2019-2020 Mayo Clinic (Alix), Arizona

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Sky Harbor is about 25 minutes from Mayo Clinic on 56th street in Scottsdale. However, that is with mild traffic. If you are leaving around 3:30 pm/4 pm you could run into early traffic, especially going through downtown. The 51 tends to be less congested than the 101S but try to plan ahead in case of traffic.

56th Street is the Phoenix hospital. 134th street is the Scottsdale campus with the medical school.

Anyone know stats for the Arizona Campus in regards to how many of those that interview are accepted? They only have MN campus on MSAR...

Got hold earlier in month from Minn. guess I won’t be getting IIs at Harvard Yale or Stanford if out of running at both mayos

Yes I’m definitely thankful for that..but as a west coaster I was looking forward to mingling with east coast old money types. Maybe get invited to their house in the Hamptons tbh

I did but I have a feeling Hopkins might actually be less selective due to Baltimore and perception of the school as very rigorous. Also very low post II acceptance rate if I’m remembering the sheet right

MSAR combines both campuses into one. AZ campus is listed as a satellite campus or regional campus, something like that.

From what I have heard, they are pretty similar between campuses now (first year AZ had a lot higher stats, but supposedly evened out now).

Look at this from their own web site..

looks like 586 + 82 = 668 interviewed and 282 acceptance were sent - That's 42%

Most of the college send 3x acceptance letters, so from MSAR it may look like 10-12% for matriculated but you have to multiple by 3

Got put on hold today. First thing I've heard post-secondary anywhere... so on the bright side there are probably no awful/DoA deficits in letters of rec, personal statement, or activities!

Anyone know the latest current interview dates available for the normal AZ program?

I saw the last Monday of September and then every Monday and Friday of October. Not sure if there were any after because I didn't check.

Is there an available match list for the AZ campus?
EDIT: Also are average step 1 scores published for the AZ campus?

We don't have any 4th years yet so no match list for AZ. Step 1 scores won't be published until early next year.

Hey y'all, I'm a current M1 who's doesn't feel like studying right now, if you have any questions feel free to ask them on here and I'll try to answer!

What are the interviews like? Are they pretty intimidating? Or are the interviewers pretty relaxed? Anything you can say about interviews would be great! Also, what is the final review like? Like what percentage of my overall post-II evaluation score is based on my MCAT, GPA, interview, letters, etc.?

My interviews were chill (same thing for most people I've talked to, with a few exceptions). They have prepared questions but it feels conversational. There are a few HR-style questions ("describe a time when...") that they give you a heads up about. Just give honest, transparent answers and they'll appreciate that. Make sure you can answer why medicine and why Mayo pretty succinctly. Once you've interviewed, your MCAT and GPA really don't matter at all. They're more focused on how you interviewed, how well you fit the Mayo culture, whether you're legitimately interested in the school (i.e. letters of intent/interest), etc. The AdCom meets every week to discuss interviewees and rank them. You'll eventually be notified that you're ranked (some people get ranked faster than others, don't read into it). After everyone is interviewed for the season, they have one final meeting to decide on the initial 50 acceptances, along with 20-30 waitlist acceptance. Really important to have your letter of intent/interest in before that (the meeting last year was in the middle of Jan). Hope that helps.

Thank you so much! I so appreciate it!! Do you know the post II rate of acceptance is?

I think they interviewed around 400-430ish (maybe more) people for the last cycle, and accepted probably 60-70 including the waitlist, so I'd guess it's around 14-17%.

Would you say the letter of intent/interest is an unspoken requirement? (I always thought they were more for people who are getting the silent treatment for long periods of time)

Definitely not just for people who are getting the silent treatment. It's good to be proactive and show a school (esp. Mayo) that you're interested. Not everyone that got accepted sent one, and not everyone that sent one got accepted, but they definitely help the AdCom determine who truly wants to be there.

Does anyone know the best way to get to campus? Also where to stay the night before

There is a Marriott right next to Mayo Clinic Scottsdale. Public transportation out there is poor, would recommend Uber/Lyft or a rental car.

Awesome thanks. Nice to see that flying into PHX is expensive as hell. Would I be ok leaving past 7 on the same day as interviews

That part of Scottsdale is way out there with, I believe, 1 bus route that only comes every 30 minutes. So, if you miss it or it never shows up, you wait a long time. Phoenix is a lot more spread out than most major cities, so extensive public transportation is longer and less reliable. The Marriott is probably $100 a night, and will drive you to mayo clinic. There are other hotels a little farther away, but you would need to get a ride.

When do interviews end? It could take an hour to get to airport depending on traffic. Security lines are usually pretty quick, but who knows.

Does anyone know what AZ/FL 2+2 interviews are like? And how many do they interview for 12 spots? Thanks 🙂

dream school put me on hold 🙁 just got the notification. I’m assuming it’s basically like a soft R... good luck to the rest of you with interviews!

You got an II on yesterday? As in Sunday?? Congratulations by the way!

Current M2

let me know if you have any questions
This has already been asked but I would love a second students comments on this:

What was your interview like? Format?
How much of your acceptance hinges on the interview (I.e. what are the weight percentages of MCAT/GPA, EC’s, interview, etc.)
What is the post II acceptance rate for Mayo, Arizona?

I had 2 interviews (30 minutes). One was with one of the deans and one with a community member (he is an ASU professor who coordinates and works with Mayo). Both were very conversational. They had a few questions they were given to ask to see our answer, but that took maybe 1/2 the time and the rest was just talking to one another. They read your application and will ask specific questions if you mentioned something they found unique or interesting in your application. They want to get to know you better.

I would say there is a lot of weight on the interview (including any later communication you have with admissions that indicates your interest in Mayo). They are big into people who mesh well with the Mayo values and philosophy. If they want to interview you, then your MCAT/GPA, ECs are up to par but they need to make sure you are a good fit for the class they are assembling and for Mayo Clinic as a whole

Anyone live in Scottsdale/Phoenix care to comment on the weather?

The biggest reason I decided not to apply here is that I can’t stand intensely hot weather, otherwise I’d love to apply. Having second thoughts.
It does get pretty hot for a few months but then it is absolutely beautiful the entire rest of the year.

This. I will add you get used to the heat after a few years and will be able to tolerate the heat while wearing long sleeves/pants. Only gets brutal if you are in direct sunlight for a while.

has anybody interviewed here yet? is it similar to mayo clinic Rochester

Anyone know why mayo hasn’t been picking up their phone today? I know this is a dumb question but maybe someone knows

I’ve had the same issue when I call to reschedule my II. I left a VM yesterday but still nothing?
Small office, I'd try calling at random intervals. You might have caught them at lunch or in a meeting so just try a few times throughout the day, I hope that works.

What are the selectives like?
Depends:
We have some where you read a book and write a reflection on it/meet with a librarian to discuss it
Some where you do modules on blackboard to learn things like statistics
If you have a doctor near home/willing to let you shadow for >= 20 hours you can put one together yourself
And then you have ones in the clinic that range from a few days seeing outpatients to some of the surgical ones that you are there 10+ hours a day for all 5 days.

If you like surgery or are considering pursuing surgery it is a great way to get into the OR early, see procedures, possibly scrub in and be standing right there watching.

Since you can choose which service you are on for each selective week, the experience is really up to you to make. You can be very busy each selective week or not as busy.

Cool, thank you! I wasn't exactly sure what they were so this really helped.

i absolutely love this school and would be so happy to go here. With that being said, What is the interview process here like? Is it chill? any specifics that would help out on interview day?
