Can anyone else who went to second look day also comment on this information please?
This is what I heard as well, in a literal sense, but I agree with others' interpretations that it is misleading for those waiting for a post-II decision (or WLed candidates). My guess is that what was meant was that they have made a number of admissions offers ten less than the intended class size. The "going to have to reject" thing was referring to all of the people who won't end up receiving interview invites. I don't think those two things should be conflated to mean the vast majority of the people who are awaiting post-interview decisions or have upcoming interviews are going to be rejected -- as pointed out, they have to accept far more students than the class size because of yield, and I think the statement at Second Look was not taking that into account. So if you're waiting for a post-interview decision, I don't think this statement is as damning as it first sounds. I think there are still a lot of offers to be made and a lot of WL movement that will come after April 30th and as other people get off other WLs and give up their Toledo spots.

I wasn't able to attend due to a schedule conflict, but how was second look day? Thoughts? Overall impression?

It was fun. We got to see more of the simulation center and talk to current students. I learned how to intubate a person which was super cool and my parents were given a campus tour. We learned more on financial aid and the new curriculum as well. I also got to ask about housing and how to find roommates.

Sounds great! Do you mind sharing more about the new curriculum?

They divided each topics into "blocks", where you get tested after each block and then a final given at the end of the year about all the blocks you had during the year. It's pass and fail for the first two years, with some kind of internal ranking. Third and fourth year you actually get grades and ranked, which is most critical for residency applications later on. Those last two years are the clinical stuff, but the new curriculum has now some clinical stuff during the first two years that you can take as electives (yay!).

Secondaries are out!
Prompts:
Briefly describe why you wish to attend medical school at The University of Toledo College of Medicine and Life Sciences. As part of this essay, please discuss, if applicable, any personal connection you may have to The University of Toledo, the UT College of Medicine and Life Sciences/former Medical College of Ohio, the city of Toledo, or the region of Northwest Ohio. (300 words)

Discuss any important aspects of your personal background, identity, or educational journey that you feel would give the Admissions Committee greater insight into your medical school application. Briefly explain how such factors have influenced your motivation to pursue a career in medicine. Examples might include: challenges you’ve overcome in accessing education; identification with a minority culture, religion, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation or gender identity; unique pathways to medical school application via professional employment, military service, family caregiving, and other circumstances. (700 words)

One of the AAMC Core Competencies for entering medical students involves cultural competence: "Demonstrates knowledge of socio-cultural factors that affect interactions and behaviors ; shows an appreciation and respect for multiple dimensions of diversity; recognizes and acts on the obligation to inform one's own judgment; engages diverse and competing perspectives as a resource for learning, citizenship, and work; recognizes and appropriately addresses bias in themselves and others; interacts effectively with people from diverse backgrounds." Discuss a specific experience from your life that you feel demonstrates your cultural competence. (700 words) @gyngyn @WedgeDawg
I am applying to medical school next cycle. Isn't a 700 word secondary long? Do people actually write to that length?

Some schools have a 1000 word limit, so 700 isn't that crazy.

Besides, it is a limit, so you can write less. However, I wouldn't advise writing less than 400 words.

There are schools with longer. Length doesn't matter. Focus on content. You can build a stronger case being concise and straight forward than being lengthy and too wordy. For one of my essays I think I only wrote 350 words.

Did you all see the email about the admissions committee being behind? Maybe lots of of peopling calling them and asking? At least we know that we will be hearing a bit later than expected.

That note sent got my stomach churning! But I did think it was a good gesture to let us know things got held up.

We were told at the "second look" thing today that there are only about 10 open spots remaining for this fall... 🙁 sorry everyone
Hi! I am a current medical student who was present for the Second Look Day. I heard what Dr. Perry stated, and I wanted to let you guys know that according to UTCOM's admission office, "there are about 10-15 interview slots left for May. Because acceptances are so dynamic, we will continue to offer acceptances and alternate list spots to everyone who has interviewed with us so far. We are experiencing some delays in final evaluations for everyone who already interviewed but hope to be caught up by the middle of May." Dr. Perry and the rest of us are so sorry for any misunderstandings but wanted to let those know that have interviews and are on the waitlist that there are more than 10 spots open for seats in the UTCOM 2022 class.

So, if we already interviewed are we either on the alternate list or accepted? Or will they be sending rejections to people who interviewed as well?

Thank you, that makes more sense!

I called them once last week and again yesterday (mostly because I wanted some sort of estimate. I understood that they were behind, but I wanted to know when I could expect to hear back.) I may be partially responsible. Also, they used an unfortunate subject line for the email that was very disappointingly misleading. Lol.

N=1, but I'm a decent but not amazing applicant that got an interview (still waiting to hear back), and my essays were 234/300 words, 348/700 and 412/700. Quality>>>>>>>>>>>>Quantity.

HAHAHA - no kidding! I was sitting in class when my phone went off. I saw the subject line and thought, well, there's the rejection because everyone says they put CONGRATULATIONS in the subject if you've been accepted. I think we've all called at least once and I don't think it's out of line. I know they're frustrated but so are we. Big decisions to be made and A LOT of emotions riding on these decisions. Hopefully they'll come out soon and we can all relax before moving to Toledo 🙂

So uhh when are we gonna get our financial aid packages??
I talked to the financial aid advisor and she told me we should get an email and an actual mail package sent to your home either the last week of April or the first week of May.

I'm really hoping for the last week of April then because I would like to see that before I make a decision. Will the email be sent to our normal email account or our UT account?

Obviously, I hope to hear back beforehand, but after thinking about it, I don't think I'd be too upset if I hear back on 4/20. It would be my first, and only acceptance, after interviewing on the Ides of March. I think it'd be an interesting story.

I wonder how many interview dates there were in February and March... It looks like there were interview days on 2/8, 2/9, 2/16, 3/2, 3/15, 3/16, 3/22, and 3/29. Could've easily been more---I just quickly scanned a few of thread pages.

Which of those interview dates was the latest to hear back already?
I interviewed 3/29, haven't heard back. They did say 4-6 weeks so still early.

I've seen at least one 3/2 interviewee on here say he was accepted.

I interviewed on 3/16 and got the notification that things are running behind schedule.

I haven't seen any that I recall from after 3/2. Those of us who interviewed on 3/15 were told 2-3 weeks and the group at the end of March were told 4-6 weeks it sounds like. I know there are interview spots through May. I ran into a friend yesterday who knows someone who got into Toledo previously and said they are notorious for taking a long time to get back with you. I got the email as well that "due to unforeseen circumstances..."....basically please stop calling 🙂

I just want to point out that tomorrow will be 5 weeks from the 3/15 interview date, so we're right in the range of when we should theoretically start hearing back (unless they're even further behind than what they've indicated.)

I hope so. I interviewed 3/2, and today is week 7 so I wouldn't get my hopes up exactly. Maybe they'll start moving a little faster though!

It seems like further down the cycle more people are getting waitlisted per interview day??

I know, I would think that since it is so late in the cycle, they would be accepting more to fill in the remaining seats. Maybe they are waiting to see if any of the accepted students decide to go somewhere else, before removing people from the waitlist?

I have an interview here on May 4th and I just wanted to know if at that point am I just interviewing for the waitlist. I'm kind of over interviews at this point and if I am just interviewing for the waitlist, I don't really see the point in attending.

I don't think so, I can't imagine that they would be interviewing just for a waitlist spot in May. If you're interested in the school, you should go. I have a friend who also has an interview in May. There isn't a lot of communication from their admissions, in fact, there has been none since that email about them being behind for notifications that came out a few weeks ago, but they are still interviewing and if you were invited and are interested, you should definitely go check out the school. They have a phenomenal facility; it's definitely worth taking a look!!

I got a similar scholarship, at least for me they sent the email to my Toledo email account and not my current email account

Did everybody so far hear back about the "Mission: Forward" scholarship? There were also a few minority- and regional-specific scholarships I was eyeing, and I'm wondering if one committee made all of the decisions for all of the different awards or if they might be coming out at different times...

Nah I only got the mission forward one. Hopefully they also consider us for some of the other ones as well, I think there are 20 total that incoming students are eligible for.
