II, IS, Complete 7/20, stats below. VITA required before interview, but I haven't received an invite to complete the VITA, yet. Has anyone, else?

I think AMCAS only sends out VITA invites on Thursdays

Anybody else not receive residency verification or VITA invite? I applied over a month ago...

I submitted my secondary in July but never received a residency verification - just assumed it was verified if I got a secondary. Is the residency verification something additional we need to do?

I have no idea, I just see people talking about it. UW required a residency verification though. Have you gotten the VITA invite yet?

If you received a secondary without verification it means you met 3 of the 4 "of Washington" ties. You only need to verify residency if you don't meet those ties

To those who have received an II, did you receive and complete a VITA prior to the II?

Yes. I did it the day it came out (Thursday after the II) and underestimated it. I have practiced and am comfortable with in-person MMI, but without a rater present, I found the asynchronous component is very awkward. I recommend practicing MMI type questions recorded to your computer and timed. I struggled to look into the camera and I don't think I was particularly conscious of my affect, either. :dead:

Is anyone who was complete and under review in early august waiting for II?

II+ this morning, first interview invite/IS
8/18 submission

Literally woke up this morning and saw the email thinking it would be just one of those emails talking about future events. This email helped me get out of bed this morning.

LETS GET THIS BREAD
IM PUMPEDDDD

AMCAS complete 8/21. I meet the listed GPA/MCAT requirements but have not received a secondary...should I reach out to admissions?

EDIT: Ugh I'm stupid...I totally forgot they require LORs PRIOR to secondary.

OOS applicant here. Completed their ‘pre-secondary/mission statement’ on 08/28. Haven’t heard anything back yet.
Anyone else on a same boat?

Are you talking about Washington State or University of Washington? Washington State will not send a secondary to any OOS applicant unless they meet 3 of 4 'ties to Washington' (Born in WA, childhood address in WA, graduated high school in WA, parents reside in WA)

My bad. I’m on a wrong thread. Thanks and good luck to you’ll.

It's a rough feeling when you see applicants who applied later get II, especially when you overqualified for a school. Maybe it's because our secondaries were rough?

They could have different ADCOMS working on different piles of interviews going at different speeds. Interpreting timing of interviews and what not is pretty much trying to read tea leaves. Don't worry too much

I am curious as to what you consider overqualified. If you just mean stats, their 90th percentile is a LM >74. Your metrics are significantly higher than the median acceptance, but this is a school that does not put as much emphasis on metrics so your LM holds less weight in deciding qualification (the Senior Associate Dean for Admissions is an AAMC Holistic Review facilitator that teaches other schools how to incorporate holistic review into their admissions process).

Actually from a podcast I heard about this school and talking with a recruitment person they have an initial MCAT and gpa screen that applicants must reach and then after that the admissions committee is blind to stats while offering interviews and for the rest of the process

  • If undergraduate cumulative GPA is 3.8 – 4.0, then 27th percentile rank (494) or higher on the MCAT
  • If undergraduate cumulative GPA is 3.4 – 3.79, then 43rd percentile rank (499) or higher on the MCAT
  • If undergraduate cumulative GPA is 2.6 – 3.39, then 61st percentile rank (504-505) or higher on the MCAT

Washington State tells their interviewees/prospective students that once they hit the minimum MCAT/GPA requirements (set by what they believe is necessary to succeed in medical school), then they fully blind statistics for the rest of the process. It's how they create a truly "holistic" review.
As Washingtonians, we are privileged in that our medical schools (both WSU and UW) have very pretty in state biases to the extent where literally have like a 90%+ in state bias, but it also means we all have the same dedication to our beloved Washington state/serving our families/homes (ie equal playing field in this regard). It then comes down to what we write in our secondaries, who reviews our applications, and how we portray a fit with the general mission fit of rural/underserved medicine (for both WSU and UW this is true).

Also, overall medical schools look for mission fit mostly which is why even though it's a joke of how every school's mission is alike, it's still important to see what the school's mission statement is and what they value. You can be a well-qualified applicant GPA/MCAT/EC wise, but the school might not believe you will fit their school's mission whether it be research, community service, public health, serving rural populations, etc. Schools want to not only know you'll contribute to them, but that you'll gain something from them as well. That's why there's a (largely relevant) distribution on MSAR rather than just literally everyone being in the 515+ range for the 10th percentile and why people above the median range do get rejected.

It's reasonable to be frustrated/upset since you want to know you're good enough for the state school/may love the state school/want to stay in region, but then have to watch yourself get passed by for other people who applied later getting IIs. It could be the admission reader reading your application is slow, maybe the admissions member passed you over because they didn't see a solid fit, or maybe they haven't even reviewed your application yet since let's be real, we have no idea how admission committee members review applications really. But when you do get an interview(hopefully soon if you haven't already), then you'll know the school saw you stood out because of the mission. Good luck 🙂

To all those here who have received IIs from Washington State, congratulations!! Y'all definitely have worked hard and deserve those interviews! Now go slay those interviews (or VITA or whatever WSU is choosing to use?) 🙂

I know it’s super hard waiting for interview invites (I’m in the same boat) but WSU really does continually review applications until the end of the cycle!!

I was waitlisted in the 2018 cycle - submitted my primary in July, completed the secondary less than a week after it was available to me, and was not invited to an interview until early January! And I recognized a few people from
my early January interview cohort in the class photos for the 2019 school year.

Hopefully that eases some people’s nerves a little bit. I know it’s frustrating to see other people get interview invites, especially when they’ve submitted after you, but know that you really are still under review!!

Good luck everyone!!!

But I wanna go here so bad don't they know that? 🤣
