2015-2016 Wake Forest University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
@Pathdocmd for the prompt
"The Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) lists 15 entry-level core competencies for medical school applicants: Service Orientation, Social Skills, Cultural Competence, Teamwork, Oral Communication, Ethical Responsibility to Self and Others, Reliability and Dependability, Resilience and Adaptability, Capacity for Improvement, Critical Thinking, Quantitative Reasoning, Scientific Inquiry, Written Communication, Living Systems, and Human Behavior. (See AAMC webpage for full definitions using hyperlink below).

Please pick ONE of the competencies and describe how your background and experiences highlights the competency and prepares you for medical school. Do not duplicate information provided elsewhere in the secondary application or in your AMCAS personal statement (400 words or less)."

my question might sound dumb, but does that mean we can't talk about the experiences that we discussed in our secondary/ps?
or just that we can't copy/paste?

Do not copy and paste or rehash info that is clearly stated elsewhere. Use it to elaborate on an experience or add information that changed since you submitted the AMCAS application.

and for the question
"Describe any connection you have to Wake Forest School of Medicine, Wake Forest University, Winston-Salem, or North Carolina (200 words or less)."
even if we have no connections, can we still discuss why we want to attend Wake Forest?

If you want, but be specific.

Can anyone speak to the social environment at Wake? For example, if I mention LGBT issues in my secondary will my application be dead on arrival?

Thank you in advance for the insight.

I am also invested in this answer.

To Pathdocmd:

On the Wake Forest admissions page the instructions ask for at least one letter from a science faculty member, but there is no mention of a required non science writer. After reviewing the secondary it states "AMCAS will receive two evaluations, one from science and one from non-science".

Should I update my AMCAS to send the non-science letter in or will I be alright without a non-science letter? Thanks in advance.

Wake Forest cultivates a very progressive and inclusive environment. Mentioning LGBT issues in your secondary will in no way negatively impact your application. If it is something you are strongly passionate about, and you think talking about them provides interesting insight into who you are as a person, then I would definitely recommend talking about it in your essays.

Thank you! That is good to know.
Are you a student?

I agree, writing about LGBT issues will have no negative impact. I haven't seen any negative impact on an application and the COA would not tolerate it.

This is very encouraging. Thank you so much!

I was already really excited about Wake Forest, and hearing this really means a lot.

Has anyone submitted the secondary and NOT gotten a confirmation that my secondary is received and/or application is complete? I submitted mine last Saturday and have heard nothing.

If you check the application status link they sent you before the secondary, it will be updated to reflect your current status.

anyone know how many secondaries are sent compared to applicants?

Omg just realized we only have to do 2 of the required essays by reading this thread. Thank you SDN!!!! I was having a tough time with the core competency one. I'm guessing that's the one most people are skipping?

I believe Pathdocmd said that most people do all three, but you may choose to do whatever you like:
If you only want to answer 2, then just answer 2. Most do all 3, but it doesn't give you an advantage over those who answer 2.

Do I have to answer this question if I am a re-applicant in general, but have never applied to Wake Forest? Do they know I'm a re-applicant to other medical schools?

2. If you are a re-applicant, please describe if you have made any significant changes or improvements from your previous application (200 words or less)

I skipped the competency one because I felt my other two essays made up several of the competencies listed.

Yeah, I read your earlier posts and realized my situation is similar, so I don't think I'll be doing #3.

I don't know the answer for sure but I believe they will know you are a reapplicant to other schools. I would answer that question because I assume you've made some changes and it would be good to show those off.

I assumed the question meant if I were a reapplicant to their school because of this post from the AAMC https://www.aamc.org/students/applying/amcas/faqs/301606/amiareapplicanttoallschools.html implying that I should not consider myself a reapplicant if I didn't apply previously.

I feel like I already touched on 3 of the core competencies in my diversity and challenge essay, so I'm a little lost as to whether it would be worth it to write another essay and try to write it about a different competency.

complete status today! submitted 7/17

where do you find the complete status? when I log onto the secondary all I see is my submitted secondary - do you get an email regarding complete?

Nope--I had a similar situation, as did others on this thread. I skipped the competencies question.

Is anyone having trouble accessing the status page..? I get an "unable to access the network" page every time I try.

I just checked its up, and I am completed.

Of course it is worth it, you will look that much better. I am in the same situation & I am a little tired of writing but on we go...

Any idea on what the screen is based on? Numbers or more?
I emailed asking about secondary and it just take them time. you should get one soon!

We receive applications from AMCAS in waves at once received it takes approximately two weeks to format, download and process the applications. The first download that we received was on July 1st and we just received our second. I would assume based on your verification date that you will be in a download and processed towards the end of the month.

Sincerely,

Ashley Kelley

When did you get verified?

I designated Wake Forest on my primary, and was verified on July 13th. I haven't received any correspondence from them yet, not even an acknowledgement of receipt of my application or a link to my status. Nothing at all. I also applied to Wake last year. Should I be worried or send an email to the admissions committee?

Wake Forest was designated on my primary as well, which was verified June 4th and I have yet to receive acknowledgement either...
