2016-2017 University of Vermont Application Thread

Hey all! I'm interviewing here soon, traveling from the west coast, and am looking for some input on travel logistics. I'm arriving a day early to get a sense of the town. Would a car help me see more/get a better sense of the area? Or would I be fine staying downtown and mostly walking? What about getting to the interview.... is Uber reliable in Burlington? And one last question... I'm looking at taking the Megabus to Boston after the interview. The bus leaves downtown Burlington at 4:15. For those who have interviewed, was your interview day over by 3? Do you think this is pushing it too much with timing? Thanks for humoring me with your answers to the admittedly boring questions 🙂

I interviewed and the day finished around 2:30-3:00 pm so I actually had some time to explore the campus before catching the 4:15 bus back down to Boston.

I was from out of town too and also went a day early (great idea!) and you definitely don't need a car! Uber is reliable and everything is within 5 miles (mostly within 2 miles). I stayed at the best western and they had a shuttle to the school and when I wanted to go downtown I walked once and ubered another time. If you stay "downtown" you wouldn't need an uber at all. I also think you'll have plenty of time to get to your bus at 4:15, they were pretty punctual and I met people that had flights at 4:30 and were fine! Good luck and have fun!!

From what I can see, it's been taking about a month for each interview date.
The portal also says couple of weeks so... I wouldn't expect it any earlier.

Ya that's honestly faster than I anticipated.

any recent interview invites??

been pooled since mid august and waiting to get out already

Not sure if it helps but...

So from this thread alone, there have been invites at Aug 2, 10-11, Sep 12, 14.

For last year's cycle, Aug 7, 10, 11, Sep 1, 5, Oct 2, Oct 27, Nov 4, Nov 30, Jan 8.
Last last cycle, Aug 26, 28, Sep 3, 16, Oct 8, 28, 31, Nov 1, 18, Dec 1, 2, Jan 13,14

Key notes:
-That we didn't hear anything from October this cycle may be a coincidence and likely people didn't report it.
-Invites can happen throughout the week, Mon-Friday.
-No reports of II given out after early Jan it seems, so around end of Jan is when you should hang in the towel I think.
-It might be that they make decisions about invites every two weeks, and spread them out across a week to accommodate schedule changes/attendance.

Other than that, I wish all of us the best.

Thanks for doing this! I hope this means we should be seeing some II's in the next day or two...

Congrats to everyone! Are these trickling out throughout the day or does it look like they were sent out all at once?

Congrats to all who received interview invites today!!! Were any of you small pooled before receiving the invite?

FYI, there's also a free shuttle that runs every 15 minutes from the hospital/Uvm campus to downtown.

:arghh: banan? where banana? can someone call him I need to be held I think 🙁

congrats to the recent IIs babis I'm glad to see some movement!!!

Anyone from 9/24 still waiting to hear back? The lack of rejections this past Monday worries me :/

+1 They did say that they were behind during the interview day, so I'm not too worried. I feel like it's all just logistical stuff that delays these decisions. It's not you and anything you did, it's them trying to make sure everyone gets a thorough, equal, and fair look 🙂

Reassuring to hear 🙂
It's just hard not to worry when the majority of posts on these threads are from people excited to announce their II.

It is a tough process in general. Have known the former president for years and he was one of my letters of rec last year... didn't even get an interview. I hear you though, UVM is such a great school and it is hard to see other people getting II while some of us are still waiting. Just gotta have the mindset that if they don't think you are a good fit for them.. you probably wouldn't like the school anyway

Finally got my first II from here. I was really getting worried about not hearing back from any schools. I was complete in early august. Good luck to everyone. I know how stressful the waiting game can be.
Was this today? Congrats!

what are some of the top features of UVM that make it a cool place to pursue a medical education? I always hear a lot of people rave about it.

There's a required project they were talking about where you either had to do something for the community or pursue the medical education field in that time. Might be right up your alley.

Just education side:
-Lectures are not mandatory BUT they do have team based learning that is mandatory. Seems pretty accommodating to people with odd schedules, especially parents. Edit: Will gradually transition to a zero lecture, active learning scheduling where you might have to have more mandatory classes in the future.
-Checks in with you if you're falling behind on exams and offers free tutoring services. If you're good, you can tutor for the school. Pays $20+/hr.
-Gives you all the equipment you need. (EDIT: but the cost is included in the tuition)
-Integrated Curriculum covers preclinicals in 1.5 years, but current students say they felt they had more than enough time to prepare for STEP 1. One fourth year talked about how she felt overprepared for the exam (I'm assuming she did well).
-Clinical experience out the wazoo. Starting from first year. I mean, the Fletcher Allen (Edit: now called University of Vermont Medical Center) hospital is literally a small stroll away from the education building. . . .
-Pretty diverse community in Burlington, though everywhere else is homogenously white. Well assimilated refugee populations as well. So you'll have quite the diversity of patients to work with.
-There's a pretty big sim lab, but I didn't get to see much unfortunately. Doors were locked.
-Faculty are like the mom and pops you never knew you needed. Very accommodating to mentoring/guiding students who need them.

Environment of school:
-Tons of non-trads. Listened to accounts of some parents on interview day, and they seemed happy.
-Accommodating of all forms of diversity. LGBT friendly, faculty with rainbow badges. If you're religious and object to contraception/abortion, you can opt out. Students and faculty embrace each other and their differences it seems.
-Schools with one of the highest student satisfaction, located in Vermont which is one of the happiest, healthiest states to live in.
-They have a wellness committee that is serious about making sure students are both physically, mentally, and emotionally taken care. Outdoorsy students have found the time to hike, swim, mountain climb, work-out a lot within the efficient school curriculum. Offers mindfulness/yoga exercises if that's your thing.

Not sure what else to tell you. You'll be happy, comfortable, and well prepared for residency. It's all I can say.

Edit: Thanks to mdstudent11 for edits.
