2016-2017 Pennsylvania State University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Do you guys know how long after the interview can you hear back the result from them?

Anyone know the match statistics of Penn State College of Medicine? I only see their match list but no stats/%s.

Google penn state college of medicine match list. All the previous years will show up. The match lists are strong

Yeah, I already see that. I was just wondering the actual stats and percentages of students matching.

Are people invited for interviews after being put on a pre-II hold? I've been on hold since October.

Well, I see 143 names from the match list 2016. Given that the MD class is in the range of 144 (entering class 2016, including the MD/PhD students, pulled from their website) and 149 (entering class 2015), I would say the percentage of students matching is in the high 90's and almost everyone seems to match somewhere.
Now, are they all matching at their first choice residency? that would be a different question... However, based the list, I think they are doing very well.

Just got the pre-II "on hold" e-mail- I see that quite a few people have received this as well, and I am inclined to think that it is just a nice way to say "you can anticipate a rejection", however I would love to hear some success stories if anybody knows of someone who received an II after being on hold! Wanting to be optimistic 🙂

Oh, I would imagine that it is an extremely high percentage, if not 100%. You don't have to worry that. Penn state is a very reputable school

Awesome. I was thinking along those same lines. Hyped to be going here 🙂 (well as of now, very high chance ill be at penn state)..

Yeah, I did those rough calculations too. High 90s. There are 143 names in the class of 2016, but the "entering class 2016" would end up being MD Class of 2020. Knowing that its in high 90s, between 96-99, I am content and happy!

Some one did a rough tally of people who received an II after a pre-II hold a couple of year/s ago and it ended up being around 10% that reported on SDN to have received one, so maybe at most 20% irl?

Has anyone received the Certiphi background check email yet? I was accepted in January, but did not receive a Certiphi email yet.

Does anyone know how many people are there at each interview session?

There were about 8-10 people there the day that I interviewed. It seemed like that was the normal amount.

I feel like there were ~15 people the day I interviewed.
Let's say there are abt 10 people a day, so around 5 people in the morning session and 5 people in the afternoon session, correct? Or you mean 10 people at each session, so ~20 people a day?

The former. ~7 in the morning and another 7 in the afternoon.

EDIT: But the groups will end up eating lunch and touring the school together. It's just that the morning group gets there earlier and starts off with the interview.

I was accepted back in October and I only got the background check stuff 1-2 weeks ago...

^^ I agree with that.
For my interview late October, it was ~8 in the morning and ~7 afternoon.

Hey guys just wanted to stop in this thread again, I was accepted to penn state earlier this cycle and if anybody has any questions about the interview or my app please feel free to PM me! I'm hoping I can help some other qualified candidates get an acceptance here

Are they still interviewing? I was put on hold earlier and just wondering if theres still a chance

are the adcom for pre-II and adcom for post-II the same or different?

Not sure what you're asking, but the admissions committee is the same for the whole cycle...
I mean the people who read and evaluate the app...
Is there any ways that the people who are assigned to review your app to decide whether or not to give you an II different from those who review your app after the interview to decide whether or not to accept you?

I'm not part of the Hershey adcom, but I'm fairly familiar with their processes. I believe that the people looking at your file pre-II are virtually all members of the admissions department, whereas post-II those people break up into smaller admissions groups (there are six I think) with your interviewers to go over your file and interviews. Then, after you're accepted to PSUCOM, if you're considered for the UP program we have a totally different group of people making those decisions up here.

Can you please give a rough estimate of how many students get taken off the post-interview hold list and offered an acceptance? I haven't seen anyone on this forum receiving a post-interview rejection. Is the hold an implied rejection?

Just got an email about Second Look Day (Sat., April 1). It says to RSVP on the portal, but I can't find it?? >__< Does anyone know where to access the RSVP?
check your portal now. I got the email as well this morning, but did not get the second look tab until just now.

Do most people attend the second look day? I will be away at a conference on the other side of the country at the time and can't go...

At least it's not just me then haha. To quote Tom Petty, the waiting is the hardest part.

Judging by others who have posted here it looks like it takes about 2 months to get a decision. I'm 12/16 and still waiting...
