Got an email to create an account and complete the secondary, however their link was not working for me...

Secondary Received:

A. Tell us about constructive criticism you have received, or a personal challenge you have experienced, that you found particularly impactful. Please describe how that experience has advanced your development as a future physician thought leader. (600 words, 400 word min)

B. Explain how interactions with people who are different from you have shaped your world view and relate how you would enrich the VTC community. (600 words, 400 word min)

C. What, in your opinion, makes the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine different, and why is that important to you? (600 words, 400 word min)

I recommend typing the URL into your browser, the hyperlink doesn't work

How did you guys get the prompt? The link to create an account isn't working for me

EDIT: copy the URL without the https://

I previously interviewed at VTC in August 2016 for the 2017 cycle. when asked what year I interviewed, do I put the application cycle year or the year I actually interviewed?

Haven't received a secondary yet but these word limits/minimums are BRUTAL!!

I would put the year that you interviewed

Didn't realize they required Calc, does anyone know how stringent they are on this requirement?

damn, I didn't realize this either. this could be a problem. have only taken algebra, statistics, general math. do they send a secondary to everyone or just people who meet the pre-requisite requirements?

any idea what "advanced your development as a future physician thought leader." means? do they mean changes to how physicians think and care for people? or did they mean future physician AND thought leader?

Hey all, I interviewed here and got waitlisted last cycle. I did receive admissions counselling as well, and I can say that the only feedback for improvement they were able to give was to do more research - I have 250 hours of research - and they said that was less than their typical matriculant. Feel free to PM me with any questions about the secondaries, interviews, etc!

This question is for you or anyone else on this thread might have knowledge of this.

Often times, people on this site (in the WAMC areas usually) say that non-Virginians shouldn't apply to VTC because they have a in-state preference and it would be low yield. Obviously the MSAR data show ~5% interview rate for OOS people which is really low.

Does VTC show preferences within the OOS group? Like regional preference? Obviously they love research and probably don't interview the top 20 research applicants (yield protection). But what about someone OOS that has an extensive research background, is familiar with the area that VTC is in, and has the stats just above the median?

Just trying to get an idea on my competitiveness.

So also according to MSAR, they offered acceptances to twice as many OOS-ers than those who are VA residents. I think you know the answer to that last question 😛

I went to the first round of interviews and from the tour bus - we went around and said where we were from - there were mostly in-state people at the interview but I think I remember people from New York, New Jersey, Maryland, and North Carolina. Obviously, there were probably more than that too, but my memory fails me.

It's referring to their research curriculum. Future physician thought leader equates to a physician that applies the lessons of critical thinking, data analysis, etc. that they learned from research in the treatment of their patients. Being able to think on your feet/outside of the box can save the life of a patient, and VTC teaches its students not only the medical knowledge they need but also to cultivate and rely on your intellectual curiosity throughout your career.

oh dang I just found references to "physician thought leaders" all over VTC web pages. I didn't know what that term was until now. looks like it'll be tough for me to connect my challenge to being a physician that does research

SadAsian, did they tell you that during the interview? I get the impression that they’re talking more about the authority that physicians have on patients lives and about being well rounded leaders in general. Maybe I am misreading though.

Edit: They do say that they foster that through discovery and inquiry though so I was probably wrong.

Hopefully they are sending their secondaries out in waves?

Finally completed this beast of a secondary, immediately marked complete upon submission.

I know this secondary is challenging, but it REALLY helped me with other topics because it made me dig deep. I was able to shorten the content/use my epiphanies on various other apps. You guys got this!!

can anyone elaborate on the question, " Tell us about the constructive criticism you have received, or a personal challenge you have experienced, that you found particularly impactful. Please describe how that experience has advanced your development as a future physician thought leader."

I understand the future-physician thought leader is grounded in research, inquiry, and discovery but connecting personal challenges to it are giving me trouble

I talked about how I wrote what I thought was a lit review and did it all wrong and used it as a learning experience

So Im not sure if it qualifies as research but I collect medical data from underserved patients and created a chart through a non-profit org. with those data, we implement preventative care for those patients. would that count as a challenge I saw and tackled through research?

Directly from their website:

The PTLCs are faculty led student communities that provide an administrative structure through which students can experience individualized personal, academic, and career advising and mentoring that fosters personal and professional growth. Additionally, it is intended that these communities teach and model professionalism, enhance connectivity and collaboration both between students and faculty as well as among classes, and promote student wellness.

So Im guessing PTLs are students that are willing to work well with others to foster growth?

The qualities that distinguish influential thought leaders include:

  • Intelligence, expertise and credibility
  • Observant, curious and passionate about their field
  • Pursue compelling ideas and innovative perspectives
  • Contribute intellectual value and insight
  • Frequently share ideas and engage audiences

Doesnt indicate about research per se....

Were most of yall's essays just around 400 or reaching 600? Most of mine were super close to the limit and was wondering if I was the only one writing too much lol.

Like all three of mine were around 450

Oops, I was close to 600 for each one, too! This was one of my first secondaries submitted, so this was my "long-form" diversity essay and I just trimmed it down for other schools. I'm sure it's fine, it's under their word limit so I suppose it can't really be too much!

Good to hear I am not alone. I am probably just being slightly neurotic (ITS STARTING GUYS) lol. I will say I thoroughly enjoyed writing the Why VTC cause the school really is unique than most of the other schools in the country (as opposed to those Why X essays from low-yield schools that all seem the same lol).

Yeah, exactly!! So nice to have an essay that I could go full-tilt "listen guys, I f-ing LOVE research and y'all are into that too"

Haha, yep. Not too many schools LOVE research but are in the stats range that VTC is in (though I could definitely see those numbers increase at any time).

congrats guys! looks like I'm set for a rejection. I really liked this school too

Just no II yet, but I was complete on the first day they sent secondaries which was close to a month ago.

I mean not getting a II on the first wave.
I really think it is still early! The only thing I would say is just stay positive, and be happy you have two invites already, even though it is still early! (congrats on those, btw.)

Thanks! I just really liked this school since they are a school with a strong research focus that doesn't require very high stats so it feels bad not being in the first wave. Good luck on your cycle 🙂
