It’s still definitely possible to get admitted off the waitlist, so don’t lose hope. If you don’t mind me asking, where were you admitted?

Thanks so much! PM’d you!

I have a friend at school who was accepted off the wait-list a couple weeks before we started, she was able to find a place right by DMU...not sure if that would be similar for your current acceptance area, but if you get in last minute to DMU I am sure you would be able to find a place. You could always find a place at the current acceptance city for now and then just lose the deposit if you end up going to DMU. It wouldn't be awesome, but in the long run if DMU is cheaper overall I don't think losing an apartment deposit would be the worst. Just explain to the apartment that school required you to move to a different city.

Great idea and very helpful info. Thank you so much!

Over/under 1 week before the first quartile starts getting those glorious calls?

If it's anything like last year, prob under. Also, just a heads up for something that might happen, I remember getting an informal email from someone in admissions asking if I had decided on a school / was still interested in DMU after the quartiles went out. I thought it was weird cuz I already said yes to one or two other/more-formal emails that were similar a couple months prior, but within a few hours of me responding yes to this one, they sent an acceptance email.

I’m ready for that acceptance call/email anytime now, DMU... it sucks being in the middle of May and still not knowing where I’ll be living in 2-3 months.

It works out. I got accepted late May last year and finding a place is a little more stressful than is ideal, but three months from now you'll be here and settled and it'll be fine. 🙂

Anyone know if they have gotten through all of the first quartile?

Can any current students comment on how willing DMU is to let students rotate in their home states? I’d have a great year-long site to rotate at in Kansas if they’d let me. From what I understand, DO schools are typically more lenient when it comes to rotation sites.

It can be simple or complicated depending on the site. DMU requires the site to sign an affiliation agreement with them in order to even consider allowing students to rotate there. This can become complicated if the site doesn’t like DMU’s terms. Also, if DMU already uses your desired site for other students or if another school (say KU) has an agreement with your site saying ‘no other students allowed,’ you’re out of luck (I’m pretty sure we don’t have any Kansas affiliations though).

That said, several students in my class and the one above set up most of their rotations in their home state with minimal issues (NY, WA). May be trickier with Midwest states.

Thanks for the reply. I don’t believe KU has any terms with the hospital I work at now, as I know I’ve seen at least some KCU students rotate through here. Hopefully it works out, because Wichita is a great place to train and I could be back home where all my family is.

If you're talking specifically about Via Christi, odds are you should be able to work something out. However, VC is about as bureaucratically effective as the US government. So be prepared to put in a little extra effort and jump through a couple of hoops. If you're talking about Wesley, you may have difficulties...I don't know much about them. The VA could be a maybe, and SBA would probably be a stretch. One of the second years somehow worked out something with a KS hospital that I worked at and I would have never guessed would take a DMU student, so who knows?

I am actually at Via Christi, so that’s encouraging. Thanks!

This might be a stupid question, but does Des Moines send a secondary or are the questions in the primary all the questions we have to answer?
They used to send a secondary, but now they have you answer the questions as part of the primary app- they are the same ones. Their primary also costs a bit more than other schools, and I think that's why. I really wish other schools would do this, honestly. Less waiting around and obsessively checking your email for updates.

Everyone still on the waitlist, does anyone have a sense of when they may extend additional offers to the rest of first (and maybe 2nd) quartiles?

I was thinking it would be yesterday for the rest of first and next Wednesday start on us 2nd quartilers so I'm not sure wondering the same....

I would guess it depends on when the admissions committee can meet. DMU is having their commencement this week, so they may be busy with that. Crossing my fingers you will hear back soon though!

I'm thinking that maybe they'll meet on Tuesday (would be Monday but Memorial Day), and then notify us on Wednesday (5/30)? I'd really love to attend, so hopefully we get good news!

Anyone else feeling disappointed about how little waitlist movement there has been this year compared to last year?
Patience though...we had a few kids get taken in a day or two before orientation. Its always moving

I keep hoping that they are just doing everything a little later than last year. Quartile rankings came out much later and they may just be trying to figure out their internal ranking system of people in each quartile. I am getting extremely nervous though....

2 years ago barely anyone got off the waitlist as opposed to last years everyone. You have two complete opposite ends of the spectrum. Just be patient and whatever happens, happens. I have to keep telling myself that as well.

Pretty sure KU has a large cohort of students at Via Christi. I wouldn't count on being able to do all of your 3rd and 4th year there. Some rotations, sure. But all I highly doubt.

Does DMU give first years stethoscope or any other gear? There’s a sale rn wondering if I should buy.

This is true, a whole year would be unlikely and two years probably wouldn't ever happen. The main reasons you would probably be able to do several rotations at VC are: they have 3 hospitals in Wichita, the KU-W class is (last I knew) still pretty small, and Wichita offers nothing clinically that KC doesn't, so even KU-W students end up spending a fair amount of time in KC 3rd and 4th year.

The above poster is correct...a whole year/years, probably not. Maybe half a year each year...possible.

There will be an equipment sale at the beginning of the year, and you'll have to buy everything yourself. The org that does the sale (SOMA, maybe?) is good about making the payments due after loans have been disbursed, so that's good. You'll hear varying opinions on this, and they will inevitably encourage you to buy everything through them but there are cheaper options.

You'll have to have an oto/ophthalmoscope, stethoscope, reflex hammer, eye charts, and some other random stuff. The packages they offer are reasonable, but not cut-rate prices. Expect to spend 500-750 on the basics including stethoscope if you don't have any of the equipment already. The extra bells and whistles crap and fancy stethoscopes aren't my thing, so I got all my stuff for about 600 from them. I have friends that bought stuff online/from upperclassmen and only spent ~400. So there are options.

Does anyone know when we should expect to be notified of our financial aid award?

So I know that everyone studies differently but does anyone know how much textbook reading is required in our first (semester/year)? Or can we just hardcore memorize every detail of the podcasts/ppt/lecture notes and be good.

I never looked at a textbook once. Everything is there in the powerpoints and the lectures. We had most people hardcore memorize every detail, and while the grades were great (I was told it was the highest median GPA in a long time), I've heard from some that they burnt out by the end though and didn't have as much recall as they would expect based on grades. Don't worry overly much about the grade itself, just make sure you know as much as you can and you know it well.

For matriculating students, when and how did you receive information about financial aid awards (scholarships, grants, etc.) from DMU?

Does anyone know if they reached the 2nd or 3rd quartiles yet? I'm on the fourth quartile and feeling a little screwed.
