2016-2017 University of Miami (Miller) Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I want to upload my photo but I do not see any option on the application for me to do this. I tried going to the home page but it only asks me for my AMCAS ID and birthday. Anyone know how to fix this issue?

"All applicants who complete the secondary application must also provide a recent photograph (passport sized, 2” x 3”) of themselves. You will receive instructions on how to submit the Secondary/Supplemental Application and a request for you to send a digital photograph to the Admissions Office e-mail address . Permanent residents of the United States must provide a copy of their alien registration receipt (green) card. A non-refundable application fee of $90 is charged to all applicants."

^^^^ There's a link on the secondary app. page to upload a photo of yourself.

I understand that the instructions say that, but when I am on the secondary application I cannot find a link anywhere. Even when I am about to submit the application, it prompts me to pay for it without ever submitting a photo. It would be extremely helpful if anyone can give me details on exactly where on the application the photo upload should be.

Got the secondary today, but I can't load the link. I have tried firefox, IE and chrome. Anyone else having trouble? Maybe the website is just down.

Having the same issue, was able to successfully open the secondary yesterday though.

Sorry, I wasn't being clear. I submitted yesterday.
You pay the $90 and then you "are submitted".
You go back to the original link that prompted you to do the secondary, and you re-enter AMCAS ID and DOB. From there, it'll take you back to a page where you can look at your essays and secondary etc, and it'll say "APPLICATION INCOMPLETE" and it will tell you to upload a photo, and you'll be able to "choose file" and "upload photo" straight to that page.

Long story short, pay the $90, log back in, and you'll see where it tells you to upload the headshot.

I hope that helps you!

I used the chat thing on the site and was told that these errors are due to a huge number of people trying to log in at once. You would think their server would have the bandwidth for this lol.

Thank you very much! Now if only I could get into the application... It seems to have been down all day

Anyone know where to submit a copy of your green card? Or do they just email you to ask for it at some point? Just submitted everything else, status online shows Complete and application is under review.

Anyone receive the "you have already uploaded a picture" message without ever submitting a picture?

Yup! I got that! I emailed them a picture for the application. Put your AMCAS ID and "Application Photograph" in the subject title.

Anyone know how long the process takes from secondary submission to possible interview invite?

I submitted my secondary on July 14th and received an interview invite on July 30th. I'll be starting as an MD candidate this fall. Feel free to ask me any questions 🙂

For the listing sections, what are y'all doing about activities that fit into both clinical experience and volunteering? Putting it under both questions or just picking one?

I put some into both! Not sure if that's annoying for whoever reads it but oh well

for the extracurriculars and shadowing chronological descriptions, are you guys elaborating a lot? I'm kinda using bullets for each time span and describing within parentheses

Is it okay to report a 100 level Econ course under behavioral science? According to AMCAS, Econ is behavioral science, but not sure if Miami counts it as well.

Also, the school says anything in the "Humanities" is behavioral science... Well I majored in Chinese and all of my courses are in the College of Humanities. Would those courses (e.g. Chinese Culture) count as behavioral science?

I did the exact same thing. Didn't write too much because a lot of it is already in my primary.

part of me genuinely thinks they aren't looking at the primary as much because they asked so many redundant questions in the secondary so personally I tried to be descriptive just in a different way than I did on the 1°. but for the chronological lists I did bullet points and brief brief description. just my $0.02

I'm also thinking they don't really look at the primary too much which is why I want to be thorough but not repetitive. I'm not sure if I should try to fill the character limit or if in this case, less is more

As you can see, GPA, MCAT, and undergrad "prestige" are only 120/300 points. Your experiences, LORs, overcoming adversity, etc. are actually given more weight at 180/300 points! So don't skimp on elaborating about those experiences 😉

Hey, any idea how they evaluate academic institution quality points? how does GPA translate to points?

-also, is there some sort of minimum value of points to obtain II?

Did you give dates and number of hours worked for each activity in the chronological lists?

Hey guys, in the first essay question it says to "Briefly describe the one clinical experience you have had that has most significantly influenced your decision to study medicine. Do not replicate your AMCAS personal statement". I get that I shouldn't copy and paste from my personal statement, but if my most significant clinical experience (in terms of me deciding I wanted to be a doctor) is the one I wrote about in my personal statement...can I still write about the same experience?

Yeah, I did that. Just try to put a different spin on it.

This is by far my elast favorite secondary question. Between my PS and my Most Meaningful, this has already been covered.

originally yes,
e.g. shadowing; I put the date and hour and the procedures I observed
repeated this for every single day I shadowed other the last 3 years and needless to say it was over 500 words.

revised it to put start stop dates (July 2013 - present)
and then a description and list of procedures with each physician I shadowed. looked up "chronological lists" all over the place and everything I saw / everyone I talked to said a start and stop date. and then that's why they ask for the description as well. they obviously have my hours from 1° application.

still convinced they barely look at that though, besides PS maybe...

Where do they ask for the description? The question only says to provide a chronological list of dates for the activities ..
I don't think it's necessary to give the description of each of the activities it would be impossible to fit especially if you have several Activities and tried to give a decent description. They would have said to describe if they wanted to see that . The start and stop dates along with the hours should be quite sufficient . If they want to see the description they can always look at the primary.

Secondary received! I'm going to go get a pic taken today so I can go ahead and submit.

I have no idea TBH. They obviously have their own internal algorithm that is unknown to me.

Keep in mind that this makes up a smaller portion of your overall app. Your experiences, LORs, overcoming adversity, etc. are actually given more weight at 180/300 points. Bust your butt on your responses and be confident in your profile.

I don't have any formal research experience. How do you think I should address this?

this was actually mentioned in the thread earlier on from one of the matriculates from a previous year. when you open open that link they INITIALLY send with the secondary invite (congratulations blah blah with a U and a stethoscope), they talk about what they want written. where they mention "chronological list", they mention when asked for the chronological lists, please mention start and stop dates with a brief description. go back and look at it and let me know if you have any questions. this is also why I didn't go date by date.

Okay this secondary is seriously enormous... I have been working on it forever and am only half way done! I could have done at least two other schools in this time frame lol.

Status change today

"Your Application has been reviewed by the Admissions Committee at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. Applicants will be invited to interview based upon their point total from the Committee review. Applications that have been reviewed and scored by the Committee will be considered for interviews during the entire interview cycle (September - April)."

I just put clinical volunteering under "Clinical Experience/Shadowing" and put non-clinical volunteer stuff in "community service/volunteering", since my clinical experience list was a little short compared to the volunteer one.

With that said, Miami's secondary is a prime example of the saying "more than one way to skin a cat". There's definitely some ambiguity in the way they ask the questions and theres totally more than one correct way to write the app.

Also, Remember that UM wants start/stop dates and a short description for all the chronological list questions. I didnt read the instruction sheet carefully, submitted without any descriptions, and then had to send them the "I messed up" email of shame lol.

Oh I seem to have totally missed this. Thanks for pointing out!

I can't believe I did the same thing, had not seen this post before. I submitted with just start and stop dates and total hours for the chronological list . Should I send them an email with the descriptions in the body of the mail? Hope this does not hurt my chances!

I just shot them a short, courteous email apologizing and then provided the update in the email body.

If you ever have questions I'd say it's always best to call the admissions office and just ask. They're very understanding and its a lot faster/clearer than emailing them.

+1

Also...whever said it was a good idea to copy and paste from amcas...DONT do that lol.

Nothing makes you look lazier/less interested in the school.

If your struggling with what to write, consider taking a different tack on something you already wrote about. You can also expand on one aspect of a broader topic you already addressed. Or take some time to write about how a given experience relates to UMs mission and why you want to go here specifically.

I didn't submit with descriptions...didn't send an update with descriptions...I'm now an MS-2. YMMV

Will do , thank you so much !

Thoughts on the optional essays? How significant should your experiences be to talk about them? For example, I lived half my life abroad, can I list that under "Travel experience" and talk about it a little? If the hobbies essay is only ~100 words, is it worth writing?

Also, for those interested in MD/MPH, where did you mention that? I might be an idiot but I don't see anywhere asking about it...

When did you submit?

Are people actually using 500 words on all of these prompts? I'm about to tackle this one and feel seriously overwhelmed
