2020-2021 UT Medical Branch

I mean when you look at the grand scheme of things they’ve probably sent out less than 30% of their interviews so far.
Do you think my MCAT and GPA are withing range for UTMB considering they are suckers for 3.9-4.0s?

II this morning for me as well! I was in the middle of a lecture in the morning as I got the invite so I only opened the portal to check the dates but didn't sign up. When I went back to choose a date a couple hours later they were all later dates! I'm guessing the dates I saw had filled up at that point. Oh well, just glad to get an II. congrats to others who got one as well. Also, do yall think schools are increasing the volume of interviews they send out this year since it's all online?

Msar provides the best estimates for that kind of info. Beyond that your guess is as good as mine. It’s out of your control anyways. Just try not to stress about it too much 🙂

Some schools. I believe Dell indicated it would. But I doubt that the majority will. It’s even harder this season to find interviewers, as so many physicians are tied up.

I don’t think so. Going virtual isn’t going to reduce the amount of time it takes for an interview

Is your app only considered complete once they get your CASPer score? mine says incomplete but everything is submitted except that. I just took my CASPer on the 30th and I know it takes about 3 weeks.

Correct; UTMB wants to see your CASPer score before being considered for an interview invite.

Got my first II today!

LM score 71 (515 MCAT, 3.71 GPA). 2ndary submitted 6/27

I'm also a reapplicant who's getting a Masters degree in infectious disease epi. Maybe COVID-19 research helped, but probably it was retaking the MCAT this summer.

Don't worry, they have a class size of 230 and do interviews for months.
Hey @wysdoc I have seen you on many of the other threads for the TMDSAS schools, and thought you could give a good opinion on this. What do you think my chances are with a 512 and 3.79 cumulative GPA?

those scores are good for most of the TX schools!

Just out of curiosity, do you know how often schools send out interview invites? Like after this wave today, when should we expect the next one?

Congrats to all who have received IIs!

Thought I might get one.
cGPA 3.62, sGPA 3.95, MCAT 516, graduate GPA 4.0.
Maybe I blew it on my CASPER?

Each has a system. Last year it was usually about once a month, committees meeting & talk over applications they have read and decide on more interview selections. As long as you have everything turned in it’s waiting time.

Awesome! Thank you so much!

I was worried earlier this week when the first invitations were sent out and I didn’t receive one. Turns out that worry was unfounded. You’re still in the running, I’m sure!

My grad school GPA is a 4.0 but undergrad is in the 3.7 range, your scores are probably within their range and an II will depend on CASPer, essays, experiences etc. It's the beginning of August, you shouldn't be worrying so much yet.

Do med schools review apps in chronological order? I was complete on 6/11 with an LM of 71 (512, 3.9) and didn't get an II this week. Does this mean I am no longer being considered?

No, schools keep re-reviewing complete files and deciding on interviews. They like to see what else is coming in as people complete their apps.
They are not going to use up all their interview slots this early because the deadline for being complete in TMDSAS is October 30 this year.

I knew I would be fighting an uphill battle with my cGPA (3.65), but it's still a little demoralizing to see IIs go out and not get one. What do you think my chances are if I haven't received an II during this first round?

I have a similar GPA and got an II yesterday so I'm sure you're still in the running!! Don't stress you got this

This question might not belong here, but has anyone gotten II from Tx school? I feel like UTMB is the one that sent out most of their II by this point.

Some people have multiple interviews at Tx schools. Long, tt Lubbock, El Paso, dell, tcom, tamu, and utsw have all begun extending II’s as well. But as @wysdoc has mentioned, it may take longer for schools to send out their interviews this cycle as they may want to wait what comes in. So, no school have sent out most of their II’s at this point. Even in a normal cycle I would assume that II’s going out in early August represent less than 30% of the slots.

Yes, thank you for saying so, do not let II neuroticism discourage you so soon. If you don't have interviews by the holidays, then that's a different story.

Yes, for this school

How much weight does UTMB put on casper? My stats are good (3.98, 525), I thought my essays were ok, but no II for me today (also, I'm a TX resident). I've gotten invites from other schools, which makes me worry that my casper didn't go well, and if so, that's a red flag at most TX schools.

In the Courage Session they did with TMDSAS, the admissions office said they put a pretty big emphasis on Casper. Probably much more so than other schools.

If you got an ii to Plfsom you should possibly be good? Since PLFSOM also uses Casper to invite to their school for interviews. I wouldn’t read so much into it this early in the cycle

They said in their TMDSAS courage session that they put a very high importance on CASPER. That being said, there is still plenty of time to receive an interview invite. Wishing you the best.

If I interviewed at UTMB last year, would it be possible for me not to get interviewed this year? I hadn't made any significant strides on my app during my gap year when I submitted my primary, but I reworked my essays to be even stronger. I completed my app 7/23/20 so maybe it hasn't been reviewed yet?

Anything is possible... but they must have liked something about your application last cycle to give you an interview. Good chance it hasn't been reviewed yet so hang tight- it's early in the season!

For the second essay question 'Describe, if relevant, circumstances in your life that represent a hardship (e.g. financial difficulties, illness, educational disadvantage). How have these circumstances impacted you, and how do you believe they will impact your practice of medicine?'
I was wondering if it's appropriate to talk about a family situation where an older sibling has been unemployed for over 3 years and it's been an emotional/financial toll on my family? I'm very close with my sibling and trying to support them through it has been a big part of my life.

Does anyone know how many students UTMB typically interviews? It says about a thousand on the MSAR, but is that true? Just curious.

Why would they put an inaccurate number on MSAR? The class size is 230, it is reasonable that they have to interview 4 to 5 times that to select their class.

Do you think they'll interview more this year? They doubled the number of interview dates but do we know if they're interviewing the same number of candidates per day?

I don’t think they will but that’s my hunch. Dell did say they will interview more this year.

under the FAQs in the secondary portal it confirms they interviewed over 1100 applicants. It’s most likely the same this year and they added more dates and reduced the number of applicants per day to accommodate for people’s schedules I’m sure.
