2017-2018 University of Washington

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Is it true that UW does not even start looking at applications from non-Washington WWAMI states (Wyoming, Alaska, Montana, and Idaho) until December? The interviews for those students are each held in their respective states on specific dates in late January and February. I heard it is not rolling admissions for those states. They wait until all the aps are in and then start reviewing them after the December 1st deadline.

I don't think this is true. I applied as a WWAMI here last year and received an II in August. Unfortunately didn't get it but I am hopeful this year! Although they could have changed their approach this year. Good Luck!

Complete 8/21 after a 4 week residency verification and getting really restless  IS + one of my top choice schools.

Congrats to everyone with IIs so far!!

II!! completed mid august. incredibly, incredibly relieved.

This may seem like a weird question perhaps, but if you get an interview here, does that mean you are fairly close to an acceptance, as long as you dont blow your interview? Or not necessarily? I am not sure if there are any actual washington students on this forum or not.

To answer your question, this is not true. I would say that anyone who gets an interview is a very strong applicant, and everyone in my group last year honestly seemed like very outgoing and exceptional people. Dont take the interview for granted, you have to impress them alot. Plus many many people are reapplicants and they have the upper hand on you already (as long as they have improved)

IS resident here. Spokanistan. They interview only 100 applicants for 60 seats. I don't remember what Seattle is, but it's much more competitive (interviewed:accepted ratio) to get accepted if you interview there. Plus Spokane is better weather and a lot cheaper cost of living. Maybe you won't be able to live out your Grey's Anatomy fantasy, but you'll only be there for the first two years anyway. 😛

I dont think this is entirely true. They interview 120 for 45 ish spots in spokane and the rest are TRUST. Not necessarily better odds than seattle

OK. I was just going off what they said at the UW information forum and on the website. Maybe things have changed since then.

I spoke with a 2nd year in the Spokane campus and they said that they actually put Seattle as their preference site initially but were placed in Spokane along with a couple other folks. Also they mentioned that after acceptance, you are asked again to mark your preference site and give a short blurb as to why if you have any particular reason (family, connections, familiarity with the area, etc.).

Both of these factors combined seems to indicate that there really honestly isn't a particular benefit to choosing one site vs another for your preference, but take that with a grain of salt since this is of course anecdotal and n=1.
OK. Well your information is probably better than mine. I wasn't told directly by anyone that Spokane was more competitive. Just tried to reason it out on my own based on the numbers when deciding on where to put. TRUST numbers aren't a factor I thought about.

I received actual date email on Tuesday. I submitted late July and got the invite late August. There are 3 dates in the third week of October

This school is flat out discriminatory. They literally discriminate AGAINST you if you come from a "privileged" socioeconomic background and at the SAME TIME discriminate by admitting MANY more whites per capita than any other race. The UWSOM is a flawed school with an even worse admissions committee, and they are hypocritical at best to call themselves diverse while making pledges to inclusiveness and unity.
You have like 150 other schools to apply to... life is too short to be so bitter...

The school's mission is to serve the population of Washington, not individual applicants.

I glanced at your post history; this is your 3rd cycle and you still have a sense of arrogance and entitlement that most people would've learned from. Evidently, UW probably saw through this.

A) I see no facts presented.

B) You're arrogance is seen through your tone; you clearly feel you should've been selected and are proclaiming "discrimination" when you things don't go your way. Otherwise, there would've been no reason to spend the energy to complain on an internet forum.

C) There are thousands of applicants, many of who are well qualified and diverse. Plus there's more to medical school applications than just "diversity and inclusion".

I'm pretty done with this tbh

Settle down, you do not have the power to silence me. Here are some facts from MSAR for the class matriculating in 2016:

212 whites
45 asian
10 blacks
14 hispanic
4 american indian
1 native hawaiian
9 other

This is purely laughable. 87% white and Asian. For one example, Washington state is 28% latino. Yeah, real diverse UW.

In addition, I have it from the Dean of Admissions that UW makes it easier for people of lower socioeconomic status to gain acceptance and that they purposely make it more difficult just because you were blessed to be born into a well off family. DISCRIMINATION
This poster is hilarious.

For those of you who are curious: once you take into account the number of seats assigned to the "WAMI" states and the demographics of each of those states, the "expected" number of white matriculants comes out to 204. MSAR reports a total of 212 white matriculants.

EDIT: I'd like to clarify that the "204" I came up with completely ignores the 16 students that were admitted from OOR (not residents of the WWAMI states).

Well, if you are interested in leveling the playing field by increasing diversity, why not include more students with lower SES? From all accounts incoming medical students are by far predominantly from well-off families, even at UW. Unless a person from a rich family has shown a clear interest in the underserved (by actually doing something, not lip service), how can they possibly connect with UW's mission? Anyone can write in their application that they care about rural/underserved. What experiences do they have to actually show they care or understand? These doctors will have a really tough time relating with patients.

This is the correct answer. Look at what each of the states applying represent. If there is diversity coming from the Wyoming, Alaska, Montana, Idaho class I never saw it. It’s just the demographics of being an instate school to states without diversity. You would literally have to discriminate to get different race representation from those states.

rejected post-mission statement, OOS no ties. Best of luck to anyone still in the running 🙂

For those that got II earlier, how long did it take for them to send an e-mail to you with the available dates? I have to be out of the country in December and am crossing my fingers that the dates don't fall during that time. I let them know about this in my secondary so hopefully it's taken into consideration.

It was a bit over 2 weeks for me

Does anyone know when they will send out interview invites for the Spokane interviews in November?

do you mean the exact dates? Or the actual invitations to interview? The dates are on their website and they have already sent interview invites for spokane.

Congratulations! And good luck with your interview! May I ask when your secondary app was complete?

They already sent out interview invites for Spokane but said that exact dates will be sent out 3 weeks before (probably around the end of the month).

Has anyone emailed admissions to see where they are in the Oct-March timeline? I'm tempted to walk over to the UWSOM office and ask :/

II today! Montana resident for the WWAMI program. 512 MCAT, 3.96 gpa. Submitted August 14, complete September 5 (waiting for MCAT and residency verification)

Specific interview dates for Spokane II came through today via my email. Available to schedule through the portal. Lots of lunch options.
