Anyone know the average COMLEX scores (1-3) for the past couple years? I saw the average for this past step 1... wow, just..wow...

For comlex level 1: 2017 was 550’s, 2018 was 540-550’s, 2019 was 590’s.

Pop quiz, which class do you think got an extra 4 weeks for board prep? At the insistence of the classes before them.

Was I the only one expecting USMLE?
They just did a presentation for us on what the top scorers did (both USMLE and COMLEX) and they said this class that just took it blew the USMLE out of the water too in terms of averages. I don't have specific numbers though

What comlex score is equivalent to a 240 on step 1?
I don’t think you can say one is equivalent to the other. That being said, 240 is 70th percentile. 565 comlex is 70th percentile.

591 is 80th percentile, which is awesome!

soo... about that white coat thing...lol

edit: sorry let me elaborate. I'm a little bit ...disheartened. I want to ask around to see if most of the class felt the same. Maybe be we could let the admins know? Idk.. :/ what do you guys think?

I heard that the incoming class (you guys!) will also be having their white coat ceremony incorporated with the Rite of Passage ceremony, is that what you are concerned about?

What dates are you given to study for boards? Including the 4 weeks of board prep

My buddy said he thinks his class’ average step 1 was a 234 but he said he will check.

yeah so I'm a little confused for the matriculating class of 2018 we are getting our white coats for OMM classes and such but we're not having a dawning of the coats ceremony?
Because it looks like students already have their coats in the Rite of Passage ceremony and are just taking the oath.

hey could you link the board score

I don't have a specific link, I saw a student post it earlier in this thread. He/She said it was emailed to him/her by faculty. If you search "591" in this thread I'm sure you can find the specific post.

lol OMM class in a white coat would be so uncomfortable. You'll only use it for SPAL or specific events throughout the year, up until your 3rd and 4th years.

Our class just had ours given to us. I'm sure they'll do something more ceremonious at the Rite of Passage, but I don't if anyone can really tell you what that will be since they started this new trend with our class.

Changes year to year a bit. 2018 class wasn’t officially done with school until late May like the 26th. Class of 2019 was done early May and I believe they have stuck with that schedule to my knowledge. Because it paid dividends in better performance for the students.

As PastaandFriends mentioned, you only need your white coats for SPAL, other professional events on campus (such as the Senior Health Fair, GEMS, etc.), and for taking cool med school photos. For our class this year they just gave us our white coats a few weeks into class. I am not sure what their plans are for the Rite of Passage, whether we will be "given" our white coats again or not. They tried to squeeze in a white coat ceremony for us this spring, as our class was also a little disappointed by the lack of ceremony. Unfortunately, they gave us 2 months notice for an event that was planned on a Wednesday making it a little tricky for families. Our class voted to combine it with the Rite of Passage, which was the DMU's original plan. Don't worry you will still get your white coat and have a ceremony with your families, just a little later on!

FYI..a 4th year posted the match list in a thread literally named 2018 Match list in the med student forum. Kinda hard to read but if anyone was curious

Regarding the white coat ceremony - DMU Class of 2022 has a post saying class of 2022's white coat ceremony will NOT be combined with the rite of passage. It'll be in the Fall (sept).

No Neurosurgery this year? :/
One thing I've always been told is match lists are super self-selecting. Most people that come here are fine with primary care, at least historically. So just because there isn't a specific match doesn't mean its impossible, just that nobody in the current class felt like going that route.

it takes a special kind of person to want to be miserable for 7+ years. Only one classmate I know of had any interest in neurosurg and ended up liking critical care Way more. DMU has matched it before but it’s never really popular with students.

Don’t mislead yourself into thinking that just because there isn’t one on the list this year it’s not possible. As you can see we matched multiple ortho, ENT, vascular surgery, gen surg.

Yeah good point, even looking at last years match they did pretty well.

do you know if DMU has historically matched ophthalmology?

A lot of really impressive emergency med matches. Also that Hopkins gas match is :flame:

Also didn't see that ACGME Vascular match, pretty awesome

Wait so we will have a white coat ceremony like in 2016 :OOO
Edit: because some one in our 2022 class reached out to admissions and they said that we will only have a Rite of Passage ceremony in spring of 2020 with not white coat ceremony mentioned

2016? you mean 2018? and there was an update again from I believe a current student who received clarification from Dean Ripley

So I crunched some raw numbers on that DMU list. Just going by raw numbers there were 175 ACGME matches out of 213 total matches. That is 82%. If you include the military matches that number goes up to 86% ACGME. Some of the pre-lim/transitional years are most likely double counted seeing as how many pgy-2 spots there are. Taking into account that ~30% of the AOA matches were Ortho/ENT/GS level matches that is dang impressive. Taking that further if you subtract the more competitive AOA matches from the people who went AOA, for my purposes Ortho/ENT/GS/OB, you only have ~15 people that ended up in AOA IM, FM, Peds or a TRI.

tldr: DMU is doing something right

edit: went even a step further. There are 10 PGY-2 matches and 16 TRI/Prelim/TY matches so there are only 6 PGY-1 only matches that don't have a categorical spot attached to them.

For the current 2nd years, June (classes end mid-May). Most people want a vacation or time to move to their new rotation site in July, since we start rotations at the beginning of August.

Yes. Late June to early July usually. But if you want more time off for summer then bust some ass during second semester of second year and take em early June. Maybe even late May depending on how good you feel.

Don’t be fooled by that. It isn’t the school doing it, because once we hit clinical rotations it’s the students education and their hard work that got them to their spots. And it’s the alumni who have graduated before us that are still in residency who support fellow DMU students because they know how little the school actually does for us

Can you elaborate?

The school creates hurdles and roadblocks for the vast majority of students. They create policies that directly hinder the ability of students to obtain rotations 4th yearwhether it be because of abnormal dates or because they require weird documentation. It has ultimately gotten to the point where ACGME programs as a whole will not enter into affiliation agreements with osteopathic schools (Nebraska recently changed their policy to this), but DMU suddenly has a new policy that every single institution we rotate at must have an affiliation agreement.

There’s so much more I could say about this but I don’t feel like typing up a paper right now.

This is one of the reasons I'm a little hesitant about potentially accepting a position at DMU, I feel like their first two years are pretty excellent (seen through board scores, etc). Unfortunately, it seems like the clinical portion doesn't match, particularly where nearly 1/2 the class has to find their own rotations. It just doesn't make sense to me and I feel like even other DO schools are doing a better job of lining up rotations for students. Definitely something DMU could improve on, in my opinion.

You sound like a smart cookie. The first two years are excellent, this is true. The only thing that saves the 3rd and 4th Years is the camaraderie and legitimate desire to help each other out. We just got done tonight doing an almost 2 hour presentation covering the step by step process of pursuing Emergency medicine. And there are students that do that or try to help the classes below them in some way for every specialty.

I'm really glad to hear that everyone is so collaborative- Now I've just have to get the admissions committee to collaborate towards bringing me off the wait list!

How do people set up rotations then? Do students have to reach out individually to separate hospitals/clinics to set up their own rotations?

Thanks for the explanation. The rotations are one of my main hesitations about DO in general, and I asked about them specifically at my interview and my interviewers really couldn’t answer. That being said, DMU students seem to consistently match into programs I would be happy with, so I’m trying not to let it dissuade me. DMU is still my top DO school.

By the way, has anyone heard back recently? It’s been like 6 weeks since my interview.

Your third year rotations are set up for you for the most part but you set up your entire 4th year yourself. DMU has an optimization thing that you can get rotations through the school, but there aren't enough spots for every student to get a rotation, and some of the rotations are in things like PT, podiatry, and working in a pharmacy. You do the work to get your away rotations and you cross your fingers and hope that DMU doesn't give you any trouble or extra hoops to jump through. Getting 4th year rotations works in a few ways by knowing people, asking previous preceptors to take you, finding alumni who might take you, and applying for rotations at allopathic schools through VSAS/VSLO.
