2017-2018 University of Pittsburgh

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Can you become a PA resident for tuition purposes? Currently an Ohio resident.

I am also married with a spouse that works as a nurse if that matters.

You think Pitt reduced the number of WL spots? Based on this thread, it seems like a lot of people got put on it.
I do not think this at all. My original post said "This is assuming that Pitt hasn't significantly reduced the total of WL spots. But that's seems like a very reasonable assumption just given the self reporting on this thread."

Off topic but Reddit has such a far superior thread organizing structure

@ohnotornadooo I have been scouring the web trying to find Pitt's Step 1 average..could you help with some stats?
Hovers around 235-237ish, last year's class was apparently a little lower. Before I started I was honestly worried about what the Step average said about the quality of the pre-clinical curriculum, but now I'm pretty sure Pitt's kinda middling board scores (at least for its rank) just reflect how holistic the admission process is. Pitt cares way more about communication skills, research, etc. than standardized test taking ability, and that shows in Step. And in the end, Pitt does much better in the match than the Step 1 would indicate though so I wouldn't worry too much about it : )

Ah ok, I misunderstood

does anyone remember if the first 2 years are true pass/fail here? can’t find it in my notes!

While they are P/F for preclinical years, they are not a true unranked P/F school. So they may use our grades 1st and 2nd year to determine AOA, awards, evaluations, etc.

Very few schools are unranked P/F (only like Mayo, Harvard, Stanford, and a few others).

Ah I see..I was just wondering because they were previously HP/P/F I believe...

Do those internal rankings potentially affect residency/match?

This bothers me, because my tour guide explicitly told us that "preclinical years are unranked P/F and the only thing that is reported for these years in MSPE is whether you passed or did not pass. AOA is entirely based on clinical grades." I'm not saying you're wrong, but I don't know what to make of it.

From my limited understanding of how all this works, pre-clinical grades are typically ranked very low on the list of priorities by residency program directors (i.e. unless you fail a pre-clinical class, you will be fine). What really matters is Step 1, clinical rotation grades, evaluations, research, etc. But I'd imagine if you killed the first two years, you will probably be on track to do well for Step, get great evals, and AOA – which can be important for some residencies.

My tour guide and student hosts said the same thing. True P/F for pre-clinical and then clinicals there is grading.

Even though it's P/F they monitor your class rank during preclinical years is still tracked and AOA at most schools is top 15% so preclinical years does contribute to AOA.

Hmm, I’m having lunch with an M4 on Friday. Let me ask him and we can figure this out! I definitely could be wrong, but most schools follow this format.

Where are you getting this info? Again I'm not saying that you're wrong, it just contradicts what multiple people at Pitt have told me.

I also don't quite understand the logic that since AOA is top whatever %, preclinical years have to contribute to it. At most places where preclinical years are explicitly stated to contribute to AOA, they are weighted much much less than clinical year grades.

On the MSAR it has Pitt listed as P/F for MS1&MS2 and then moves to HP/P/LP/US for MS3&MS4. Under student rankings it just says "No" which I'm assuming means they don't rank.

Pitt does give a small number of merit scholarships, ranging from 10k - 30k+ per year. Number of scholarships awarded probably just depends on fundraising. If you received merit aid, it'll be noted in the acceptance packet mailed to you this week.
Thank you mang (p.s Adventure time is the business). The acceptance packet wouldn't happen to be the financial aide email right?

What are everyone's thoughts on the timing to send LOIs if we were waitlisted? Sooner the better or wait closer to when movement occurs?

I believe the acceptance packet comes via snail mail. And I just got the financial aid email at 12:32 PM today, so check your email if you haven't already! 🙂

I got the financial aid email as well! They told us we would receive our official acceptance in regular mail so I’m guessing that is the acceptance packet.

Thank you guys, I got the financial aide email as well. I've been checking my mailbox since last year for an Emory acceptance that will never come, it's comforting to know my countless trips to the mailbox will finally pay off 😀.

Sooner the better, in my opinion. Since there's usually quite a bit of waitlist movement I feel like they'd probably have a running list of who they want to accept if a spot opens up.

How do you know if you're on the first or 2nd tier waitlist? I saw in the 2016-2017 thread people were saying there's tiers, but I couldn't find it in my application status.

Does anybody know if the financial aid email I got would contain any information about (hypothetical) merit scholarships, or would that just come in the physical packet sent later?

CCLCM as well. No grades for clinical either.

nah, merit aid goes through the dean's office or something, so it'll be sent separately. At least that's how it was a few years ago.

WAIT, how do you see your decisions? I can't find it anywhere...

Does anybody remember what they said the construction going on in the SOM building was? I remember they said it would be finished by second look day but I don't remember exactly what they were working on

Does anyone know if Pitt is responsive to additional letters of recommendation if we're on the waitlist? I'm already planning on writing a letter of interest / update, but my current boss also offered to write me a rec letter, and I'm fairly confident it would be a strong one... does anyone know if Pitt would accept such a letter (/if it's worth pursuing) and if so, how I would go about sending it in? (I'm assuming not through AMCAS at this point?)

Thanks!

Did anyone get merit aid? Also, does Pitt match scholarship offers from other schools?

Tearing out the escalators in the main hallway and replacing them with stairs, also redoing the facade on the first two floors and putting in a coffee shop/student space. The coffee shop just opened and looks great, but the "grand staircase" is taking for freaking ever and diverts everyone to the already overcrowded hospital elevators. Should definitely be done by second look but in the mean time is a maaaaajor pain. We suffer so that the next generation may benefit.

Hi!

By any chance were you waitlisted at the school before being accepted there? Or were you accepted immediately. I was unsure if a LOI carried any weight.

Thank you!

Wasn't waitlisted and am not really familiar with the AdCom process so I guess take this with a grain of salt, but an LOI certainly can't hurt and might really help. Pitt (and any school really) doesn't want to risk wasting admits on folks who they aren't certain would want to attend. So I suppose in the hypothetical scenario they're weighing admitting you against an equally ranked candidate who didn't send an LOI, you could have the upper hand.

The big glass addition to the med ed building is I think the 10+ year plan, might not even be started by the time your class would graduate.

Right. I think 2021 is when they think most of the work will be done.

Hopefully the construction isn’t completely obnoxious for all 4 years.

I'll be really impressed if it's done by then! The next phase is adding a structure on top of a space that isn't too heavily used, so hopefully it won't cause much trouble? Though the main MS1 lecture hall is in the basement of that area, so I guess it might boot y'all out of there? I dunno how construction works.
