2019-2020 SUNY - Downstate

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
hey 5/6 AL person here, graduating next week do y'all think updating DS on the honors I receive at graduation will do anything to help my standing on the waitlist? Summa Cum Laude and honors of excellence in my major?
I would send a separate update as well. You don’t want to run the risk of them not noticing, I would play all my cards at this point.

Hi! My friend who is an MS3 at Downstate just said that "Latest update is that unit 1 will be online. I don't know too much more about it, but this was announced like 20 minutes ago." He reports Unit 1 usually goes until early October, and that "even if the unit is virtual, they still may have you come in on some capacity." He also states to just sit back and wait for official recommendations from Downstate lolol.

Also if anybody is in NY/NJ area and needs BLS through AHA, American Heart Association CPR BLS Classes | NJ | CPR Certification is offering courses in some locations, limiting capacity to 2-3 people. Call to see what locations are still open. I was able to take the course yesterday and get my card today! The price, though, is $99.99.

Have a nice memorial day weekend guys!!

Long time lurker here 🙂
I spoke to a few MS1's today after their virtual town hall. Obviously, wait for official updates to come from DS. But if it gives anyone on the WL (myself included 5/6) another sliver of hope, they are offering newly accepted students the option to defer for a year due to Covid-19 related hardship or personal reasons which might free up some seats for the Class of 2024.

Online classes will be subject to more updates from administration (but they are prepared to be online until Oct) and they are likely waiting for more finalization before sending an update to accepted and WL students

Thanks so much! Did they say fully online with no in-person at all? I wonder when they will make some official announcements already!

Just FYI for other accepted students, my friend who's a current student said that first semester is online for us incoming MS1s :|

That is such a shame =(
I'm afraid that once this pandemic is over, people won't even want to return back to in-school education.

So from what I gathered classes it will likely be online only, with the exception of maybe anatomy labs which they will have social distancing/small group procedures developed for. But even then, this might go fully online depending on where DS is at in a few months (nobody knows).

It isn't the worst thing to be online especially for part of the pre-clinical curriculum. At least we aren't totally the guinea pigs, it sounds like the trial and error done with current students this Spring makes them a lot more confident for administering a temporary online MS1. Trying to stay positive!

Will it be fully online? Some posters above were saying that there will be some in-person activities here and there

It sucks that we won’t get that MS1 clinical
exposure that DS is renowned for

Yes that is true but I do know that some MS1s at least currently are involved in telehealth. Not the same as getting to palpate, take vitals etc... but we are signing up for a lifetime of doing all this stuff anyway so there's no rush 🙂 stay positive and things will pick up when they can

So classes will be online for the entire first semester or first unit? Cause yesterday some of the students were saying first unit which is until October.

Nothing has been confirmed yet but the rumor is first unit

Also copped an A (1st and only this cycle!)!!! Received a "final decision" email at 10:46pm. Still do not see the CYMS tool on AMCAS though...
I am IS, interviewed March, was placed on the AL on 5/10. Sent my letter of intent on 5/16 (I will be attending!).

Fingers crossed for all of you!!

Congrats!! It took 4days for me to see it on CYMS. So no worries about that

Don't know how many people know about this, but for accepted students looking for housing, there is a Facebook marketplace called Downstate COM Marketplace for housing and furniture/books. Hope y'all find this helpful: Downstate COM Marketplace

Im lowkey tempted to start my own class of 2024 page LOL. I joined one that was on FB but they have yet to accept my request

Damn, super bummed to hear classes won't be in-person. Wish I could take a 1 semester deferral lol

I got waitlisted on 5/10 and have I'm having serious doubts, I can't imagine what y'all must be going through right now. Regardless of when we got waitlisted, let's not lose hope. We are all brilliant, compassionate, and caring. No matter where and when we end up in medical school, we will become amazing doctors. Even if some of us never get off the AL (both 5/6 and 5/10), it doesn't mean that we aren't good enough or won't be great physicians in the future.
Thank you for this. really means a lot. you're right, i think it is something we should never forget. We all collectively struggle, yet, i know one day it'll be our time. The people in this thread have been a great help and I appreciate all of you

I was accepted off the waitlist last night as well! Placed on it 5/10. Interviewed in March and I am in-state.

To give you all some hope, I will probably not be accepting the offer. And to those of you who have not heard anything back, please keep your heads high! I was in a pretty tense and anxious state until yesterday when I went from 0 acceptances to being taken off 2 waitlists. One day it will be your time. Hopefully it's this cycle. Even if it's not, you made it this far and you CAN and WILL be a physician. I know many people have said this before and I always thought it was kind of hopeless optimism. When your world instantly changes and you are given the one thing that you have worked your entire life for, you will believe it too.

The real question (in my head) is how many people were on each waitlist? I was waitlisted on 5/10 and still haven’t heard back. I’m curious how many more people are left in my position who were waitlisted on 5/10. I know there are a few here on SDN but there’s no way of measuring this more broadly

Yeah seems like a decent amount of people because based off SDN there 16+ based off a previous post if you heard back from 5/10 and at that point people did. So it seems like it is a pretty large WL. I’m still waiting to hear back as well

thanks so much for hope and positivity. thank you as well for updating us on your position, helps a lot

Thank you, I was placed on the AL on 5/10 (did not complete the prematrics stuff). I will most likely be committing to another school! Stay positive and keep your hopes up!!

Thanks for the update!

It seems a good chunk of the folks who got off the AL last night aren't committing, I imagine as a result of the WL movement at other schools also picking up - perhaps that means this following week will come with even more movement than we've been getting!

Well I'll be here hoping that at least 😛
