For all programs:
1. NOTE: Interviews occur on Thursdays and/or Fridays beginning in mid-September and finishing in February. Please detail any limitations on your availability during this time, such as international travel, work or courses. (500 characters)

2. Summarize your activities during the 2017-2018 academic year. Describe how your activities are preparing you for a medical career. (2000 characters)

3. How will your unique attributes (e.g., cultural or socioeconomic background, lifestyle, work experiences) add to the overall diversity of the Alpert Medical School community? (2000 characters)

For Regular MD only:
4. What are your aspirations for your medical practice? Fast-forward to 15 years in the future: where do you imagine yourself? (3000 characters)

For MD-ScM:
4. Imagine that you are approached by a multibillionaire philanthropist who wants to donate a substantial fund of money to a single project with the goal of "fixing the US healthcare system." He/she asks for your expert opinion on what project this money should go towards; what would you advise and why? (2000 characters)

5. Often when we talk about medicine, we focus on the individual physician-patient relationship. Why should medical schools train future physicians to care for communities and populations as a whole, and not just individual patients? (2000 characters)

Good luck to everyone applying!

I feel like I'd really like it at Alpert, but any current students wanna shed some light as to what kind of applicant does Brown typically look for?

For the course section, are you all just putting in the lecture courses and not labs?

I noticed that one of the competency is "Writing" but there is no space to mention this. What are people writing for "“Premed Competency Alternative”? Is that the place where we mention the "Writing" portion? And are people writing about their lab courses as well or just the lectures? Thank you!

I ended up ignoring the writing thing (they have my whole list of classes from primary app anyways, and it wasn't suggested on the list they provided us on the secondary application). I think the "alternative" portion is to address if you used AP credits/research experiences to replace one of their requirements. I am pretty sure you could also just write "and Lab" after your coursework to prove they were lab science classes if your transcript lists them differently.

I actually had a question about "summary of activities for 2017-2018." If applying without having taken gap years, how are people summarizing? Are they just writing about completing their degree and their extracurriculars? Mine sounds super listy right now so that I have enough space to talk about how I think all of my extracurriculars are "preparing me for my medical career." Any advice/input is appreciated!

Secondary submitted! Anyone else here from RI and looking for a little IS love??

this may be silly question but is anyone using "brown" and "alpert medical school" interchangeably in their secondary? or just "alpert medical school"?

For summarizing your activities, what format are y'all using. I'm thinking of going with a list.

How do we indicate that the courses had lab? Do we just write that next to the course number?

Anyone not receive their secondary yet? I know I'll probably get it soon, but I can't wait to be complete at Alpert. Definitely my top choice school.

Secondary received!

Question on letters:
"The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University requires either one composite recommendation from your undergraduate school’s premedical committee or three individual letters of recommendation from your premedical or research adviser, professors at the institution where you last studied, or other individuals of your choice."

They require one or three, depending on committee, but would they be down for me submitting 6?

Received my secondary today and got way too excited. 😳

For the courses, are people putting the minimum to fulfill the requirements or everything they've taken in that area?

I think I put the minimum. They have your transcripts if they need more clarification.

Secondary complete! Kind of a longshot, but hoping for the best.

Has anyone not received a secondary yet? I added this school about a week ago.

I haven't, but I'm not verified yet. Why can't they just send it out either way? They don't screen so I can't imagine having my GPA verified would matter much in terms of sending out secondaries. Plus, they won't look at my app until it's complete.

how specific are you guys getting for the aspirations for medical practice? I have a field I'm interested in (endocrinology), but I understand that it's also very important to keep an open mind in medical school so don't want to be too specific. thoughts?

I mentioned that I want keep an open mind once I really enter the medical field, but I went into detail about the field I'm most interested in at the moment. I wrote about which specialty I would enter if I had to choose right now based on my experiences in medicine.

That's not the point. As far as Brown, or any other med school, is concerned, I wouldn't know what the prompts are until they send the secondary. Schools are not saying, "Well, the prompts are on SDN so it doesn't matter how or when we send the secondaries out." I'm just wondering what their reasoning is.

Does anyone's status say their letters haven't been received? I just submitted but have been verified on AMCAS for a while...

Seconded.

Thoughts on #4 for regular MD? Should I solely discuss my aspirations or should I weave in Alpert's role in achieving my aspirations? I'm leaning towards the latter because they don't have a "Why Alpert" prompt, but maybe I should go with the former because they didn't specifically ask "Why Alpert"..? Will I seem disinterested if I don't talk about specific programs at Alpert? What if I come off as a try-hard? I don't want my desperation to attend Alpert to be too obvious.. but maybe they'd like that?

Someone help I'm going crazy

I'm going crazy

Clearly!!!

But in all seriousness, here's my advice. I would focus on your aspirations and maybe as an example use one of Alpert's programs. So, make it 90-95% about YOU and include a little Alpert in there. Do you like that as a compromise?

It is assumed that you are applying to Brown, or any other school, because you are genuinely interested in it because of certain things it offers: research, programs of study, location, etc. Therefore, it makes sense to discuss your aspirations by mentioning what specific about Brown will help you fulfill them and thus justifying your interest in Brown. That being said, don't bs them or stretch it. If your aspirations naturally aligns with something about Brown, mention it. If you're gonna make a ridiculous claim just cuz, it will come across as being a try hard. Hope this helps.

Hey, just a few questions about the ScM program.

How separate are the MD and ScM students? Do they interact often or are they more separated from the group?

Also, I know the website says PC isn't absolutely mandatory but in your experience do students have a hard time getting into other fields?

Just to confirm, the secondary application says you get considered for the MD program first and then ScM, so it's possible to get into MD but then not ScM?

Thanks!

MD and ScM students all take the same classes, with ScM students taking 1 additional one every semester! (They also have to conduct research for their thesis over the summer).

According to the administration, Primary Care is encouraged but definitely not mandated. You can enter whichever field you want!

That is true, some accepted MD applicants applied for the ScM program but have not been accepted. In our class of ~144 there are ~21 PCPM students.
