2015-2016 University of Wisconsin Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
for those who were accepted - how long after receiving the phone call did it take to get your acceptance package in the mail?

I got the call Nov. 10th and just received my letter in the mail today, Nov. 21st 🙂 It feels so official seeing the acceptance on UWSMPH letterhead haha

Does anyone know how post interview rejections/waitlists are sent out?

What are the post interview acceptance rates here for oos?

Interviewed on Friday and found it to be my most difficult interview of the four that I have had. My interviewer was very friendly but thought she asked some tough questions that I definitely wasn't prepared for. Worst part is waiting to hear back after a poor interview 🙁

Don't dwell on how you perceived the interview to have gone! I was accepted at a school where I thought I interviewed poorly, and rejected at another school where I thought I nailed it. We are often poor judges of our own performance!

Well, so much for having hope with UW. Got the ax this morning, on my birthday of all days haha. It was quite sharp. OOS, complete 9/18, ~69 LizzyM. Best of luck to the rest of you, seems like an amazing school!

I'm a late OOS applicant who was rejected pre-interview this morn'
Sending all the good vibes to those who are still waiting for truth! GET ITTTTT
I am sorry to hear. Would you mind my asking when you were complete at UW?

What are the post interview acceptance rates here for oos?
Roughly 50-60%; there's data posted somewhere here or on last years' thread for approximate numbers. UWSMPH also published last year's data on their website

Anyone know if they're receptive to update letters? Have been complete since ~8/20 and its been silence ever since...

UWSMPH unfortunately does not accept updates in any form, except during your faculty interview where they ask if there is anything you would like to add to your application before it is sent for final review.

Anything that out of staters should know for touristy type things and restaurants? I know I should probably try the cheese but not sure if there is anything else worth checking out in madison. Thanks!

Anyone have any info on the performance of UWSMPH students when it comes to matching to some of the most competitive residency programs in the country? How do they compare to students from some of the top, top medical schools like Harvard, Johns Hopkins, UPenn, UCSF?

I am talking about residency programs like orthopedic surgery at Harvard, radiology at Stanford, etc.

Starting to gather information so that I can decide in the upcoming months if paying an additional $25,000 a year in tuition at a top school is going to be worth it when it comes to increasing my chances to match at competitive residency programs (the other option is to attend UWSMPH, which is very high on my list by the way).

Do you still have your folder from your interview day? If they were the same as last year, it should contain a match list.

Here are the match results from the past 5 years:

Hope that helps!

Too add to @Glandzburg we've had an amazing match list! From what I know, we've had students match into a ton of top 5 programs across all specialties. The ones I know for this most recent class is that we had folks who matched into into the #1/other top programs for Derm (NYU), Anesthesiology, Ophthalmology (Bascom Palmer), Peds (Children's Hospital Philly), Family Medicine (Ventura), Emergency Med (Cincinnati).. there's definitely more, but I don't know much about orthopedics, ENT, etc (but schools like UCSF and stanford and mayo sound solid to me).

The more relevant fact is that basically every student matched into one of their top 3 choices for a residency program, from what we've been told. Ultimately, match lists mean nothing, and where you decide to go for med school will not stop you from matching into a top program if that's what you want to do. If someone's #1 for residency of X specialty is some rural town for personal preference despite them having the scores to do a "more competitive program," it doesn't reflect on the school's ability to prepare students.

That being said, I think our school does a great job advising and helping students come match time to optimize their chances of getting into the programs they want. 😉

For what it's worth, you should be able to match into any program from UWSMPH. You will have to do very well at ANY medical school to match into these top programs. Consider that the $100,000 tuition difference will turn into $200,000 - $300,000 due to compounding interest by the time you pay off your loans.

And as @Jennyfishy alluded to, trying to interpret match lists is a fruitless effort for most people that don't have a lot of experience doing so.

Rejected post-secondary. OOS. Complete 09/28. Totally bummed about this one.

Oh, uh... cancel this. My II was at MCW, not UW. My bad.

Think Interviewees from November 17th will hear back the 11th, or the 18th?

Anyone who interviewed on the 4th of November heard back yet?

Nvm, I'm dumb on Monday AM 😕

To actually add something constructive to this thread, I really enjoyed my interview at UWSMPH last week. Laid back and low key, as advertised. They're very friendly and want you to do well. Fingers crossed to hear good news!

mr.mkitty, am I interpreting your question correctly when caused by it to assume that, having also been interviewed at UWSMPH on the week that began with 11/15 (myself on the 20th), you've been told that we're likely to have word this week?! My interviewer told me I might hear in three weeks, which would corroborate that assumption--but I didn't, unfortunately, have the presence of mind at the time to ask him whether he meant that this week would be the *earliest concieveable* time we might hear, or if, rather, he meant it'd be a reasonably *likely* time. Since I heard from one of the students who interviewed me that it took closer to seven weeks for her to hear, that distinction seems, for the sake of the maintenance of my sanity, to be crucial. (Perhaps it's relevant to mention in this connection that I'm a WARM applicant.)

This is my first post ever, by the way--so hi, everyone! Having for a great deal of time now used this forum to quell (and sometimes maybe to inadvertently increase) my MD app-related worries, I figure my time's come to try to reciprocate a bit.

I'm in love with UWSMPH's WARM program, and my interview day would've cause me to fall thus if I hadn't already. The facilities are beautiful, the curriculum meticulously designed, the academic staff brilliant, the students kind and committed and interesting, and the institution's progressive inclinations admirable and genuine. This latter point was abundantly clear during the talk I had with my faculty interviewer.

Etc. The point is that I'm on the edge of my seat to hear from this place--far, far and away my top choice--like I have not and will not ever be again w.r.t. anywhere else. Hence my abudnance of interest in the likelihood of hearing soon. Discovering that that likelihood of getting my call is slim for some time yet will permit me the leisure to do something, anything, other than obsessively check my phone and email.

But so I'm sending my best to everyone! I dearly hope to soon count anyone whose passion for this place and its ethic is similar to mine (I suspect many) among my future classmates!

We interviewed the same day! At the end of the day I remember them saying we should hear in 3-4 weeks. On one of the sheets in the folder I think it said to drop a line if we hadn't heard back within a month.

I got my response on the 16th business day after my interview. It was a Monday. Not sure if the timeline is different for WARM applicants though.

Sounds like you are pretty anxious about hearing back. I know it's hard, but just try to relax... It's not like if you don't pick up on the first ring they change your acceptance into a rejection. Make sure you know where your phone is at, but don't spend your day waiting for it to ring. That kind of suspense will paralyze you from doing anything productive! Your call will come in due time 🙂

That timeline sounds about right coming from a current M2 or M3 (the students doing the interviews right now) but luckily for you the amazing admissions staff seems to be getting more and more efficient each year. I cannot comment on the WARM timeline except that I have not noticed any big discrepancies between theirs and the regular MD committees' turnaround times. I would think that you will hear closer to 3 weeks than to 7 weeks as many students this year have been getting the calls within 2-4 weeks post-interview, but I think the overall goal of the admissions office is still a turnaround of within 4-6weeks, so don't think we forgot about you if you haven't heard 3 or 4 weeks post interview... The holidays are a hectic time for all 😉

But more importantly... if it helps you relax, just tell yourself you won't hear for 6 weeks and you will likely find yourself pleasantly surprised! Good luck :luck:

To echo some of the other comments, I interviwed on November 20th and at the end of the day, I'm pretty sure they told our group that "if you haven't heard by four weeks, you can call and ask when they will have a decision made, but they expect to have our admission decisions in three weeks"

With that being said, Friday will be three weeks, and while I'm anxiously awaiting a decision, I suspect I won't hear until next week at the earliest.

has anyone who interviewed on Nov. 13th heard anything?

Thanks to everyone for the reassurance! I'm still on the edge of my seat, but I think I have a better grip on it now. 🙂 If any WARM acceptees want to comment on turnover time, I'd (needless to say) love to hear their input, too!

A questions for current students:

I read on the interview feedback page that some classes are off campus, for instance, the anatomy class requires students to take a bus downtown. Is this true? Also, would you say that having a car is necessary?
