1.) Autobiographical Statement Addendum

Your AMCAS personal statement and experiences are already on file with our office.

If your primary AMCAS application hasn’t discussed the origin and development of your motivation to be a physician including insights you’ve gained from exploring a career in medicine, and how your personal attributes would make you a good physician, please discuss those here. (250 word count)

If you’ve already written about these items, don’t repeat what you wrote. Instead, use this autobiographical statement addendum to let us know more about who you are in addition to being someone who wants to be a physician. This is another opportunity for you to express what you want the Admissions Committee to know about you.

2.) How do you see historical and structural inequities affecting the patients you have worked with and will work with, and how do you as a student and physician address these broader causes of health disparities? (250 word count)

3.) How have your experiences prepared you to be a physician? (250 word count)

4.) What perspectives or experiences do you bring that would enrich the class? (250 word count)

5.) What obstacles have you experienced and how have you overcome them? (250 word count)

Good luck to everyone applying!

I can't answer the strong ties to the state question, but here are the acceptance stats for out of region:
Acceptance Statistics | UW Medicine
Roughly a 0.4% chance.

That being said, the secondary is one of the cheapest out there. And you have an opportunity to mention your ties to the state in the secondary.

Did anyone else just get an e-mail from this school asking to fill out a mission statement essay? They said specifically that it wasn't a secondary and that they sent it after an initial review of my app. Who do they send these out to? I'm a URM and not a part of the WWAI region.

I just got the same email requesting a 250 word response as to how I fit with the mission and values. However, the text box won't let me enter any words. Anyone else having this problem? I am not URM and not part of WWAI.

Yeah I just realized that too! I can't type anything... lol

Did you guys receive this mission statement prompt AFTER initially receiving a previous email or not stating that your app is undergoing a preliminary review?

Hmmm. UW auto-screens, so I don't know whether the email indicates my app has been auto-screened or not...

I'm 3.52 / 514, so I can't imagine I'd make it through an auto-screen, though I have a 4.0 post-bacc and stellar ECs.
Why exactly don't you think you'd make it through an auto-screen? Those are pretty decent stats and would get you through most autoscreens...? Like I can't tell if you're being serious

I got one, but it said they would like me to submit this short essay because of my experiences (doesn't say anything about GPA/MCAT). Not within their region, and not URM.

I thought my GPA was too low, or at least everyone has made me feel that way.

I got the same email. So is this a good thing? Seems really strange, never heard of it before.

Did you fill out the "preliminary" app as well? I don't get what they're looking for with the "supplement" to my AMCAS personal comments...
oh my bad yea i was talking about the "preliminary" app. i agree it looks like its the same **** as the primary

This is 100% speculation, but maybe they ask for the mission statement from people who are right on the edge of some stats-based autoscreen for OOR applicants? So rather than just sending or not sending you a secondary based solely on stats, they give you a chance to tell them a little bit more about why you'd be a good fit?

lol well good to know I'm on the edge of getting rejected already

I mean same, man. Who knows? I'm just a neurotic premed who wants to think that there's total logic behind everything adcoms do

I just submitted this and got the following e-mail "Thank you for submitting your essay stating how you meet the mission of the University of Washington School of Medicine. We will now complete an additional review of your application to determine if we would like you to submit a secondary application." It seems kind of odd to me that a 519/3.84 would be on the cusp of being screened out, but UW is notorious for being hard on OOS so maybe they are looking for a 522/3.9...

If you read their mission, it says OOR applicants will be considered if they are disadvantaged or have exceptional service records. I don't think they care about the mcat.

for mstp applicants this is the order of events: amcas primary -> preliminary mstp app -> supplementary mstp app.

Can someone post the secondaries for this year?

Here are the prompts for last year straight from the 2016-2017 forum.

1. Autobiographical Statement Addendum

You must submit a brief autobiographical statement. It should describe the origin and development of your motivation to be a physician, your prior experiences in healthcare, steps taken to explore a career in medicine, your eventual goals as a physician, and other issues of importance. The Personal Comments section of the AMCAS application may be used to satisfy this requirement, or an additional autobiography may be submitted with your supplemental materials. Your AMCAS personal statement will already be on file with our office. 250 words

2. How do your experiences match the mission and values of the University of Washington School of Medicine? 250 words

3. How have your experiences prepared you to be a physician? 250 words

4. What perspectives or experiences do you bring that would enrich the class? 250 words

5. What obstacles have you experienced and how have you overcome them? 250 words

The questions are on this site: The Applications | UW Medicine. It seems like there's one new question?

  • How have your experiences prepared you to be a physician?
  • What perspectives or experiences do you bring that would enrich the class?
  • What obstacles have you experienced and how have you overcome them?
  • How do you see historical and structural inequities affecting the patients you have worked with and will work with, and how do you as a student and physician address these broader causes of health disparities?

Checking in-this is my dream school!
We'll be in this for a while, but hope its worth it at the end!!! Go huskies!

Received MSTP secondary last night. Submitted my preliminary on 7/6.

Seems to me the mission statement is for anyone who is not from the WWAMI region. Essentially not fitting their mission statement.

I am OOR and received the preliminary screen with the mission and values prompt. Today I received an email rejection saying I didn't meet the requirements. 3.62/514. Good luck everyone!!

With those stats you'll get in somewhere!
Best of luck!

When did you turn in the mission statement?

Did you receive a second email telling you to submit a mission statement? I've only gotten an email saying I'd be under "preliminary review in the near future". I'm OOR 3.6/515

I received the mission statement email 6 days ago and submitted 3 days ago!

Aaaaand rejected lol. First one of the cycle. Out-of-region. Oh well good luck y'all

I've always wanted to do this @gyngyn :

anyone else got a secondary for MSTP yet? or anyone know how tough the screening is for MSTP?

Anyone out of the region make it through to the secondary? How long did it take them to respond?
