II invite just now. I am in full on shock! I was initially rejected pre-secondary way back when. How amazing! U Washington would be an absolute dream. I am beyond humbled.

OOR, URM, LM 64, complete 10/07. Holy ****! :soexcited:😍

Congrats! Does "way back when" mean last cycle, or years ago? Did you have a meeting with them and they told you what you could do to improve your application?

One of my friends got the call about their acceptance this last Wednesday. I still have not got an admission decision yet. My friend and I did not have the same excom member which may have been the reason why...
when did your friend interview?

By "way back when" I mean beginning of August this cycle. I am not a re-applicant.

Wait a minute. They rejected you pre-secondary, and then they reconsidered and sent you a secondary invitation and then gave you an interview invite all in the same cycle? How did that happen? Did you petition admissions for reconsideration?

Rejected post-II after the SUC email. I'm OOR. I did like the school a lot, though I will admit it was far too left-leaning for me, in my honest opinion, so perhaps it was for the better. Wishing luck to everyone else here!

Did you interview 10/9?

Placed into the 'continued consideration' pool. I am OOR. Does anyone know what are the chances of acceptance from this pool?

Yes, exactly. I was rejected pre-secondary in early August, replied to the rejection email stating that I believed the UW screening process inherently put me at a disadvantage (you can read more about how they screen if you search the thread), they ultimately agreed, sent me the mission statement essay, then the secondary invite, and then boom goes the dynamite.

That's pretty cool. First time I've heard of that happening. What, specifically, about the screening process do you feel put you at a disadvantage? I know that for out of region applicants, they do not consider letters of recommendation during the initial screen and you have to fill out a mission statement first.

I remember reading that if you have an upward trend in your GPA, especially with a postbac, the way they prescreen by GPA (considering only years 1-3 of undergrad) can disfavor nontrad applicants and they recommend reaching out if you believe you were improperly screened. Perhaps this happened? Congrats OP!
Yup that's pretty much my situation. Thank you! Good luck to everyone too!

Interviewed 11/8, got the SUC email yesterday evening. Waiting game continues

I have a question for those of you from the non-Washington WWAMI states. Does UW actually screen applicants and award interview invites on a competitive basis for those of us from the other 4 states, or do they pretty much just interview anybody who meets the residency requirements and submits a secondary? Do any of you who go to school in these states know people who have applied and did not get an interview?

I got an II here from one of the non-Washington WWAMI states and, while this would ordinarily be grounds for excitement, I'm pretty cynical. One of my metrics is way low for this school (or any school, for that matter), so I can't help but think that this is pretty meaningless. I feel like I'm not actually going to be interviewing for a seat in the class.

Anybody know what an II from Wyoming, Idaho, Montana, or Alaska means at this school?

It sounds like you're not too interested in UW. The screening process is as follows: a group of UW "screeners" looks at an application. Those screeners may be located in any of the WWAMI states, but most commonly are in Washington. If enough screeners find your application suitable, then you receive an II. If your application falls below criteria (metrics (ie GPA/MCAT) and required shadowing) and the screeners don't think you will be a competitive candidate, then they "reject you." That means the committee doesn't want to waste your money/time coming to an interview where you are highly likely to not be competitive. If you receive an II, then the screeners felt you had some redeeming quality or qualities to overcome your negative that you referenced. Basically, if you get an II in a WWAMI state, you have as good a chance at acceptance as the next interviewee. The interview is the make or break deal.

The interview is the make or break deal.

Oh, I know what the formal process is that they describe on their website. I just think it might be a little...relaxed for the other states.

So, is the interview really the exclusive determinant as to whether you get in or not once you make it to that point?

My first acceptance letter!! I literally scream cried :cat:
Good luck to everyone still in the running!
Also, is there a difference between "tentative acceptance" vs "firm acceptance" in terms of holding your acceptance? Is one legally binding?

The difference is just that you are either taking the offer and keeping it, or you are taking it for now but will go to another school if accepted. Nothing legally binding or would make them rescind the acceptance is hidden in there. It is more for planning purposes for the school on how many acceptances and (when they make it) waitlist people they can expect to take.

For me, when I was accepted, I said firm and withdrew from all the other acceptances/applications I had with other schools. I had a friend who was also accepted who put tentative because he was accepted to Harvard and was debating the pros and cons of each.

Just be honest here. It doesn’t hurt you.

I got an interview from UW on October and had to travel from a long distance to get there! After the interview I wasn't very impressed with the school and their approach to medicine. I also got a pretty bad vibe from those interviewing me. They couldn't possibly make this interview more stressful with the setting and method of asking the questions. The interview wasn't a conversation unlike other schools that I've interviewed at.So right after the interview I knew that's the wrong MD school for me. I was debating whether to withdraw my application or not, but got rejected 10 days after receiving an email saying I had to wait till March for their final decision! I'm glad that I didn't end up waiting till March for the rejection. The truth is every rejection hurts a little bit, but some are better than others.

Rejected post interview.
It was fun guys! Congrats to all the acceptees, and hopefully see you soon next year 🙂
SDN family, ammirite

Sorry to hear that man, hoping the best for you for the rest of the application season! 🙂

Not really yet, I'm bracing myself for having to apply for a third time.

Hey,

I'm a current 2nd year student at UWSOM. I'd be happy to take a quick look at your app to see if there are any glaring red flags... It sucks to be a position where there isn't necessarily a clear path improvement.

Cheers,
Optik

Sorry to hear that 🙁 you have a great attitude about it though! I feel underqualified for my interview invite and I feel like I am going to be overly nervous during the interview as a result. Have you met with any advisors or have an idea of what went wrong?

Thank you so much, I'd really appreciate that. Is there a way I can message/email you directly?

I feel the same way. I have an interview invite here and it will most likely be my only one this cycle. I feel like I am going to be rejected even with a great interview, and that I am not actually interviewing for a seat in the class.

+1 to this, I have an II here but I honestly did not expect to get one even though I am a WA resident (haven't lived in WA for the past 5 years and was rejected pre-II last year). I am not particularly hopeful that my II will turn into an acceptance.

Congrats to the recent acceptances!
And best wishes to those of you getting ready to interview.

I, too, will be interviewing in a couple weeks, and I have a question for those that have interviewed already -- is the tour across the UW campus? Or is it just in the Health Science buildings and hospital? I'm trying to decide how warm (and water repellent) of a jacket I need to bring. Thanks!

Interviewing here tomorrow. This is my top choice school and I am hoping an II will turn into an acceptance. I have had one other II and this was a MMI style so I am hoping that the traditional interview style will not be too intimidating.

It's just the hospital and health sciences building. You only go outside briefly to walk to the South campus building behind HSB. Good luck, you will do great!

They have three people interviewing you at once so that can be intimidating, but just remember that they only want to get to know you better as a person and your motivations. No trick questions were asked and the patient simulation goes by fast. As was already stated, you've prepared for this your entire life! You'll do great!!

Man it is so cool seeing so many people getting good news this week! Congrats to you all!

Has anybody heard back regarding January Spokane interview dates? I'm tempted to call and ask, I feel like they have to tell us soon!

Hi everyone, I recently interviewed at Seattle and I felt like my interview went really poorly... Can anyone speak to how that is viewed by the EXCOM? I'm aware they consider the overall application, secondary, and interview performance, but how heavy is that weighted?

The interview is huge at Washington. While not everyone who does well at the interview will get in, nobody who does poorly will. Why do you think it didn't go well?

Was extremely flustered and the questions they asked me I wasn't prepared for. That, and the fact that I messed up on the patient scenario case... @BABSstudent can I PM you privately about the details and let me know your honest opinion? I almost wanted to just cry after my interview. I interviewed last year, got rejected, and still felt like that interview went better than this one.

What types of questions did they ask that you weren't prepared for? Things regarding policy? Ethics type questions? Do you feel that the reason you blew the patient scenario is mainly because of nerves, or did you honestly not know how to handle it?

what about students who interview “average-ly”?

For what it's worth, I cried after my interview because I thought it went so poorly and then got the acceptance phone call only two days later. You are probably being too harsh on yourself. It's not worth it to pick yourself apart and seed self-doubt that will make you nervous going into other interviews!

I've heard it said that the UW interview is among the harshest out there, so if you can handle it then it's all downhill from there as far as the rest of your interviews go.

It was definitely the hardest of the ones I've attended so far, but worked out so I can't complain! They really pick at every tiny little detail of your application and the whole 3 on 1 thing is not at all calming. It all goes by really fast too which makes it easy for you to start questioning yourself afterwards.
