Anybody on here interviewing this weekend? If so, and if you'd like to meet up, send me a PM! I'm an MS1.

Anybody receive a schedule for the interview and friday info session? I'm searching through my emails and there's nothing except how to get there.

The school looks great. They showed us around the hospitals and around campus. The two hospitals they have, Parkland and Clements, look amazing.
The interviews were quite easy going and conversational. Everybody said their interviews were the same way and went well. It makes me wonder though, how do they choose who to accept if all the interviews are so casual?

+1

I was wondering the same thing. It seems like most Texas interviews are this way.

I think a lot of schools already have a good idea of who they want before interviews...if they know they want you, the interview is just to make sure you're not a sociopath or something. If the school is on the fence about you, the interview could help them swing either way...of course if they thougt they really wanted you and then you totally mess up the interview then thats bad too...
Atleast thats how i think the process works at utsw and perhaps quite a few of the texas schools...

I think UTSW is looking for students who will fit with our mission, and with the general student population here. Almost everyone here is passionate about community service and leadership.
We also have a super cohesive student body, so anyone who is perceived to be a "gunner" at their interviews probably either doesn't get in or doesn't choose to come here in the end. I haven't met any gunners yet (granted it would be hard to be a gunner when the pre-clerkship phase is a true (unranked) pass/fail. We have a super laid back class, and the class above us is the same.

But post interview acceptance rates at most schools are atrocious. 30% or less. I think you still have to blow them away at interviews.

Schools like UTMB interview close to 1000, and accept around 200. If they truly want all 1000 students, I don't think the interview is to verify sociopathic status haha. I think that the students they interview pass the screen for academics and ECs, and now they want to know if this student can function socially, not just academically. And the chance is the majority of those they interview can. So it comes down to small things that can separate those students from the rest. This is where your application matters again. Some schools don't use stats after interviews while others do. But chances are that out of the 1000 interviewing at UTMB, a good percent of them are interviewing at other schools, so I'm sure they are all pretty qualified.

post interview acceptance rate at utsw is 40%. This doesnt mean that everyone interviewing has a 40% chance of getting in once they make it to the interview stage. Some people have stellar applications and utsw is sure they want them. they just need to not mess up the interview, not necessarily kick it out of the park. these ppl essentially have close to a 100% chance of getting in if nothing horrendous happens during the interview. Some ppl are on the fence whether it's stats wise or EC/essay wise. the school interviews them anyway bc they have to fill up interview slots and hey maybe they'll kick it out of the park and convince the school to accept them. but i mean even if their interview goes just well that's probably not good enough- these ppl had less a 40% shot of getting in post interview to begin with.

I didn't say any school truly wants everyone they interview. I said they have a good idea of who they want before they interview.

EDIT: my post in reply to footballfoot explains it a bit better. Essentially, yes all ppl are qualified to a certain degree but no one can argue that every applicant who interviews is equally qualified in the eyes of the school.

.if they know they want you, the interview is just to make sure you're not a sociopath or something.

^ I was referring to this haha. The interview is a vital component, and the way you worded it made it seem like the interview was just a screen to make sure they weren't insane. But I do agree with what you said right now, that not all applicants are qualified to a certain degree.

I do stand with what I saw before...that for CERTAIN applicants the interview is just a screen...
For those with a more average applications..yes the interview can and does make a difference

What do you mean by screen? I see a screen as a quick check to see if they're crazy. But I think that schools do these in-depth interviews to get a detailed compilation of the student. If schools just screened the most qualified applicants very quickly, you would get some very smart but socially lacking individuals a lot of the times. That's why even if certain applicants are what the school thinks they want, the interview can still make or break them. There are many high stat people that get rejected from schools due to this.

So i think someone posted here earlier "oh everyone said their interview went well, how will the school pick who gets in". I was merely saying that the school already has a pretty good idea of who all they want before the interview. If you were one of the ppl that the school already knew they wanted, then the interview wouldnt really make or break you unless you did something really stupid. That's all i'm saying...that the interview matters less in the grand scheme of things (for some of the more stellar applicants) unless they do something really stupid.
Now if the school is more unsure about you for any reason then the interview plays a greater role in the application. Not everyone has an equal chance of getting in after getting the interview invite and prior to being interviewed. Some ppl can get away with having an ok interview and others have to really kick it out of the park to get in.

I gotcha haha I agree some people have to work harder than others! Just hoping I get at interview from UTSW 🙂 Good luck with your app cycle!

Very keen for this weekend! Anyone else interviewing this weekend or in general -- PM me if you have any questions about the area! I live extremely close.

Also, is anyone bringing their parent or another guest to the Friday afternoon activities? The email says you can and when my dad saw that he got really excited and wants to come. Would it be weird? I would never bring a parent to the actual interview day, but is it okay for Friday?

I feel like your dad would be pretty bored with all the info sessions, but it definitely wouldn't be weird, so it's up to you and him.
Maybe I'll meet you this weekend 🙂. Let me know if you have any questions that don't get answered (highly unlikely but you never know).

Logged in today and got a surprise II!

Did you not get an email? Also, is it pretty obvious when you log in to your portal that you have an II? This is one of the few IS schools I haven't heard from and I am a bit confused. 🙂

I got an email later in the day! Yeah it'll be pretty obvious.

If you have been complete here for a while you should log in and check your portal, received an II and no email. It's been at least one day and still no email. Very exciting either way. Complete Late July btw.

Just got my II for 10/22 yesterday! Secondary app submitted back in June. Was the Friday afternoon + dinner program interesting? About how many current students were there?
Lots of current students go. There's actually not enough space for all of us, we have to get tickets to be able to go meet you guys! I think there are 50 or 60 spots for current students.
You'll also meet current students at Friday's lunch, Saturday's breakfast, and Saturday's lunch.

Hi all! I am interviewing at UTSW this weekend and would love to have some advice from you all! Anything helps because it is my first interview and it is nerve-wrecking to Southwestern as the first one.

UTSW was my first interview as well. Just relax! Both of mine were pretty conversational and not stressful at all. Make sure you have some answers prepped for the typical interview questions, but that goes for every school.

Anybody knows how to get from UTSW to DFW airport? Last time I checked the uber rate, $75, too steep.

Dart. Stops right by Parkland. I used to walk to work from there.

Also 75 seems way off I'm able to Lyft from Plano to DFW for $35.

I've done it a few times and even in traffic it's never been more than 25. Or see if your host will take you in exchange for a few dollars 🙂
