2021-2022 Arkansas College of Osteopathic Medicine (ARCOM)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
does it matter what color the scrubs are? I think i remember a while ago that arcom wanted people to wear surgical green scrubs for anatomy lab. is that still the case nowadays?
nope, they changed it with our class so now we can wear whatever color we want. I'm almost positive it'll be the same with you guys

You are saying only have the class matched or they only provided info regarding half of the class?

Actually I just read an article on talkbusiness.net reporting that ARCOM class of 2022 had a 99.3% match rate.

That info posted above was from the match day video on youtube which only about half the class reported their matches.

Hi everyone, I will be applying here next cycle and don't have a DO letter. I do have an MD one. My understanding is that they allow a waiver. What is the process to get the waiver? Has anyone gotten in with just an MD letter?

quick question, are lectures at ARCOM recorded? If they are, how long afterwards would you see the recording online? Will there be a giant fuss if I choose to watch online rather than go to class?

Yes, almost immediately. If you keep your grade higher than 80% you can skip classes with no issues (outside of labs and TBLs). There won't be a big fuss otherwise, but if you fail a class (and remediation), and they notice you never showed up for anything, it makes it harder to plead your case for a second chance.

Thank you! Also not sure if you would know this but does ARCOM give students access to the prior year's lectures? I heard somewhere that Internet isn't the best sometimes, so in case that day's lecture isn't able to be uploaded, could we possibly use last year's as a supplement?

Might be a silly question but can students who live in The Residents, stay through the summer? It says it is billed per academic year- I’m assuming that is July-May? How does this work? TIA

When I was in year 1 and 2, they did not. I have no idea if they do now. But we rarely (maybe once or twice) had issues with the network or videos posting on time.

Yes, I lived there throughout year 1 and 2. Never had to move, rent was due everything month like a normal apartment (not billed once per academic year). I only moved because I ended up in Little Rock for rotations.

Okay this is great to know. Thank you!

Does anyone know if ARCOM charges their students to go on away rotations? I read that on a different thread but wanted to know from any current students if this is true.

No, ARCOM doesn't charge you lol. They actually encourage you to do aways. But depending on where you go for aways some fees may be associated with some institutions.

Does anyone know how many people are usually on the waitlist & an estimate of how many have been offered a seat from the waitlist each year?

DrStephenStrange Thank you for all of your help. I do have a couple of questions if you don’t mind.

1) Do you NEED a car for pre-clinical years if you live in The Residents or The Village? Are we required to to go to clinics/hospitals in the first two years? How far is the closest grocery store from campus?

2) How is the internet in The Residents?

3) If you move to another city for clinicals, do you need to keep an apartment next to campus to go back and do the OMT practicals?

4) How many hours of OMT class do you have a week?

I would appreciate any insight! Thank you.

Have any accepted students completed the background check yet? It looks like we have to pay for it out of our own pocket?

1) I'd say it depends. If you feel comfortable with riding with a close friend everywhere you want to go, then I think it's doable. You won't have mandatory clinic/hospital days, but sometimes you may need to go volunteering or shadowing and/or participate in various events held by students or the school in different locations, and not having a car may hinder your choices for those since you may not have a ride. Public transportation (even Uber or Lyft) is abysmal as well. Closest grocery store is like 5 minutes away by car.

2) Internet wasn't bad, and it was good enough to do everything related with school.

3) You only have OMT practicals during pre-clinical years, so NO, you don't need to keep an apartment on campus (there's no way you could afford that unless you have a rich family of course lol). In 3rd and 4th years you only worry about clinical rotations.

Though, there is what we call "Day at the Fort" where all 3rd year students come back once a semester to Fort Smith for some clinical skill exercises. On that day, students (those living outside of Fort Smith) either just drive to Fort Smith and return the same day or book a hotel for 1 day. This was meant to prepare us for the COMLEX Level 2 PE which has been temporarily discontinued due to COVID (because there are only 2 test centers for Level 2 PE, one in Philly and the other in Chicago). But this may or may not return for your class. The equivalent test (USMLE Step 2 CS) on the MD side has been completely eliminated after COVID hit, so I don't know what the NBOME plans to do with Level 2 PE yet. For now, you still need to do "Day at the Fort" because the school has to prove to the NBOME that you will be clinically ready for residency by graduation day (while the test is still discontinued).

4) If I remember correctly when I was there. OMT was one day per week 2-3 hours of lecture and 2 hours of lab.

My class created this website, and it's been passed down to other classes. It used to have anki decks that were created by students. I don't know what happened to those because they are no longer there, but I think it's still a good resource.

ARCOM has said the campus is “ family friendly.” Does anyone know of any families that live or have lived on campus yet?

I lived there with my wife. Several of my classmates also lived there with their husbands or wives and kids and pets. It's basically like any other apartment buildings. It's nothing like university/undergrad housing.

During orientation, do we get tb test and drug test onsite and is there health insurance waiver if we have personal coverage?

You will do those test on your own. They'll give you instructions on how to submit them. If you have Health insurance, then it's all that matters; it doesn't matter where.

Do you know if any non-MSB students that have been accepted yet from the waitlist?
ARCOM loves to pull the MSB students off the waitlist so they can advertise that a certain % of MSB class gets into the DO school every year. This encourages more folks to the masters program in hopes of the DO acceptance the following cycle thus generating more $$$ for the institution. It's basically like getting 5 years worth of med school tuition out of one student. If no MSB kids ever got into ARCOM, then nobody would ever fool with doing the masters program. Long story short, it's clearly not impossible, but the MSB students do have a bit of an advantage at this point in the game.

There have been a couple times this semester that we’ve found old lectures to use! I think COVID changed things so now it’s all pretty accessible.

As for the internet, I think I’ve only had an issue once but people I know have complained.

They definitely do have an advantage since they take med school courses. They take anatomy with the med students. The cost of the masters program has been a grand total of 7k including all tuition and fees. It’s definitely not a source of major money for them. If they have someone who completed their masters (especially if they did well) vs someone who didn’t. They’ll take the masters students since they know they can handle it
I agree, but the tuition and fees for the MSB program is a little over $16k a semester according to their website... Definitely not chump change

Here’s to hoping for more waitlist movement this week!!
