2017-2018 SUNY - Upstate

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Is this necessarily a bad thing? Should I treat it as a rejection?

Not at all, several people get an II off hold every year! I just replied quickly when I thought it was waitlist before your edit.

Hi everyone, new here! I was wondering if your portal necessarily had to be clear to mean you had a decision coming soon. I interviewed Oct 2 and they said we would either hear the 16th or by the end of the first week of Nov. I'd obviously prefer the former haha! My portal has not cleared interview info yet.

In the past the portal decisions have always come 2-3 business days after the portal cleared, or the first business day after 10/15, whichever is later. So, you probably won't hear back on Monday. (But you still may) Sorry and good luck!

Does anyone know if we can send updates if we were put on hold? I know it says reviewered again after December 1, but I should have another grade (only one class since I work full time), a lot of volunteering hours as well as new volunteering roles, and possibly another first author publication by then, just not sure if they accept them

Checked portal on Friday 10/13 and had an II! OOS -- didn't get an email, not sure how long that II was there, maybe a few days or so.

Accepted through portal! No email. All early interviewees go check your portals. Good luck!

Congratulations!!!!! Just want to be sure, did your portal clear before you received your acceptance?

Can anyone describe to me what the portal should look like once it clears? I think that mine has cleared but I cannot see anything about my status in terms of acceptance or hold etc. Where would I find that?

anyone with cleared portal who interviewed Oct 2 ? Congrats to those accepted!! Were you interviewed in Sept?

I interviewed on September 13, and I no longer have the interview page, but I can't see my decision anywhere :S anyone have that issue

Congrats to all of you who got in! I have an interview in january! Anyone know what the interview to acceptance rate is?

This is what I am getting.

congratulations to all those accepted. was anyone from the October 2nd interview day accepted?

Anyone here interview on Sept 6th, have a cleared portal and no final decision? I find this a little odd, as I remember them saying we should hear back by Oct 16th.

So I just found out Upstate requires stats. I never took it and graduated. Is it gonna affect me for getting an interview or not? If I get one and then an acceptance, I can always take it at a local college right? Or will they blackball me from an interview because I didn't take it. Thanks!

I don’t have stats and was accepted today. It is understood that I will complete the requirement prior to matriculation.

Would those who received a decision yesterday mind sharing their interview date? And did those who got a decision receive both a portal notification and an email?

has anyone received HPA status, I know in the interview Jenn Welch mentioned, the earlier the interview the better the chances to get in off the HPA..but looking at past forums I'm not really seeing that! Do any past or current students know about chances of getting off that list?

Congrats to everyone who got accepted so far!!

Just got an II here this morning via email and earliest date I saw was for 1/10, does anyone know if the interview waitlist has any movement?
And I've heard that Upstate isn't super OOS-friendly (CA resident here), is the class majority from NY/tri-state area?

Whats your LM

@aquarius93 once you receive an II, residency plays no role in determining admissions (this was stated by one of the assistant deans). If I were you, I would attend the interview unless there is a reason why you would not like to attend upstate.

I interviewed second week in September.

To kind of echo what others are say:

If by "interview waitlist" you mean the ability to move your date, by chance, to an earlier date - then yes. Rarely (but sometimes) earlier interview spots open up. Several people I know in my class interviewed in January (or later).

As @nywst said, once you get an OOS II, you're past that selective process. This year, actually, they increased the number of OOS/International spots for acceptances.

I just had my interview yesterday. There are 2 different waitlists. There is the HPA (high priority alternate list) and that has a good amount of movement to it every year. There is also the alternate hold list (I think it's called) and there hasn't been anyone pulled off of that in a few years. For next year the class will be 170 students. Around 650 people are invited for an interview and Dean Welsh stated that they generally give out more than 400 acceptances to fill out the class.

I say go to the interview, especially if you don't have an acceptance already. Although the majority of the students are from the NY/tri-state area I don't think it matters once you've already been invited for an interview. Good luck!

Thank you all for your input! Definitely planning on attending the interview either way, just wanted to know a bit more on my chances post-interview. Upstate seems like an amazing school and I love the area too since it reminds me of my hometown. Looking forward to January

Just like @dr_stewpeas, I was accepted to Upstate but I will be going somewhere else. It's a brutal process and I will tell you it's definitely not all about your stats. I got a 500 on the MCAT and was accepted to 3/6 schools I was accepted into with scholarships. Upstate, in particular, told me I had a stellar interview and was vouched for during the committee meeting by one of the interviewers. The point is, put a lot of effort into writing good essays/secondaries, and if/when you get an interview invite, prep extremely well. I had 6 interviews and performed poorly on the first three. I later found a book (which I can refer you to if you PM me) which helped tremendously with the remaining interviews and was able to gain admission to all the other schools (including some high-ranking schools if that matters to you) thereafter. Work hard/pm me for tips and good luck. Also be confident in yourself!

Hello,

Thanks for your insight and your comment. I have an interview for Upstate in a few weeks. I wanted to know which both you used to help you on your interviews?

I interviewed 9/13 and was notified via email during the morning of 10/16. Checked my portal and saw the congratulatory message on there as well.

Rejected pre-interview just now. OOS. LM 66. Complete 7/14. Congratulations on the acceptances and good luck to the rest of you!

Rejected as well. Got an email a little while ago. Congrats to everyone accepted!

Out of curiosity, does anyone know how we are scored post-interview? Is the decision made mainly based on interview or is the interview a small part of your overall score?
