2019-2020 SUNY - Downstate

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Does anyone know if they accept paper thank you cards for interviews?
Not sure about physical thank you cards but there’s a designated place on the portal under document uploads where you can upload your thank you letter!

I emailed faculty... was that a mistake?

So... Step 1 is going to be pass/fail for all of us incoming ms1.

Thoughts? How will this change the experience of pre-clinical years for all of us? How will downstate adapt to keep the competitive match list it has had in the past couple years?

They said "no earlier than Jan 1st 2022" so I'm hoping it ends up being later than when we'd be taking it, which would be late winter / early spring 2022. Frankly, I typically find myself doing well on standarized exams and my SMP has covered most of the preclinical coursework already so I was "excited" to sit for and hopefully kill Step 1 personally. That being said, if it does go P/F for us I really do wonder what Downstate will do with its preclinical years and if it will keep it P/F as well.

Fortunately, Downstate excels in its clinical education. They do well at matching students into top NYC residencies, and if more emphasis gets put on Step 2 CK scores then Downstate may actually fair better with the changes due to their longer clinical exposure.

If the changes do get put in place by the time Step 1 rolls around for us, then our best-case scenario is Step 2 CK replaces Step 1 for importance in residency apps rather than school prestige, as far as I can figure.

uhhh ok so like.... im guessing we will find out today or tomorrow, but what exactly are we finding out lol?? hopefully everyone who interviewed hears something, not just those who were accepted.
why do you think it's today or tomorrow?

I believe it will be their first like 200 or so acceptances. And then they will go from there in the following weeks. Thats the vibe I got during interview day.

Sorry if this has been addressed already.. but do you think it's worth it to attend an interview here in March? I really like the school but don't want to take the time off work, fly out, etc. if it's more of an interview for waitlist spots.

Honestly considering they haven't released any decisions yet, shoot your shot. No one could definitively have an answer to this until they release the first round of decisions

Don't view it as an "interview for a WL" spot. Your chances of acceptance due to a March date as opposed to say a November date aren't that drastically different.

Just got an invitation for a II but there was no mention of a phone interview with a current student in the email or on the portal? Do they inform us of that post-interview? (i apologize in advance if this has already been answered)

about 2 or so weeks after your interview a student from the school will email you to set up a time

My boss sent me to get pastries for our lab meeting and I saw this. AM I GETTING INTO MED SCHOOL TODAY?? Doubt it... will prob suffer until late June but this anticipation is almost fun because my life is so pathetic *cowboy hat emoji* *thumbs up emoji*

Do you think we will get an email acceptance/rejectance, phone call, or in the mail? Anyone know?

I think in the past it has always been by email. Also, I called the office and was told that the first decisions should come out on the 19th! They also said that not everyone would receive a response on exactly 2/19, so we still need to be patient.
Good luck to everyone! Feeling both nervous and excited.

Oh my god this school is gonna be the end of me. This is at least the 3rd time they’ve pushed back releasing decisions.

I feel a lot better now that I know an official date, but at the same time, I would give my firstborn child for a Downstate acceptance right now. Last year's thread seems to suggest that they send acceptances in batches throughout the day. Some people said they received an A in the afternoon, others at night.
