Did you interview and did you ever get the alternate list email?
You get only one email, either an alternate list (applicants who interviewed) or a rejection (applicants who did not interview). Then, people are taken off the waitlist as spots become available, and a final rejection email goes out to the remainder of the waitlist at the end of season (June).

In my alternate list email they said that updates go out on June, so either you get rejected or there is no update and you're still on the waitlist. You still have a chance after June and not everyone gets rejected.

If you are IS and you already have an IS acceptance, after June 1 you are removed from any TX waitlist.

If you are OOS and already have a TX acceptance, the same June 1st rule applies as for IS applicants.
June 1st is the date Texas schools have agreed to stop stealing applicants. After June 1st, only IS and OOS with no TX acceptances remain on waitlists and are eligible for acceptance.

Hello!

I have also been placed on the alternate list and am very excited and hopeful I am eventually admitted to UTSW. In the email itself it specifically addresses the concern of sending a letter of intent, saying "we will presume that you would consider an offer of acceptance from us. That is not to say that you would come here, but you would think about it. No additional letter is necessary."

My question is whether it is still commonplace to send a letter despite it not being "necessary", and if doing so would help or hurt my chances? I just want to do anything and everything I can to improve my odds!

Thanks in advance!

I sent one last year, but I did it before receiving the alternate list email. Once they tell you not to, it just seems like a bad idea to do it against their instructions, but it is up to you.

Historically, how generous has UTSW been with grants and scholarships? I see that their average indebtedness on MSAR is ~100k, but based on the financial package I've received so far (all loans), it seems like the ~100K average indebtedness might be due to a good amount of students being able to save money by having parental contribution? This could be a very narrow scope of how finances at med schools work. Also, if I've received a packet in the mail with financial aid information already, is that what I'm expected to get for this year? The website says that aid packages will be delivered in March so I'm kind of hoping for aid beyond loans..

FAFSA was available earlier this year so what you've received is your package (I also called awhile ago and that is what I was told).

You should also be able to go on your portal and see your financial aid package and accept or decline the loans and such. Prior to this year, March was around the time they went out.

Is someone able to link the Portal page login for accepted students, to check financials, transcript received, and things like that?

Did you obtain your password yet? The email should have the link in there along with the details on how to login.

On another note, which apartments would students recommend if you have a pet but want to be very close to campus 1st year? Not necessarily close to Parkland, but where MS1's would spend most of their time. I didn't attend Second Look weekend.

I'm looking at:
21 Forty Medical District
5225 Maple Avenue
Amli on Maple
Atera
Berkshire Medical District

But, it seems like there's lots more options based on their info packet...

Is parking on campus free? Do people bike to school?

Also an MS0 but I live close by, I'll send you a PM! But there are tons of apartments close to campus and they're almost all pet-friendly (except the school's subsidized apartments, Med Park). I believe parking on campus is $10 a month. There is also a DART station near campus (Southwestern Medical District/Parkland) as well as a TRE station (Medical/Market Center), and there are shuttles that connect them to campus. I talked to some people that said they bike or walk but I think most people drive -- the surrounding area is a little bit sketchy, but not enough to worry about.

Parking is 120 per year. Some people bike, but Dallas drivers are insane so I wouldn't recommend it unless you have a death wish.

As far as apartments go, I think a lot of people live at 5225 Maple, Amli on Maple, The Southwestern (I know that wasn't on your list). If you'd like a place with a lot of classmates, those would probably be pretty good.

Is there a program where we can start school a few weeks early? I remember hearing about something like that during my interview trail, but I don't know if it's a common thing.

Do you mean a sort of "intro to med school" course where they ease you into the first course before it begins? If so, I don't believe UTSW has one of those.

Actually you could still do the 6 week research elective if you'd like (starts any 6 weeks). Just search around for a PI on the UTSW research websites/email Amanda Arista (research coordinator). I think there could be options for other electives but not too sure.

On the past threads I remember reading something like around 1/3 of the class comes form the waitlist. I have a hard time believing it. Doesn't seem realistic. Is this really true? Does any one know anything about where these stats are coming from?

I have been wondering the same thing today!!!! I would like to know if anybody has been moved off the waitlist yet or if anybody knows a person who has already been moved off the waitlist...

I'm not sure about the 1/3 thing being exactly accurate, but I'd say waitlist movement should start pretty soon, if it hasn't already. Also, I do feel like quite a few people in my class got in off the waitlist, and I know a lot of MS2s got in off the waitlist.
It's a bit slower for OOS students, because people can hold multiple spots longer if they're from OOS (until sometime in late April/early May I think?).

Thanks! Yes, 1/3 sounds a bit too much for waitlist. But, good to know that quiite a few got in from your batch. If you were to estimate, do think it would be roughly 20 to 30 people or more like 10-15?

I definitely think more than 30. And also, by the time the waitlist starts moving, a lot of people have already decided they were going to go to another school, so by the end of April, filling one spot might require accepting 3 or 4 more people. I got in after quite a few rounds of waitlist acceptances (May 27th last year).

Thank you so much for your help! That seems like a promising number. Keeping my fingers crossed. Good luck to everyone on the waitlist.

May 27th???!!! That's cutting it pretty close! Lol

I forgot what UTSW's policy on update letters/LOI was, but do yall think sending an update at this stage in the game would be helpful at all?
FWIW I would be telling them about a new job and one of the projects I mentioned in the TMDSAS app is getting published.

I would call admissions. Last year the waitlist email specifically said not to send letters at this point. Just call and see what they say.
Edit: Also, congrats!

did any of you guys get your financial aid package today?

Oh yeah, they do say that in the waitlist email. Bummer.

What do you think about significant updates? When I applied I had zero publications, but I have had 3 publications submitted since my interview. I haven't told them because I want to respect the request for no letters, but I feel like this is a significant update that could help my standing on the waitlist. What do you guys think?

I think call and tell them exactly that, and then ask if in your case sending an update letter might be good. If they say no then don't do it, but who knows, they might say yes.
I remember how daunting it was to call last year though, because so much hangs in the balance, but calling and asking a question isn't going to hurt your application (unless you are really obnoxious/mean/rude on the phone).

Did you have any papers accepted or just submitted? Submitted isn't worthy of an update (you can submit anything to a journal). An accepted paper would be. If it's the latter I agree, call to ask.

Update: I have one paper accepted and 2 submitted and emailed the admissions department to ask if this was an update worthy of placement in my file, and they said they would put it in my file! Now I just have to hope they actually open my file again before June 1st 🙂

This is what I got as a reply when I emailed asking, although I'm not quite sure if this means that they wouldn't look at my file at all....

I don't think she would try to dissuade you if there would be a possible impact. HOWEVER, if you won't feel like you've done all you can without updating your file, perhaps it is worth it.

Not sure if they continue reviewing files.

Anyone accepted as an OOS have any advice for a future applicant? (Other than having high stats)

I'm just more afraid of them pissing them off after they said not to. So on one hand, I could feel like that I didn't get to show them everything I had, but on the other hand, I could just be shooting myself in the foot for annoying them when they already said they prefer that I didn't update them.

In that light, any potential benefit (honestly, this update probably wouldn't make or break you) doesn't seem to outweigh the risk of looking like you don't follow instructions.

Yay! I hope this will help your app!

As @wysdoc says, apply as early as possible. The early you apply, the earlier you interview, the better your chances are. Prepare well for interviews. The ones at UTSW are mostly conversational but you'll still probably get the usual "tell me about yourself" and you'll definitely be asked "why do you want to be a doctor?"
Also, take advantage of the optional essay on TMDSAS to add something about why you want to be in Texas. (unless they've changed it now and it has a more specific prompt or something)

Remind me again what your update was? Also a published paper?

It's not a published paper. I started working with a professor to help a new charity organization decide where to focus funds for the LGBTQ community in Texas as a whole, and I also got a scholarship to go do research in Germany this summer.

Well that all sounds very awesome and worthy of an update to me. I wish I knew more inside info to help you decide whether or not to send it 🙁. I think at this point the decision is yours to make for better or for worse.

Do you or any other UTSW students happen to know when it's too late to find an apartment near the school? I'm still waiting on other schools' waitlists and I'm hoping to come off of them. Would apartment hunting in July be suicide?

The cheapest options will be gone but there are always apartments available so you will be just fine if you wait until July.

I live in the Dallas area and will be matriculating there for the fall. You will totally be fine. There's a lot of apartments in the area to choose from. You may not get your ideal apartment but you will still have options. Apartments here typically work on a 30-60 day notice. Assuming you find out around May/June that gives you plenty time to look!
