Did you apply for EDP by any chance?

No. As much as I would love to go to this school. I still have an instate preference because I have a long term relationship I want to maintain.

How long does it usually take for secondaries from RFUMS? So excited!

I think last year people started posting about secondaries in July. Here's the prompt from last year:

Why did you choose to apply to the Chicago Medical School at Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science? Please limit your response to 100 words or fewer.

Optional: We encourage you to submit an optional diversity statement that specifically addresses how, if admitted to our program, your admission would contribute to the diversity of the Chicago Medical School at Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science Community. This optional statement may be considered for admission and/or scholarship purposes. Please limit your response to 100 words or fewer.

Those have historically been the prompts, so I would say it's a safe bet they will be similar this year.

Accepted and matriculating this year. AMA.

What is the location like? Are there opportunities for research? How tight-knit is the class? Weather throughout the year? Is housing affordable? Do they use shelf exams?

North Chicago - suburbs between Waukegan (underserved community) + Lake Forest (rich, average income of $270k). Downtown is about 1hr depending on traffic. Most people move to the city 3rd year.

Research - more basic science than clinical. There's a research committee + an internal site that helps students obtain research. They are adding on a research building for more opportunities - not sure when its going to be completed but probably not next year.

Weather - Ranges from hot/humid in the summer to freezing/snow in the winter. It gets colder than the Northeast but otherwise comparable.

Class - Pretty friendly in general. People share books, ppts, make flashcards, etc. Grading is P/F first 2 years. Ranking is internal and only used for AOA & a dean's letter distinction if you get an average of 90+ first 2 years. Clerkships are Honors, High Pass, Pass, Fail.

Housing - Navy Housing (across the school) is the cheapest. Some people pay $350 with 3 other roommates. Student Housing + Woodlands right next to the school is more expensive (see the links). All within walking distance. Its possible to do M1/M2 without a car, but I'd recommend having one.

Shelf Exams - 1st year - NBME Anatomy. 2nd year - Path, Pharm, Micro/Immuno, Behavioral Science, & practice STEP1 NBME exams. All clerkships use NBME in 3rd year except for Family Med which uses FMCases. Dedicated study time for STEP1 is 5-6 weeks depending on when you get assigned Clerkship Skills Week prior to beginning 3rd year. Classes taper off in January in second year - really lots of time to study for STEP1.

Feel free to PM for any specific questions.

I graduated from RFU last year and just finished my intern year. I can't answer questions about current goings-on at the school as I've become quite detached from it, but I'm happy to answer questions about clerkships (the ones I did, obviously) and anything 3rd and 4th year related. I was heavily involved in the ICC (free clinic) while I was there, but it looks as if the structure of it has changed enough that I don't know exactly how it works anymore.

Can you comment on your experience with the ICC? What kind of things were you doing, is it easy to get involved? And how long/week were you there? Of course, it may have changed, but I'd like to hear at least how it was when you were there - if you're willing to share :)

I just found out that RFU requires the CASPer test now. Does anyone know if it's possible to receive a II or at least be considered for a II before the CASPer results are transmitted to them? I'm pretty unfamiliar with how CASPer works within the general timeline of application.

RFU didn't require CASper in the previous cycles. Most likely no one on here will know what the upcoming interview cycle is going to be like; however, other schools (i.e NYMC) give out interviews even before they receive the CASper scores since it takes anywhere from a month-and-half to two months from your test date for the school(s) to receive your score.

I'm curious if this is the same as "Tell us about a challenge you've overcome" (even those not directly related to applying) or if they mean "Tell us about any challenges specifically related to your application"

Has anyone NOT gotten their secondary yet? Getting slightly worried...

I'm considering not writing this essay because it is optional and i feel like they want something specific to the medical journey??

Would anyone care to exchange secondary essays for comments?

How do you know its optional?

Applicants are asked to complete two optional essays to further inform our committee. Each Essay answer should be no longer than 100 words.

Yea I'm leaning that way myself. I have my own challenges I've overcome in life, but none of them were challenges that I needed to overcome in order to apply

Going to do the same as well. The essay is optional and my "challenge in life essay" is for a slightly earlier period that college. Plus that essay is more than 100 words (even the condensed version).

It was easy to get involved, particularly in my year when we were creating the clinic. I was there for 5-6 hours on days when I was volunteering. Basically, you see a patient in an interprofessional team, then you staff with an attending and a group of a ton of other people (NPs, clinical pharmacist, a bunch of other students from different fields) all at the same time, and you manage by group consensus, essentially. The process takes a long time so they kept the patient load low.

Secondary submitted. Does anyone know what my next step is? Do I just wait for a Rejection or II?

Yes, you pretty much have to wait. Sadly it could take awhile. It is the hardest part of this whole process. Do your best to enjoy your summer and fall. There is no need to panic until Thanksgiving at the earliest.

As far as updates go, the admissions office does not accept updates unless it is an Institutional Action, Felony, Misdemeanor or Military Discharge explanation.

I'm an incoming MS1, happy to answer any question.

Secondary received and submitted! Now to get CASPer out of the way...

Received and submitted, ended up writing both optional essays. LOR requirements are tough for this one though :\ choosing 3 from my 6 will not be fun

Maybe I am just reading too far into it, but for the first optional essay. Do they specifically mean challenges in applying to med school. Or do they just mean overall challenges?

For the first secondary essay, do they specifically mean a challenge in the application process? Or in general? Like the normal adversity/challenge prompts?

I took the question as basically, "what challenges did u have before you applied here? Such as money, personal problems, balancing school work and social life, etc"
