2018-2019 Virginia Tech Carilion

just submitted my secondary. hope it's not too late! VTC does sound like an amazing school 🤣

Guys, I was wondering if anyone had any insight about VTC's OOS acceptances for this year.
After the hecticness of getting my secondaries out this past month, I came across the fact that VTC officially integrated into Virginia Tech as of July 2018.

Does this mean that VTC is no longer a private university and will heavily favor in-state applicants starting this cycle?

What are fellow females thinking about wearing to the reception the night before?

I think last year the first round of rejections came in november. so it'll most likely be radio silence until then for those on the chopping block. but also, some people got IIs in december despite submitting in july. who knows

Do you think it's worth applying to this school if I'm not super into research, and haven't pursued research outside of classroom projects? I'm a NC resident, but my family is from Virginia, and I love the area, but I'm not sure if they will consider a non research focused applicant.

Unfortunately I don't think so.

This is coming from an n=1 but if you are not that into research and haven't had that much exposure to it in the past, why would you want to apply to a school that blends it into practically every component of the curriculum? I feel like you would be miserable at such a research-heavy school that has requirements and such in that area if you don't like research or want to pursue it.

And that isn't even considering the fact that pretty much every matriculant has had "considerable research experience" or "some research experience" (probably mostly in the former too!). It is also pretty late in the application cycle and you would be an OOS applicant (I'm from NC too!).

Did anyone at interview catch when they would make the October acceptance announcements? Will it be right on October 15th?

They said they would make calls on 10/16. Don't quote me, but I believe Dr. Prusakowski's powerpoint said they're only offering acceptances on 4 dates (October, December, February, March - as many schools seem to).

Yeah I do remember that-- I just didn't remember her saying a specific date for in October. You remember her saying the 16th?

She definitely referenced 10/16, but that could be because that is the first day AMCAS allows decisions to be released. I thought they said that day or at least week because that date stuck in my memory (and initiated a countdown). You have me second guessing now, though...

People got calls on 10/16 last year according to the 2017-2018 thread

First day is 10/15 per amcas
I've got my numbers crossed.. For clarification, I called and Monica said they will start making personal calls 10/17, which will continue throughout that week (the 10/17 start was clear, but it ambiguously seems it takes a couple days for them to get through all the calls).

Just got the R! I thought it was nice that they put the reason why I didn’t get an interview. OOS complete 7/21 ish

Rejected, IS. Apparently 2 and a half years of research was not enough haha. Oh well best of luck to everyone!

got the R as well. not sure how much weight these hold, because i had 6 or so months of research (granted i was doing it basically like a full time job so i had quite a few hours). But my reasoning was not enough medical experiences. 160 clinical volunteering and 50 shadowing for reference.

Hell I even had a published paper to back my research up. Maybe they require more I guess.

How is your clinical exposure though? Did they say in your email that the reason for the rejection was insufficient research?

Yeah, they said I didn't do enough research in the email, and that was the only thing mentioned.

I wonder how they are scoring research experiences. What factors of one's research entry weigh the most?

Hours spent as a lab assistant without much input to methodology?
Evidence of independent research work - i.e. designing the hypothesis/experiments yourself?
1st author vs 5th author?

Yeah, they said I didn't do enough research in the email, and that was the only thing mentioned.

I HIGHLY doubt that their reasons for rejection (sucks to hear but hang in there!) would be that clean, cut, and dry and be explained using short snippets on an email. They probably do that to be nice and provide some input into applicants but its probably a combination of factors that result in certain candidates being chosen over others.

And your research appears to be more than sufficient for the school! It is probably just a factor of things.
