2019-2020 SUNY - Downstate

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I just called the admissions office to ask about how decisions are rolling out. They did not say anything about a 200 number of acceptances before waitlisting applicants, but they said that not all pre-waitlist decisions have been rolled out. These decisions are a rolling process. Applicants will be notified via email if they are placed on a waitlist as soon as that decision is made. All the best to all still waiting to hear back!
Thank you for clarifying this! Hopefully people stop speculating on their own and worrying other people on the thread lol. Be positive everyone!

Accepted as well! I have high mcat low GPA, as some people were asking. 3.5cGPA, 3.21sGPA, 521 MCAT. They grilled me on it in interview but I stuck with my explanation confidently.

Interviewed in December, lifelong NYC resident.

Can you talk more about how exactly they drilled you/what you responded (if you are comfortable of course as this might help other students in your predicament).

This is great to hear! Hope to receive the same good news after my interview. Us NYC residents typically have no desire to leave haha.

Funny part is that I really really wanted to leave NYC lol... But waitlisted or rejected everywhere else 🙁

Mostly just talked about lack of maturity early on and how early clinical exposure through EMS played a role in how seriously I took grades and school. Helps that I had a strong upwards trends, a strong retake (C to A in orgo), and took two gap years before reapplying. They had a question prepared that specifically asked about my low grades and reapplication

Anyone know if there awill be any acceptance posts later in the day ?

Curious to hear other people's thoughts on this but how do yall think the step 1 P/F change is going to affect downstate? I feel like their match list is really strong for a "low-tier"/unranked school but I'm worried that things will change in a few years. Any thoughts are appreciated!

I wouldn’t be. Look at the trends over the years, the students are matching regularly at the same programs. Which tells me that the programs expect a level of performance from Downstate students and that there’s a bit of a.. positive reputation? So what I’m trying to say is that those programs aren’t going to suddenly stop taking Downstate students just because this exam isn’t graded anymore. They’re still going to trust in the quality of the Downstate education.

I think Step 2 and clinical experience will still impact. Downstate students seem to pretty consistently match at residencies at NYU, NYP Columbia, Cornell, UC schools, etc. going back into the 1990s from downstate’s website documenting residency placements. I doubt that step 1 being P/F will make that large of a difference for most students.

That said, very competitive residencies may be more difficult to get into, especially those that placed an emphasis on step 1 scores before. That might shift to step 2 or onto more qualitative measures such as research, extracurriculars, and letters of rec from the right people. It’s probably still up in the air until we get through a few cycles of students taking step 1 P/F before we can really be sure about what the impact could be.

That's a good point, thank you!

Yeah I was worried it'd be harder to match into more competitive specialties like ophtho, ENT, etc. Thanks for your input!

Downstate seems to have a good number of students matching in Ophtho, ENT, and ortho each year from the past couple years. Downstate itself also has these residency programs, so, in the long run you might have a good chance staying at downstate if you get experience within those departments while a med student.

I'm considering one of these specialties and this whole STEP 1 P/F thing has been weighing on me. Prior to the STEP 1 announcement, I was set on Downstate because of the cheap tuition and ability to live at home.
Now, I'm not sure because I'm waiting on decisions from "higher-ranked" schools like Einstein/BU which will cost me $20-30k more a year.
Not sure whether I should trust my gut instinct of going to Downstate to save $$ or to go to a higher-ranked school tbh :\\

You still have time to decide, so I would wait until you hear back from those schools to make a definite decision. I genuinely don't think that attending a lower ranked school will block you out from any of those residencies. Plus, as others have said, Downstate has a consistent and positive reputation and a good match rate including those competitive residencies.

This also might be anecdotal, but the doctor I scribe for (who trained at Columbia) has told me that his colleagues and residents that went to Downstate tend to be some of the best and most prepared from the start of residency - whether that's the school or the personal drive of those people, I'm not sure.

Did anyone who interviewed in January/early Feb remember when we would be hearing back?

Congratulations to all those accepted, and to the others good luck!
For the $100 deposit we can't deposit right now but we'd have to wait until April 15, right?

Is it normal to not see "Plan to enroll" on AMCAS despite being accepted?
Also, does anyone know when Certiphi will send us info?

I’m having the same issue. I’m sure in a couple days it’ll update..if not I’m going to call admissions and see what’s up. Not sure about Certiphi though.

I called admissions re "choose your medical school" and they said give it 48 hours from acceptance to update

So my interviewer accidentally CCd me in an email with their notes from my interview a while back. They said some amazing things so I was kinda hopeful for this one. Guess the interview isn't everything

My interviewer said amazing things in my presence. Also, my student interviewer gave positive affirmations during our talk. Looks like the interview doesn't hold as much weight as I thought.

Interviewing here in 2 weeks — any info on how interview day typically goes / how the interviews are structured? Thanks!

There is a set lunch + tour with current students, but other than that just depends what time you scheduled your interview! You might have some waiting around to do depending if it is before/after the lunch and tour, so get to know the other interviewees that day!
