview date yet? I am still waiting.

Hm, it doesn't bode well that it's been nearly 2 months with silence then haha. I thought everyone got SUCs at meetings?

That was the way of things for a while there but it seems to have stopped in November and never consistently picked back up again.

No applicants for SEATTLE that interviewed in Seattle in December have heard back. Those who interviewed in Seattle any time before December have heard something and everyone who has interviewed outside of Seattle has gotten some sort of feedback within a week. Those of us who interviewed in Seattle should be hearing some sort of an update by this Friday, January 22nd according to that email sent out a few weeks, ago. (EEEEEEEEEK)

Hi folks!

I'm landing in SeaTac around 2PM today (interviewing tomorrow). If anyone wants to share an Uber from airport to hotel, please let me know! I don't mind waiting a bit for you. 🙂

I wonder what format our update will be in. If it's just another SUC, I will be fairly disappointed... waiting around after an early October interview is killing me.
