2016-2017 University of Iowa (Carver) Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I interviewed mid September and still haven't heard anything. Perhaps I'm destined for the final pool. Or rejection. Woke up to a rejection today from another school so I was hoping for some love from Iowa....

+1 . Crossing my fingers for a final pool instead! Are you IS or OOS?

OMG ACCEPTED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As a third-time reapplicant, this is surreal. Going through cycles with long, discouraging droughts of correspondence can take a toll, but I encourage you all to keep your chins up. And to everyone who's still waiting to hear back, I wish the very best outcome.
Gingy congratulations!!! Made me so happy to see this! :soexcited:

I've been lurking on this site for like 2 years, and just today decided to make an account because I can't handle the suspense anymore! I interviewed in mid October and have been refreshing my email every Tuesday since.

Does anyone know how they review our files after the interview? I've searched on here a lot and haven't found anything definitive, and probably never will. I just want to throw this out there I suppose... My thought was that once you interview, they put you on some sort of ranked list where people in the highest tier have the most to offer based on their primary (highest stats, best EC's, URM status), and people with less impressive applications go in lower tiers. I imagined that when the adcom meets they start at the top tier and move downward making decisions whether to offer you admission or put you in the final pool. And within each tier, I assumed that you are closer to the top the earlier you interview.

Any input on whether or not that all sounds plausible?

I know what you mean! I interviewed in the beginning of October and still haven't heard back, sigh.
I think what you're saying makes sense but I also have a few friends who interviewed even before me, were IS, and had really good stats and they haven't heard back either, so I don't even know anymore.
P.S. I made my account for pretty much the same reason that you did haha

YES! I am thinking that my file has already been reviewed and decided on to enter the final pool. Idk if that is how it works, but I have seen people who have similar or lower stats than me who interview near my date who have gotten accepted already. I don't have stellar EC's and I don't feel like I was amazing at my interview so it makes me wonder if that put me in final pool.

I guess my question is whether or not they put people into final pool during rolling admissions, or do you think they just get to a few of the top files each meeting and admit them on a rolling basis? Because one would think that if you are at the top of the pile for consideration, you would have good enough qualifications that they would want to offer you admittance.

I think my nerves are talking now lol.

Did you interview Oct. 12th?

My Secondary and all letters of rec were marked complete on August 15th, but I have yet to hear back with either an interview or rejection. Has anyone else experienced this type of slow correspondence, whether it's with Iowa or anywhere else? (OOS).

I have only heard back about an interview from Iowa and one other school. This past Monday I got a rejection from one school but have had dead silence from the other 6 I applied to. I am thinking now I won't hear back until after the new year because of the holidays and winter break.

This is something virtually all applicants experience with many schools every single cycle.

II oos...will likelybe turning down since I've been accepted into one of my state schools.

Submitted secondary 10/09
Complete 10/10

Anyone have any idea when financial aid packages would start to be offered? I can't remember what they said at interview day, but for some reason January is in my head..

i submitted my secondary on 10/31 and it says complete on my app portal but i never got a formal completion email from them, is this normal?

You could receive merit scholarships any time after your acceptance.

You can submit your FAFSA now for Iowa and then an aid package with grants would be sent out after that. I can only reference that I did the FAFSA in early February last year and then received my aid information in early March. I don't know if a January 1 FAFSA would merit earlier aid information.

You can now submit fafsa starting in October. During my interview in early November they told us to fill the fafsa out as soon as we got home.

That's how it is for current students as well. Thanks for the heads up.

I filed FAFSA with Iowa in November so that's complete. Just haven't heard anything since the acceptance in October. Maybe merit isn't released until January 1st?

I guess my next question is: Has anyone heard about merit aid yet?

from previous years, anyone knows what is Iowa's merit scholarship? how many people got it and how much?

It varies, because there are a variety of different scholarships. I am not sure on the details but I believe there is money given to low-SES students, URM students, students with significant achievements, etc. There is also grant money given out by the school based on need. I think these whole packages of "free money" can range from $0 to full-tuition.

There are different ones and they keep them on the down low it would seem. I know they range from smaller amounts to full tuition. I wasn't notified of mine until April, but my previous financial aid included a large need based grant that was replaced by scholarship.

Greetings all, does anyone know how much the interview is weighted in the decision process? This is my first closed file interview, I was wondering how much weight the admissions committee attributes to the interview.

It serves as one of five selection factors, which are weighted equally and each scored out of 6. The selection factors combine to create a composite score, allowing applicants to be ranked. This is my understanding based on discussion with an adcom member during an application review last spring. Your score on the interview is thus very important and shouldn't be underestimated.

What are the other 4 selection factors?

I don't know specifically, as our discussion focused on the interview (my weakness last cycle). We discussed several areas of the application (MCAT, GPA, personal statement, volunteer/clinical activities), but they never specified the other selection factors. I'd guess the others somehow encompass stats, volunteering, clinical exposure, personal statement/motivations for pursuing medicine, etc.

Literally crying, first II of the season!!!:soexcited::banana:

Did you submit a letter of interest as an application update on your online portal?

Can anyone with more knowledge comment about the final pool?

Are all January interviewees destined for the final pool?
