2018-2019 Drexel University

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I know the invitation for second look says casual, but how casual are you all going? Specifically women. I was leaning toward black jeans and a nice top, but would dark wash denim jeans be okay? Or should I err on the side of a skirt?

Initial package was just loan info, no scholarships. Few weeks ago I got an email from Drexel saying I had a revised financial aid package and I saw the DUCOM scholarship.
Did you fill out the scholarship application before the award? Just found out about it. Other schools I applied to awarded aid without separate app so I completely forgot to make sure if that’s the case for Drexel. Deadline has passed.

so, is anyone else worried about Hahnemann hospital, or its just me? I do not know what to think of it.
It is concerning, a few current students are worried. The hospital laid off nurses, administrative staff, and other non-physician roles. This means that, at least for now, the graduate medical education and the MS3/MS4 rotations have not been affected and probably won't be for another year or two.

The problem is that we can't predict what will happen, hospitals can turn around given two or three years. The government could get involved, there could be a wealthy member of the community that donates. Just too many factors to consider.

One thing to consider is that while Hahnemann probably has the most rotation spots in one clinical setting, it is not the majority of MS3/MS4 rotation spots. The new campus being built with the Tower Health partnership potentially expands rotation slots, and could compensate if Hahnemann does have to decrease its rotations or close.

Could any of this have an effect on residency programs available at Hahnemann? I know having home programs during interview season is a big plus for students.

Do you know when they will finish building it ?

Like I said, graduate medical education (residencies, fellowships, etc.) has not been affected yet. I don't think anyone can estimate if or when it will be. It depends on the hospital board's priorities and situation specific circumstances.
Private and public institutions, as well the government (NIH, Medicare, etc.) fund hospitals based on how many residency spots they have. If the problem the hospital is facing is about money, then I imagine they aren't going to reduce cash flow by reducing residency spots.

Do you know when they will finish building it ?
First class of students is slated to start there in 2020. Rumor is that Tower health initiated this partnership mainly because they want to eventually start their own medical school. Thats a long term process, which is usually preceded by having strong residency programs in place. Its not far-fetched to imagine that after a DUCOM med school campus, they'll focus on residency programs.

I want to hope that because they aren't just straight up waitlisting every deferred applicant all at once that they're actually going over us and that there is hope of an acceptance, but I have yet to see any deferred people getting accepted in the past week and a half so not looking great...

I was planning on just wearing dark wash jeans, a nice shirt, and flats!

Just as an update on this, Drexel released this official statement about the situation:

"Drexel University College of Medicine continues to have an important academic affiliation and collaborative relationship with Hahnemann University Hospital, which is owned by American Academic Health System (AAHS). Although Hahnemann is a key resource for the clinical education of Drexel's medical students, the College of Medicine has academic affiliations with more than 20 clinical training sites. Drexel faculty continue their commitment to providing the best possible training for resident physicians employed by AAHS.

Drexel cannot comment on the business affairs of AAHS, as Drexel's financial and business operations are independent of the hospital. It is Drexel's intention to maintain its current level of patient care and educational activities at the hospital.

The College of Medicine's focus is always on the best interests of its patients, students, faculty and staff."

Made me feel a little better they're at least acknowledging it.
