2020-2021 UT Medical Branch

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
So I need to get something clear. If you have any info thats directly from a current student, I'd appreciate it. Do students get hands clinical patient exposure during pre-clinical years? During the courage session with the faculty on facebook, the lady hinted "no", adding that students get a patient simulated experience of some sort. But information from other sources indicate otherwise. Could anyone please shed more light on this? patient exposure during pre-clinical years is one of the major things i'm looking for in a medical school.

There is a student-directed clinic that any year student may volunteer to spend time in, when spare time is available. Of course as an MS-1 or MS-2 your involvement will be more as a support staff since you don't know medical management yet, but you could get practice interviewing patients and doing simple tasks for sure. I don't know how this clinic has changed since the COVID-19 pandemic.

If I interviewed at UTMB last year, would it be possible for me not to get interviewed this year? I hadn't made any significant strides on my app during my gap year when I submitted my primary, but I reworked my essays to be even stronger. I completed my app 7/23/20 so maybe it hasn't been reviewed yet?
How do you feel about your latest CASPer?

For ppl who already interviewed, did you get an email with the links the week of your interview? Mine is on Wednesday and I haven't received any other information about how to log in and stuff, besides seeing my interviewers' names on the portal.

Hello yall, Can anyone please chime in on the student-run clinic at UTMB. Its one of the attractions for me at the school. Any information would be highly appreciated. Also, if anyone has interviewed already, could you please give us a summary of how you felt about the experience? THanks!

@BYC_ if you are invited to interview, you will also have the option to attend an online social the night before your interview, which would be a great place to ask current students about their experiences with the St. Vincent's Student Clinic.

Nvm they sent me one today. I think they send them 2 days in advance !!

Wait you got an II and then they were just like jk you didn’t??

I don't think it was an II, it was the schedule for the interviews on the 26th which is way too soon for it to be an actual II, just a glitch in the mailing system

Are interviews this week still going as planned even with hurricane Laura and tropical storm Marco?

Yes, if internet/Zoom platforms are still operational! However, Laura is strengthening so watch the UTMB news for changes in plans.

So... I still have not received a secondary. Do you guys think an OOS applicant with 3.99 GPA and 512 MCAT stands a chance? I'm tempted to retake the MCAT (scored 518-524 on the practice tests), but don't know that I will actually improve (or even if I did, if I will have the scores back in time).

How long ago was your application transmitted? All applicants can complete a UTMB secondary, so you definitely weren't screened out. Maybe they are experiencing delays in processing your TMDSAS app.

Your stats are competitive

Everyone, Galveston Island is under a mandatory evacuation order pending the arrival of Hurricane Laura. All UTMB offices related to admissions will be closed temporarily and all interviews scheduled for this week will be rescheduled when the staff is back at work. (I presume - staff will be securing their homes and driving inland so I don't think they'll be doing much "work from home" for a few days.)
Current med student classes are suspended as well.
A 3-5 foot storm surge (water rushing in from the ocean) is predicted, as well as heavy rain.

So, don't worry, keep up with your other schools, and wait for UTMB to get the all-clear.

Don’t forget to check your promotions folder, that’s where my secondary was.

For those who scheduled an II on 9/4 or early Sep, have yall heard anything from the school? On my app portal, there is a term and agreement page for the interview, am I supposed to accept that now or should I wait till my interview is getting closer?

Go ahead and accept your interview now - if they need to reschedule you due to storm issues they will.

You accept it to see who are your interviewers. Accept it anytime. You get an email with the Interview Day links 2 days prior to the interview.

I don't see that in my app portal. Does it show up closer to the interview date? I'm scheduled for 9/30

It might. Mine showed up pretty fast after I got my interview email about 3.5 weeks ago. I would also say that they have been having a lot of problems with AMP portal so they are fixing it currently, so if its not showing within a week of your interview date, you should message them!

I feel good about my CASPer, not too different from last year's actually. Unless UTMB raised its CASPer requirements, I don't think my score changed by much. Could it be that my secondary wasn't good enough, since UTMB didn't have one last year?

I’m sure you did just fine on the CASPer but grading it is just as subjective as actually taking it so you never know. Your secondary plays heavily into it so that’s a great possibility in any scenario. However, it’s still early so there’s plenty of time for a shiny II.

Are there any threads here where people discuss their research of a school as they prep for interviews. I believe that it will be a valuable resource.

Not necessary, here is the general rule:
1. Go through your app, know the ins and outs and be prepared to answer questions about your experiences
2. Visit the school’s SDN interview feedback page (Past questions and such) and practice answering those Qs
3. Explore the school’s website and identify 2-4 things that attract you to the school (is there a specific program or opportunity at that school not found elsewhere?). Some people also suggest MSAR, I rarely use it though.
4. (optional but recommended) Do mock interviews with friends/Health professions office/faculty etc... and see how your responses come out.

Important TIPS:
-Know the three common questions: why medicine, tell me about yourself and why this school.
-Practice saying your answers out loud, maybe in front of a camera. DONT memorize your answers, have bullet points (2-4 ideas) you‘d like to touch on.
-Treat the interview like a conversation. Be confident, Don’t flex too hard. You are there because they see potential.

Hope this helps and good luck!!

So I received an email that my interview was cancelled due to the hurricane, but my portal still says my interview is scheduled for tomorrow the 28th. Should I look for a number to call to confirm this cancellation for tomorrow, do I email my interviewees to confirm that my interview was cancelled? I'm not sure what to do at this point. What does anyone recommend?

Don’t reach out until they reach out to you. They’re dealing with a dangerous hurricane so it’s best to let them take care of themselves first. Mine was cancelled Wednesday too. They will make accommodations, don’t worry you still will interview there. It doesn’t matter when, it matters how you interview.

May be Laura answer the phone!

Dr. Mouton, the dean, posted today that staff and administrators will begin reporting for work agin on Friday the 28th, and students will report back on Monday. I think they had enough time to send out cancellation emails before they evacuated but not enough time to reset portals.
Luckily this hurricane made landfall far enough east of Galveston that there wasn't as much damage as they had been anticipating.
You will see another email from admissions with your new date once they get back in the office.

They just rescheduled me for October. Sucks cause I wanted to interview earlier but an interview is an interview haha.

I also just got the email confirmation that my 8/28/2020 interview was moved to 10/16/2020. It'll be alright though, I'm glad the school didn't get hit as bad as anticipated!

Same here! I was surprised they had filled up all the dates before the 16th already

Hi guys! I haven't received their secondary or an email from them in general? I took my MCAT on the 29th of August, median GPA, strong EC, and strong clinical experience. Should I be concerned? :/

No, you're fine. Everyone gets a secondary who applies to UTMB. Usually, the turnaround is fast when you submit your primary in order to get the secondary. If it's been more than a week, I would email them. Keep in mind they just had a hurricane hit and have just got back to the office. If you don't get one by the end of this week, it wouldn't hurt to call them or email them about it. They're very responsive. Check your spam, etc.
