2016-2017 West Virginia University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Well, I got rejected from here pretty damn fast. Granted I'm not from West Virginia, so I probably didn't have much of a chance anyway. To the OOS people getting II's, did you have a lot of community service volunteering?

Did you call the admissions office to ask why?

When picking an interview date is it as simple as it appears to be? Just pick the date, no entry of identifying info or other prompts?

EDIT: Yes, it is that simple. The date will show on the portal directly after selecting it.

Probably because I'm OOS with no ties to West Virginia and very little community service volunteering (never really had time for it in undergrad but I'm fixing that now). I kind of expected to get rejected, though.

II yesterday. Completed 8/9. OOS but very strong ties to the state. Really excited!

For what its worth, I'm out of state and I interviewed and was accepted here two days later (they make decisions every Tuesday, and mail out the decision letters the next day). Its definitely not the norm though. I would consider it one of my best interviews. WVU's med school really has a familial environment and is a great school. Very down to earth people.

Secondary submitted 8/7 and II received 8/17. First one this cycle!! OOS with no ties and LizzyM 67. November was the earliest option when I scheduled.

Does anyone have a pros and cons list for this school ,
I am from New York and definitely do not mind going/working in a rural area.
Any advice for people like me?

Anyone else interviewing September 1st? My first of two II so far this cycle.

II as well! First one, LizzyM ~71.

However, I can't seem to get to the page to schedule an interview, anyone else having this problem?

EDIT: Tried a different browser and it worked

There is no way I was able to meet the two week deadline on the secondary...I work 50 hours a week and am applying to 20 schools. I'm a week late. Does anyone know if I am DOA now as far as the secondary?

edit: Looks like others have said no.

Does anyone know how long they take to reply back after you have sent in a secondary; also, does anyone know if secondary = interview?

Secondary definitely does not equal interview

II today! 3.18 GPA, 515 MCAT. In-state.

Anyone else interviewing on Sept 23?

I sent in my secondary last Monday and I heard back today, so a little bit over a week for me. It seems like they send most of the IIs out on Wednesdays, but I've seen a few exceptions on here.

II today as well! Sent in secondary about 10 days ago. 3.7 GPA, 507 MCAT. OOS and URM

Rejected today~ OOS GPA 3.8 MCAT 504 with CARS 122, seems like the culprit! Only school that has rejected me thus far, also rejected 1 week after turning in my secondary when they said 2-3 weeks! Suspecting I got screened. 😀 Good luck all!

Rejection

Okay, thanks y'all! I sent in my secondary on Aug 27 so hopefully I will hear back something next week.

Interviewed yesterday. The experience for me was very positive and not much different from other interviews. The day started at 10:00 with a basic information session, then we had lunch for an hour in the conference room with two students, then we took an hour long tour, and then we had interviews. 2 interviews at 20 minutes a piece with faculty members. The interviews were very typical and relaxed. They know a lot about your applications and have reviewed them thoroughly. They will likely ask you typical questions you get in most interviews and clarify some details from your application. However, they do so in a way that is really relaxed and welcoming. The faculty and staff were very welcoming and kind and the current students seemed to genuinely like being there.
The school is attached to the hospital and is pretty huge, so you will not be able to see all of it in an hour but you will have a good idea of what it looks like and what amenities are available to you as a student. There are a lot of renovations going on in both the school and the hospital, so that is a good thing moving forward. Students are issued Mac Book Pros or Mac Book Airs, not a choice, these are just what the last few classes have been issued. They are not free, you pay from your first semester tuition. Lectures are recorded, they are not mandatory, there is no dress code.
The town is based around the university, which is split into two campuses. However, it seems everywhere you turn there is another university building, all throughout the town. The downtown area seems pretty decent with cafes, bars, hotels, etc. It is an older town, but there is a young vibe that runs through it due to the university. Oh yeah, by the way, tons of school spirit. WVU flags, shirts, hats, sweatshirts, buildings, stadiums, signs, banners, etc. everywhere you look. I think that in order to gain admission they require a blue and gold injection. But seriously, its really cool to see as it creates a community feel.
Overall, seems like a really great place with so much going for it. I have a great impression of the school and really hope to become a part of it.

Hope this helps!

Seconding your comments about Morgantown being awesome. I am a WV native and I've always enjoyed staying with friends there. It is beautiful, lots to do indoors and out, friendly people, and has lots of pride. Another little bonus is that the city is about 1 hour from a hub airport with lots of cheap direct flights (Pittsburgh), so if you're OOS or plan to travel it's very convenient.

does anyone know if the first round of acceptances will go out on Friday October 14th or Monday the 17th? I assume since the 15th is a Saturday that we won't hear anything over the weekend

From the past they're pretty strict on not giving out decisions before they're supposed to. I applied early decision and they used to do only snail mail and they mailed my response on October 1st so I didn't even get it until the 2nd or 3rd. It killed me! Haha. You could hear on a weekend since it's email now, but I'd guess (and that's really all it is! Haha) that Monday is more likely.

Anyone else who has interviewed this month care to share their experiences?

Can any current students, or people who have already interviewed, speak on the best travel method to campus for an interview? I would be flying in from Boston, but I'm unsure about flying into Morgantown directly or flying into Pittsburgh (apparently a 1-1 1/2 hour bus ride from the airport that goes directly to campus). Morgantown is much less flexible with flight times (some options are seriously 12-hour trips with 3 stops). Signed up to stay with a current student the night before, so no real time crunch, just don't want to get there super late or super early and be an inconvenience.

I flew into Pittsburg and rented a car. It was more convenient. Staying with a student is the best thing to do, I learned a lot about the school. If you get a nice host he or she might walk you to your interview 😀
