2016-2017 University of Pennsylvania (Perelman) Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Did you like WashU better? (Are we allowed to discuss such a thing in Penn's hallowed grounds?)

But for real I am not thinking about which girl is the cutest until I know if they like me back and how much they cost.

I don't want to derail the thread, and I know it was said entirely in jest - but I can't help but point out that your analogy is extremely problematic from an egalitarian perspective, particularly the last bit...

Silver lining - I can take your WashU spot if you get in here.

Hey I'm accepted at WashU too 🙂 Agree with efle, I have to wait to see how finances play out. I really did love Penn though, the first impression they gave off was fantastic.

Does it help from an egalitarian perspective if I say any that want to pay for my dinner instead of the traditional arrangement wins my heart ? I'm just cheap not sexist !

The administration just sent out an email to current students saying that decisions will be released shortly, so hopefully they will be released some time next week.

THANK YOU for taking the time to tell us that. I really appreciate it, makes the waiting a little bit easier to have some piece of information about when we will hear back.

No problem. Just digging through my email now, it looks like last year they sent us the email saying decisions would be ready soon on 2/26 and then sent us an email with the list of accepted applicants on 3/9.

Thanks so much for the info! Do you remember if it was just an email decision, email to check portal, phone call, etc?

I was expecting next week, but that sounds to me like it could be this week ... :/
Did you read his second post (below)? We'll likely still hear next week

When I was applying they sent out an email to check the portal. I'm not sure what they did last year/are doing this year, but I imagine it will be the same.

I guess that lets them send everyone the same email all at once, makes sense

725, including 102 MD/PhDs, were interviewed

Wow! Quite a drop from 880 in both of the last two years. I wonder what prompted the change?

Post-II admit rate now looking to be 34% !

Wait are you including the 102 from MD/PhD? How many people are accepted?

I forgot to mention, there were post-baccs that interviewed very recently, and we never got an interview roster for that. So I couldn't include them when I added up all the rosters together. Idk how many there were (maybe like 20-25 from the size of the crowd I saw)

879 for 2014/2015 (cf MSAR)
797 for 2015/2016 (per interview day sheet) -82 from previous year
725 for 2016/2017 so -72 from previous year

Looks more like carefully planned incremental decreases. One interesting fact is that it seems that they're still interviewing the same number of applicants for MD/PhD roughly speaking.

Nevermind the MSAR's weird naming system for its versions messed me up, it looks like it is 880 2 and 3 years ago, not 1 and 2 years ago.

Maybe next year it will fall even further down!

MSAR does not have the complete data for 2015/2016. That's why it doesn't show the average new MCAT of admitted students but only the range of MCATs for applicants. It was released before those numbers became available.

I hate them for calling it the "2017 edition" when it has data from the 2014-2015 cycle, ffs

So we are probably looking at ~180-190 initial acceptances for MD only.

I still think they'd keep it similar to ~230-240. It wouldn't make sense for them to proportionally lower number of offers, unless they plan to actually take people off the waitlist like peers at UCSF/Yale/Columbia. Either way, I don't think deliberately lowering numbers of interviewees means they have to lower initial offers.

Same I think it's much higher acceptance than 180-190 even md only. Class size is 156 according to msar, so even if we subtract the 20ish mstp the yield rate is like 75%ish, which is ridiculously high even for penn

I think he's talking about intial acceptances, as in not counting people accepted off the waitlist? But if you look in the MSAR at the number taken from waitlist in 2014-2015 it is very small. Almost all accepts will be in the big wave next week

A new Dean of Admissions was appointed during this time. I presume that explains at least some of the change. It makes tons of sense, for multiple reasons. Saves both the school and prospective students money and time to stop interviewing applicants with a low pre-interview probability of acceptance.

Anyone (inc. current students) know roughly what Penn looks for that's slightly different from its peers? I found it interesting that their secondaries asked for things like global health and other random factors like family/relatives at Penn that I didn't really see as explicitly at other top schools. Also how does their admissions committee work in terms of meeting/voting?

Well they can't weigh those factors too heavily because the only essay I wrote was the "Why Penn" one.

I think I am dying of anxiety here...

Any current students have any clue what day decisions might be released this next week?

To wear the hat all week for good luck, or not to wear the hat? What are you guys doing with your hats once you get rejected?

Here is the history of past years:

2012 - Weds March 14
2013- Weds March 13
2014- Weds March 12
2015 - Thurs March 12
2016 - Tues March 8

I think it's always been during their spring break though, which is this coming week. So probably Weds, maybe Tues maybe Thurs?

Not wearing the hat before possible acceptance. Would jinx it.

Maybe I'm crazy but I logged on to portal and it looked different the first time I did, then it changed back ...

Today seems a bit early given previous years. I was figuring probably sometime later this week...
