2019-2020 Michigan

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
When they say, "don't exceed 1500 characters", is that including spaces, or not? There's no character count (at least I don't see one) as you're typing your responses into the boxes.

I would assume that character counts always include spaces, sadly.

To avoid last weeks spamming and to keep the posts in this thread relevant, I went ahead and made a Michigan Monday anxiety thread. We shall do our spamming and ****posting here:

Does anyone know if the MSTP program is involved in the Monday-only II? Or is that a separate thing?

Any SDNers one of the 20 that got an II?

This is an interesting year. Usually a good number of SDNers post about their IIs every Michigan Monday (at least according to last year's thread). Anyways, time to wait another week!

All the ones who would get them in the past found out they are missing the ghost requirement. :🙁

HEY FAM I THINK I GOT A II???? it's on my portal, but the email probs got lost (my email is crazy!!), I'm gonna write to them and see. ANYWAY I'm pretty sure this is the real deal, so for reference - LM 75, OOS, complete on like 7/21

Does your application no longer say "application complete"? Where do you see it?

Regarding the last question, assuming its still part of the prompt:

Optional: How would your past experiences in laboratory-based research on fundamental problems in the biological and biomedical sciences motivate you to pursue similar efforts as a physician-scientist?

If I explicitly state an interest in public health throughout my primary and secondary, should I just leave this question blank, even though I have plenty of undergrad research to elaborate on? Or should I spin it to research n public health (which is something I'm open to)

Are you MSTP? This prompt was not on my secondary.

I didn't have this as part of my MSTP application

Not sure where you found this, Cheeezcake, but that prompt is definitely on the "interview secondary" that I received - UMich sends out a form to fill out to people who get interviews, which includes some more essay questions. A secondary secondary, basically!

Even though I have undergrad research, I'm going to leave it blank, since it hasn't been a huge focus. I don't think it'll make a huge difference either way, though!

Think I pulled it from here, not sure why. Or maybe I'm from the future. . .

Well, looking at last year's sdn thread, it looks like it used to be on the MSTP application! They must have taken it off.

Though, by the way, have you not gotten your actual secondary yet? You might want to check with them - I had to email them to get it, my spam filter was way too Thicc

Still waiting on verification! Was forced to start my app a little than I wanted. So just trying to pre-write.

Did you get an II from the MSTP yet?

Do you know if they review the applications in the order they received them? I submitted my application on 7/2... should I assume it's a no?

After seeing the 2019 class profile infographic that says 100% of class had leadership experience (66% with 5+ leadership experiences) I kind of feel like I should just assume I got an R right now. I don't have any leadership experience, or any pubs/long term research experience for that matter.

Feels bad man, UofM was my top choice. I hadn't realized they had such a focus on leadership experience and was assuming I would be a good fit.

@Gilakend was 2019 an unusual year? Or is it really just nearly impossible to get in without leadership experience?

"leadership" might be loosely defined. It doesn't necessarily have to come with a formal title.

I don’t think it is necessarily in that order. Seeing previous years posts would lead me to believe that they have some way of sorting applications and reviewing them at later times
