2017-2018 University of Washington

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
So they said that we should expect an update of some sort within a month and this is the neurotic part of me realizing it's a little over a month since my interview date. This is all fine n normal right? Anyone else in the same boat? I'm kinda just expecting an SUC this month now
I feel that if they indicated that you will hear something in a month then it's appropriate to check-in with an email.

They said as much in my interview. My SUC email came almost a month to the day after my interview.

Rejected post-II 🙁 super bummed...

In hindsight, perhaps I shouldn’t have picked Spokane, I just didn’t feel like I “fit” there...almost wish I could ask to re-interview in Seattle instead.

Regardless, good luck to the rest of you still waiting and congrats to those who got into this amazing school!

I’m sorry! Rejections are tough 🙁 Can I ask what you mean by the “fit” there? Does Seattle have something they don’t?

Best of luck to you!

I'm sorry to hear that 🙁 Best of luck with your other schools. What about your interview made you feel like it wasn't a good fit? I'm scared now. The more days that go by the more I feel worse about my interview...

This is such a cruel and unforgiving process. No one should have to endure this.

UWSOM is going through LCME accreditation this winter and keep public records of their committee meetings. Something stood out to me from a recent meeting, and I wondered if any current students (especially anybody in the patient care phase, and especially anybody who identifies as a woman) was willing to comment on their own experiences:

Student Mistreatment- UW SoM has some of the highest reported mistreatment data in the country (90% range). Dr. Ramsey and others are strategizing about next steps and will be in touch with Clerkship Directors. Comments regarding public humiliation and sexism and gender are the top problems presented. LCME site visitors will be looking for outcomes.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think the interview location necessarily means you would be placed at that location. I believe all applicants are competing for the same 140 spots whether their interview is in Spokane or Seattle.

Those who interview in Spokane can go only to Spokane and are considered a cohort.those who interview in Seattle generally go to Seattle and in rare cases to Spokane.

My theory here is that other schools/students are under-reporting the mistreatment. UW students don't really have the same tolerance for this kind of BS. Just guessing though.

Which meeting was that topic discussed?

I read through the monthly minutes that were posted (back to Sept 2016) and couldn’t find this quote or even any discussion of this topic.

Honestly, I was impressed with the thoughtful process of this committee and how much student input is valued.

Inb4 none of us can know and it’s completely futile to wonder... but we also know that anxiety is not calmed by logic!

I have a hunch that there is an EXCOM meeting today or tomorrow. The only acceptance we’ve seen here on SDN this month was @KingCounty, and there didn’t seem to be the rest of the normal flurry after an EXCOM meeting. (In another one of my moments of neurotic “research”, I found some document that was like guidelines/bylaws for the EXCOM, and I read that exceptional IS candidates can be accepted through a virtual process if a certain number of EXCOMers electronically agree to accept, so they don’t need to be discussed at a full meeting and get a faster decision.) Someone else mentioned that last year there were no December acceptances, but there was still some activity around December 19.

Also, last year there was a “third Thursday of the month” theory for the meetings. That would be consistent with the flood of decisions we saw Nov 17.

Ugh, this anxiety seriously is keeping me from getting my normal work done!

Anxiously awaiting some sort of update....any reason to call them if it's been a little over a month or just let it be?

I (selfishly) agree because then you can let us all know what they say 😉

Just tried calling them for the team, but the woman at the office who picked up said she wasn't sure but transferred me directly to admissions because she thought a few of them were still in the office but then the call rang until voicemail </3

the waiting continues. I wonder if we can expect any word tomorrow even if it is a weekend

Looks like we probably will hear from them after the holidays like last year. Enjoy your time with your folks in the mean time. Happy holidays!

Went back for people who are interested -- this is not... like... how I normally spend my time.

September 2017 in the curriculum committee -- under LCME Update: http://blogs.uw.edu/somcurr4/files/2016/10/CC_MM9.11.17-draft.pdf
One out of two students are saying that they encountered mistreatment. We continue to exceed the national average to the point in which we are above the 90th percentile. All areas in which we were hoping to improve, we did not. Nationally, more of our students are reporting mistreatment.
The quote I posted before is from August 2017 in the patient care committee, also under LCME: http://blogs.uw.edu/somcurr4/files/2016/10/PCC_MM-8.21.17-Final.pdf

🙂

Thank you for making the extra effort. I am always skeptical of information posted on the internet - prefer to have more data to back it up.

Thanks again.

Quick question but what resources are people using to study for the interview in terms of reading up on recent healthcare policies for WA state specifically? I'm using the UW bioethics website to study for ethics-related questions but I've also heard that the interviewers tend to ask questions about current healthcare policies.

Maybe look for big health headlines in the Seattle Times? I wasn't asked any WA state healthcare related questions, but it would have been reasonable if they did. They don't expect you to be an expert but it probably looks good to appear aware of big picture ideas in health

Thanks for chiming in on this everyone, I think it was a valuable discussion that was helpful in making my decision. I think I'll email Paul Ramsey to see what the administrators are doing in response. I would like to encourage everyone who has an interest in going to UW to do so as well! Whether it's about race, gender, or anything else, I want to be confident that my school would take their students' concerns seriously. I'll post on here what his response is!

Did Dr. Ramsey write you back?

Can anyone comment on how long the interview day is? My interview is scheduled for 3PM and I'm wondering if I can make it to sea-tac airport for a 6:30PM flight.

The lunch and tour is before your interview. The interview is 30min, so you'll be done at 3:30. After that you are not obliged to stay, although you can choose to attend their lectures. If you leave at 3:30, you will catch that 6:30 flight.
To make sure you can check with adcom. They are very nice.

Amazing! Thank you!

To follow up on that, I was planning to Uber my way to the airport but I'm concerned about traffic around that time. Would you recommend driving or public transport?

I'd suggest riding the link rail from the airport to the UW station. It is super convenient ~45mins-1hr

I second the light rail train option - the UW train station is right across Montlake Blvd from the medical center and drops you off beside the airport. It’s convenient & cheap. I use Seattle’s mass transit all the time - rode the bus to my interview.

Since you are an afternoon interview, you can leave right after your interview (and right after doing the short feedback survey). Interviews seem to be right around 30 minutes based on my interview day. You could probably leave the building by 3:45 or 4pm. The light rail is a few blocks away from the medical center (5-10 min walk) and goes straight to SeaTac, and times are pretty consistent since it avoids traffic. It won't let me link the timetables, but if you search Link Light Rail Sound Transit in google it should come right up.

I don't fly enough to know how long it takes to get through the airport though. But you should be able to get to the airport before 5 if all goes as planned.

edit: somehow didn't see previous replies, sorry for redundancy

If you have an afternoon interview, then you can leave right after you finished. You will make your flight. I had another interviewee who interviewed last and made it to the airport through using the link light rail

Edit: Oops. Sorry for the redundancy too

Congratulations on your acceptance! And thank you for your well wishes. Best wishes for you as well on this crazy, wonderful journey.

I'm pretty sure it's just for those IS! It said regardless of admission, I don't think it means anything except a reminder for the fafsa.

Thanks for the insight! I also do worry for financial aid and how to go about it too since I am OOR

Did anyone receive a scholarship application from the office of financial aid in a separate email from the FAFSA one today? Hoping I can take this as a good sign!
