2019-2020 William Carey University College of Osteopathic Medicine (WCUCOM)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
A little of both, I have a better option available for me personally. Negative aspects just the location, attendance policy, and dress code didn't gel with me the best. Absolutely loved the staff and atmosphere of this school though, the were genuinely interested in you as an applicant.
Im not super concerned about any of that; my main concerns come from a few people that have been ripping them hard on some of these forums. I loved most of the school apart from the sewage pond smell you get if the wind blows the wrong way but that goes for much of the city. I am most concerned about board prep both USMLE and COMLEX and how EM residencies will be impacted by the merger.

What I’ve gathered from interview/talking to current students is that yes this school has had their problems in the past, but have definitely been in the right direction ever since. Everybody I talked to was super excited to be there and be apart of the program. Their board scores are actually quite competitive as well given that their curriculum is 100% geared toward acing them. As for EM residency we will see, but they have lots of support from the state of Mississippi as well as within their rotation sites.

Right, like I said, I quite like the school, I like the area, and the students and faculty seem happy. Just concerned that perhaps a larger faction of the match is scrambling, I hope that isn't the case. Hope this ends up working out well

The consensus is that they screen heavily pre-secondary. Someone above mention they only send secondaries to ~25% of applicants so it could be that but you can call to make sure your app didn’t slip through the cracks.

Do many people get off the deferred list at this school?

I heard that there’s a lot of movement when some people decide to decline their acceptance so I wouldn’t worry too much.
Thanks! Thats what I'm hoping for. I'm thinking since I was put on there relatively early on in the cycle that my chances of getting off it at some point are pretty good. Just got to stay positive

Was this pre or post II?

As you should be. They won't/don't prep you well for USMLE/COMLEX. This seems to have increased with changes in course directors. There's a ridiculous amount of low-yield info OMS-II year. For some reason, they prefer to teach Step 2 material instead of the Step 1 foundational material. There is constant bashing of First Aid, Pathoma, and B&B by instructors in multiple courses. It's dumbfounding, and comes across as an ego problem. Certain professors will fight tooth and nail on poorly worded exam questions, refusing to give points back. I don't understand why they enjoy preventing student success.

If you attend, prepare to spend a LOT of extra time studying STEP 1 related topics. The decent Step 1 scores these past 2 years has been due to incredible worth ethic, and NOT exemplary course instruction.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again: Use Carey as a last resort option.

As a current OMS-II, I have never heard any of the teachers bash First Aid, Boards and Beyond, or Pathoma. They have said to not use it as your primary study materials for school exams, but they don’t bash it. Several of the teachers even include references to First Aid and specific Boards and Beyond videos in their lectures in case you want to supplement their lectures with it.

Also, the school has now started paying for students to have access to Boards and Beyond, Sketchy, free year-long subscriptions to COMBANK and COMQUEST, and they’ve also gotten a severe discount for a year-long subscription to UWORLD for us.

I’m sorry your experience may have been sub-optimal, but the school is really wanting everyone to succeed and is doing everything they can to make sure we do.

Do you know if many people get accepted off the deferred list?

Would any current students mind commenting on the attendance policy. I understand that its 80/20 but are professors ok with you sitting in the back and doing your own thing? Do professors enforce it like their life depends on it or are some of them more chill. Thanks for the help!

Most don’t care. The Pharm teachers don’t want you to wear headphones, but they don’t care if you sit in the back and do anki cards or whatever you like to do your computer.

The school is in the process of starting another EM residency at magnolia regional in Cornith and several others(IM and FM) at Gulfport memorial, they have support from the state. I would go to Carey over any of the newer schools, our alumni network is growing and that will help over a brand new school.

As another current OMS-II, I would have to agree with Njp46. I have never heard a professor bashing on any of the resources. The professors really care about student success. I love that the school provides these extra resources for free because UWorld, COMBANK, COMQUEST, sketchy, B&B can all be very expensive.

I'm sorry if any previous years have had bad experiences but I would say the current is quite different.

Hey guys!

I have been lucky enough to have been accepted into both William Carey as well as ARCOM. I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions/opinions on which school is in my best interest to attend? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance!
Come to Carey, the school is help start several residencies in the state and things are improving here, ARCOM is a newer school and will have growing pains, I heard ARCOM has a weird curriculum and required attendance. Carey is also cheaper and the alumni network is growing which will help for sure.

Go wherever you felt was a better fit for you. Otherwise, you may not enjoy your time as a medical student.

That's when I was complete and I haven't heard anything. Does anyone know if that's a sign of rejection?

You aren’t rejected from Carey until you get an email at the end of the cycle. They are constantly evaluating and reevaluating applications throughout the entire cycle.

Does anyone know if it looks bad if you don't immediately send the seat deposit after you get accepted? I'm working to save up for it but I'm worried it looks like I'm not interested!

You’re already accepted; it doesn’t matter

Does anyone know if the interview is open or closed file for this school?

Can any current students tell me how rotations work at William Carey? Also what options do you have for the elective rotations?

Accepted! So excited!
