2016-2017 Stony Brook University Application Thread

Does anyone know by when most seats fill up? Are December interviewees essentially fighting for waitlist spots?

Definitely not. They interview until mid-March and offer acceptances throughout the interview season. I would say if you interview towards the end of Feb/early March then maybe.

Secondary complete in July and still no II... SBU undergrad and international... 72 LizzyM... should I give up hope? 🙁
It really is my top choice school 🙁

Anyone know the best way to get to the school from manhattan?

There's an LIRR stop right at the school so you can take that from Penn (or E to Jamaica then LIRR from there for a slightly cheaper ride). It's ~ 2 hours probably so bring a book

Is the "Stony Brook" stop close to Admissions, or would I have a significant amount of walking?

Yup there are on campus busses/shuttles. The med school buildings are across campus from the train station... you may want to ask admissions what that schedule is? Good luck!

Rejected, complete early August

@ready2go2 I highly suggest you take a cab. Yes, the Outer Loop bus does pick you up right outside the Stony Brook train station and drops you off at the Life Sciences stop, but the ramp that connects west campus to the hospital was recently knocked down for rebuilding (it was falling apart anyway). If you really wanted to save a bit of money, then I guess you can walk under the ramp, straight to the loading docks, take the elevators up one flight to floor 2, then follow the instructions admissions sent you (up two escalators and past the Health Science Library).

Does anyone know the cheapest way to get to Stony Brook from the west coast? I have been looking at flights, and it looks like flying in to JFK is better than ISP, but how do you get to Stony Brook from JFK? Is it worth it just to fly in to ISP?

Not sure about which airport but from JFK take the AirTrain to Jamaica station and then the LIRR to Stony Brook- brings you right to campus. See earlier posts on the best way to get to admissions from the train station 🙂 (either cab or free shuttle or walking if you're up for it)

when you guys got an II and emailed to schedule an interview, how early was the earliest appointment you could book?
thank you

Any recent II here? If so can you guys post when you got the II and complete date? The wait of the cycle is starting to claw away at my sanity...

Interviewed in September and still haven't heard... it's been 8 weeks 🙁

Same here. At this point, I'm inclined to believe that I'm getting a waitlist/rejection. 🙁

I got an II on Monday, 11/7! OOS, LizzyM ~76, complete 8/4. The earliest date I could schedule was Jan 5th :/

Rejected today 🙁
Complete 8/2 IS

O no 🙁 so sorry to hear. But cheer up! Ever since stony brook received a massive amount of $$$ a few years ago, their applicant stats skyrocketed to LizzyM 72+. It's the most competitive SUNY in regards to stats.

Why does this school have such a low post-interview OOS matriculation rate? According to MSAR, last year 2500 OOS applicants applied, 236 got interviews, and 32 matriculated? According to a poster here and US News, they take around 50-60% of applicants after an interview (I'm assuming that % is the average of IS and OOS applicants). This MSAR number just makes no sense

Do they just take few OOS students after an interview? Or do OOS students who get acceptances here not choose to matriculate for some reason?

Stony Brook is a SUNY school (State univ. of NY) so its majority IS not OOS

Just received a II, I applied in my senior year, does that mean I should answer the 2nd part of the first essay question?

Essay question? There are no essays after you get an interview... 😵

they only send the essays to people who they want to accept. The rest of the people who interview without essay is interviewing for the waitlist.

Waitlisted, interviewed mid september. I'll take it! :X

Does anyone who interviewed here already or current students have tips for the interview? Specifically, why Stony Brook outside of the generic answer to "why X med school"?

Waitlisted. This is my first choice. I can't stop crying.

Also waitlisted today after interviewing the end of October. OOS
