Can a current student chime in on what the weekly schedule looks like for an M1/M2? I'm mostly interested in how many hours per day are scheduled out. In this picture, it just says AM and PM, so idk if that means like 8-12 and 1-5 or some other set of hours. I certainly hope there aren't many 8-5 days, but rather more like 4-6 hours of scheduled time per day so we have time to study and do other things.

So your weekly schedule can change depending what block/course you're in. AM is 8-12, PM is 1-5. (We're always free 12-1). But there are rarely ever 8-5PM days. I think Anatomy is the only block in M1 that was somewhat more regularly with longer days (9-4/8-5), and that's because of the lab. Lab however was not mandatory, so lab groups usually divided up the work, and went on specific days.

*Also, just to mention, even though the schedule is blocked out 8-5, sometimes it's not a hard time-line. Most things like labs get done way before the time we have until etc. If a lecture is scheduled to 5pm (pretty rare), they do usually fill the time allotted. Again, this mostly applies to Anatomy. This will change somewhat because they made some changes to the curriculum so you will have all Tuesday afternoons free starting August.

If you're someone who doesn't go to class, you will certainly have a lot of free time. If you do go to class, there's still a good amount of time scheduled out. In any given week you will have about 2 free afternoons (nothing after 12 PM). Most of the times if you do have anything after 12, they are not mandatory unless it's small group. About 1 afternoon block a week, you will either have Medical interviewing, or Physical Exam (depending on which semester you are in), which is mandatory.

Personally, I think I have more scheduled out time in Medical School than I did in undergrad.

Thank you for the detailed response. That makes me feel better because that schedule looked intense. Just want to make sure I’ll have plenty of time to self-study and workout!

Got my financial aid info today. I didn’t get an offer for any need-based aid (which I guess isn’t really surprising, since I’m a nontrad with an ok-paying job and my parents are comfortably middle class). Bring on the $$$$ debt!

Hopefully some of you guys have better luck in the aid department.

+1. Just glad to be accepted here honestly.

I also got my financial aid award today. I’m looking at about 42k in loans 40k in need based scholarships.

I'm looking at >50k loans a year. Pretty disappointed, I thought the aid was going to be better than it was. To clarify - the need-based scholarship amount listed is that amount every year - correct? For example, if it lists "2k," I'll get 2k every year?
It depends on the scholarship you were awarded. Next to my scholarship says (4 year award), which means I’m guranteed that amount for the 4 years I attend there baring any huge differences in my parents income

Do all students get free bus transportation in Pittsburgh? Also, does anyone know if there is a gym on campus and whether or not students have free access to it? Sorry for posting so many questions! I'm unable to attend second look.

So we have the consensus that the Need Based Aid we were given is for year one and guaranteed for all 4 years barring unsatisfactory academic performance etc. (aka amount on our award will also be the same amount for years 2-4) ?

Look forward to meeting everyone tomorrow!

I see all you second lookers walking down the halls...I'm a little bit detached from the med school application process, but I'm one of the M4s who matched IM and am also free to answer any and all questions! On a nice online radiology rotation this month 🙂

To anyone who has withdrawn, did you receive an email confirmation after going through the process on the portal? I never received an email and I still have the withdraw tab on my portal, so I am not sure if it went through.

Maybe you can email them! haha WL students like me would be happy to take your old spot 🙂

Just withdrew my acceptance, good luck to everyone on the waitlist!
Would you mind checking to see if you still have the withdraw tap on your portal? Also, did you get an email after you withdrew? Thanks!

My account was deactivated right after I withdrew so I can’t log back in. I have not gotten an email back

Yeah, Pitt acts like a scorned lover when you withdraw..kicks you out of the apartment pretty fast. And I still find it odd that to accept financial aid you have to write a thank you letter to their donors.

What if you got a crappy amount of aid?

You're thanking the people/private parties that donated money for your need-based scholarship, and I've seen it at most of the schools I got into.

Crappy or not, someone still donated that money so you could pay less for school...

Does Pitt offer an MD/MBA program or something similar? I couldn't find anything online...

Touche, it just seems odd to me.

Heads up that under my admissions data form tab on the portal it now says "only available to admitted students" even though I am one and filled out the forms before! I called the office and they said it's a glitch and everything is fine- hopefully I save someone else from the same panic attack!

Is pitt unranked P/F for the first two years? I hear so much conflicting information.

We don’t have to make any deposit or anything to hold our spot before the 30th right?

Would also like to double check.

Is there ANY action to be taken to commit to Pitt? Aka, is doing nothing = holding an acceptance here by 4/30?

Na, you're all fine. If you're committed to Pitt, just make sure you follow the Multiple Acceptance deadline and withdraw from all other schools by 4/30, and if you haven't already, send Pitt your financial aid info.

Are significant others allowed to live in the Darrah Apartments with med students?

I really hate to add to the neuroticism, and take this with a grain of salt, but one of the administrators at second look said attendance was way higher than expected. This might imply Pitt over-accepted and there may be minimal waitlist movement. But hey, I don't know anything

We need a brave soul to call the admission office and ask about that.

Well thanks for letting me know, to quote my WL letter "We will continue to update you as the year progresses". Ya right. Pitt WL movement is so weird this year.

lol

Do any current students have the list of what textbooks will be required? I know there are custom ebooks made for the classes but I'd like to start building a background.

There are no truly “required” textbooks for classes (though some books are some that are more useful than others). You will be provided a printed syllabus before each block and additional books may be recommended . Certain blocks will also provide access to online versions of some books. I’d hold off on buying books for now. Suggested books may change as curriculum changes as well, so it may be different by the time the block begins. If you are super keen on getting a book at this time, then Netters can be useful for your first anatomy block. Otherwise enjoy the rest of your summer!
